Thanks a lot for posting. As someone from the younger generation that has a passion for classics, but did not grow up with the classic tech, what seems simple to my dad is not so simple for me. So I appreciate you going over the "basics" :)

The vans used those 70s truck clusters through 1991. Stinks since tachs weren't available. And actually your truck has a hood release too. The vans were so primitive that they don't have a hood release from inside. It's two catch hood latch is both released from outside. I have an 85 E350 like that. Although my 87 f250's hood release cable is broken so I learned how to release it from outside too. One finger can release it if you know how.

Great video! I'm still having trouble with the blinkers on my 1999 Ford ranger. Loud buzzing from the blinker relay when I turn them on, but only periodically. Replaced the relay and still the periodic buzz. Bulbs are all good, but as I'm at a loss for what's happening I might try replacing them all anyway? Doesn't seem to have rhyme or reason as to why it buzzes (and ceases to blink) sometimes and not others. Guessing either a crossed wire somewhere in the wheel lever or maybe water in the light casing? Any help would be appreciated
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop Год назад
Hi John, Since you have already replaced the turn signal relay, and your bulbs are good, it sounds like the signal control in the column. The signal control is not hard to clean, it does require taking off the steering wheel, but a big undertaking...I would try cleaning it before replacing it, while you have the wheel off, you can then see the type of controller it is...ford has a couple of different ones in these years. Sorry I don't have a lot of other advice on this buzzing issue.
@johnpray866
@johnpray866 Год назад
@@J_R_Shop That was it! I understand now why the 1999 Ford ranger had some electrical problems (amongst others...) The grease the manufacturers put into that signal arm was either misplaced or in the wrong amount, it had melted and spread onto the copper touch plates, shorting them out. With a little bit of help from a can of compressed air and a q-tip dipped in degreaser, it now works perfectly!
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop Год назад
@@johnpray866 awesome, I happy you got it working! 😊 My theory is that as the contacts wear over the years, and the metal from that wear causes the grease to be conductive...so cleaning the contacts, and applying new non-conductive grease will solve some issues, like the relay buzzing.

Thanks for this video J. I have a 77 Cougar wagon, just had the steering column rebuilt and had a new turn signal switch installed about two weeks ago. The turn signals were working well until about two days ago. I checked the fuse, checked the owner's manual to make sure I'm checking the right fuse. Just installed a new fuse today, and installed a new flasher, exactly like the one you show in your video. This did not solve the problem. The emergency flashers work, and the turn signals flash when you pull the flasher switch . I tried applying voltage directly to the turn signal fuse, but no luck. I'm wondering if due to the age of the vehicle, if the fuse connections in the fuse block for the turn signals are deteriorating ? Any suggestions ? Thank you.
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 2 года назад
That's unfortunate, excluding the emergency flashers...what is happening when you use the turn signals?
@tompastian3447
@tompastian3447 2 года назад
@@J_R_Shop Nothing happens. They don't flash. I did note a momentary flash when I had the turn signal switch in the left turn position and pushed on the turn signal fuse, which make me wonder if there is a contact issue there. Using a lighted circuit screwdriver type tester, I do get light on both sides of that fuse. It may be the contact areas behind that fuse are somewhat corroded ? I have not been able to get any more momentary flash from the turn signal in either L or R positions.

@@tompastian3447 what is the state of the turn signal indicator light on the dash when you active the turn signals...does the corresponding light stay on all the time but not flashing, or nothing at all? If the indicator light comes on without flashing, it sounds like a grounding issue. If no indicator light at all, and you said the column has had recent work, which mean it was out of the car, you could have a bad plug connection in the column area.
@tompastian3447
@tompastian3447 2 года назад
@@J_R_Shop Thanks for the reply and believe me I appreciate your help, input etc. I spent 2 hours on this today. For now I have the turn signals working, which may not be for long. The entire fuse block came lose from the under the dash, so I sprayed the back of the block profusely with contact cleaner, then sprayed the front. I'm having trouble keeping that block in place, since there seems to be no snapping tags that I can see to hold the block in place. I tried pushing it and sliding it either left or right, then tried to get it to catch on the top and then push the block in on the bottom. It is barely staying in place and I would bet the fist bump I hit it will detach. I tried to by pass the turn signal fuse and power the signal flasher from another fuse connection. That works, but for some reason in a few seconds the wiring heats up. I tried it a second time and added a 25 amp fuse and the fuse blew. So then I tried plugging the new flasher back in the fuse block and pushing the fuse block in as described above, and the signals work , they flash either L or R using the signal lever. I notice behind the fuse block is a lot of wiring which comes from the rectangular wire blocks on the fire wall. Weird because the fuse block does not plug into these wires. I checked the fuse block for power when it came loose from under the dash, and the fuses have power. Weird that Ford would compact that much wiring right behind the fuse block?

I’m getting a somewhat similar issue to the last part of the video except my right signal turn on solid and won’t flash so I have to use it manually but for some reason that side is a lot dimmer than my left side including my brake light and my regular running light. I’ve replaced the bulb already and it’s still pretty dim, im not really sure what’s going on with that im pretty much a novice at this. It’s a 1973 ford ltd
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 2 года назад
Hi kamisama, it sounds like you have a grounding issue on the circuit with the dim bulb causing high resistance, which causes the flasher to stay active 100% of the time. I suggest that you clean the ground for that socket...also don't over look the condition of the socket it's self, the internal contacts in the socket need to be clean. There are more involved places to check, like the turn signal contacts in the column...but only do one thing at a time, don't jump around, start with the ground and contacts at the sockets, to see if that fixes the issue.
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 2 года назад
Just so know, the ground wire for the turn signal light sockets are black on these cars, and are attached to the chassis near the light socket by a sheet metal screw, you will need to remove the screw and slean the contact area, both on the chassis & wire connector...just in case your not familiar with the setup.

Thank you. I would start with the grounds and bulb contacts, make sure they are all clean and working, after that, pull the steering wheel, and clean the contact's on the turn signal selector inside the column...let's hope no one has monkeys with the wiring, and got things mixed up. Darn wire...most of the time it's just dirty contacts.

When I turn on my 4 way flasher, the left front light comes on but doesn't flash. I check the bulb and both of the filaments are intact no short. The turn signal indicator on the instrument panel blinks as it should. I just don't get it, any ideas?

Hi Gary, I would find the last place where the left circuit has 12 volts of power. I would start at the socket and work my way in toward the turn signal switch on the column. I don't have a wire diagram for your truck...so I can tell you the wire colors for the left side. Once you find the point of power, you will at least have isolated the issue, then you only have to deal with that portion of the circuit.

Having an issue with a 68 impala. When I replace the flasher relay the blinkers work for a little while and then stop blinking. After a few minutes the light will stay solid and not blink anymore. I’ve replaced multiple relays. Do I need a electro magnetic flasher? You stated that their may be a burnt bulb.. I’m having the issue on both left and right. Just stays solid. Lights are blinking when a new relay is used for about 5 minutes. I’ve been using the Novita ll550 due to the cheapness. Would an electro magnetic relay fix the issue or is it the bulbs?

Just looking at the specs for the ll550, and it's not heavy enough to run the turn signals in your car. At minimum the ll552 will work, and better yet go with the EL12. Also make sure your grounds at the sockets are good, bad grounds can cause resistance, that overload the flasher.

Sorry Ryan...I saw your comment, but was on the road and forgot to get back to you. Does it look like someone had been playing with the wiring...it sounds like someone has the wiring mixed up, one way to check the brake light issue is to unplug the brake switch on the brake pedal, and see if the brake lights go out...if they are still on, then likely the wiring has been played with.

what if the relay wont turn off, just keeps flashing like i have hazard lights but i don't at least i think they dont 1965 impala SS
@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 3 года назад
The relay behavior is based on load resistance, if the relay is switching fast, the load for the relay is most likely too high, possible poor conductivity in one or more light sockets, or poor ground, causing higher load (resistance), when a bulb burns out it would cause the relay to switch slower, or not at all on the circuit, causing the turn signal light on the dash not to flash. If this just started and nothing was changed on the car...then start be checking the condition of the bulb to socket connections, and also clean the ground contact point. Also these flashers do fail, and maybe needs to be replaced, however cleaning the connections is a good place to start, if you don't want to spend the money on a new flasher. I hope this helps...thanks for the question! All most forgot the turn signal switch on the column, in some vehicles the can be problematic, like the my F100, these truck have had issues at the turn signal selector switch...but start with the bulbs and grounds...one thing at a time.

Since your hazard light circuit is working, that tells me your grounds, and as you said, bulbs are good, I would look at the turn signal switch in the column. In case you didn't know, the Harvard and turn signal circuits are separate, with their own "Flasher" switches, but the hazards make it good for testing the sockets, bulbs, and grounds, and it appears yours are good. So that leaves the column turn signal switch (keep in mind I don't have a wire diagram for an 87 E150), and the turn signal circuits go through that switch, both front and back...the front circuit has the dash indicator bulbs on it, the rear circuit has the brake light, but only after the switch. You may only have to clean the old switch, often that is the case...they get all gummed up with dirt because of the grease used, and you will want to give it a light coat of dielectric grease after cleaning. Just a helpful tip, get a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel, it saves all that unnecessary pounding with a hammer, which could damage the column, also mark the wheel position against the shaft for accurate reinstall.

@J_R_Shop
@J_R_Shop 11 месяцев назад
@@pvb9964 my fault, I assumed you knew that there are two flashers, one for the 4 ways, and one for the turns...they are different load resistance, you will need the correct one for your turns. On my truck, the turns flasher has an orange/yellow wire, and a blue wire going to it, the 4 way flasher has a white/red, and a red wire. The turns flasher is larger in size than the hazards flasher, and hangs from the harness just above the park brake...the plug is made of light blue plastic. The hazards flasher hangs higher up, but in the same area, it has a black plastic plug.
