I turned three separate couch cushions into one long bench cushion on my FB marketplace vintage sofa. I keep seeing retailers selling sofas with one long bench cushion so I decided to change this sofa to a bench cushion to update the look. A single bench cushion is so much more comfy to lay on, plus no-one has to sit in a crack. Slipcover video to follow...

Sewing was taught in high school in the ‘70’s. Fortunately, I learned how to see and once you learn the basics, you can sew anything. I have sew curtains, bedspreads, Roman shades, pants, blouses, aprons, etc. Learning how to sew was one of THE MOST USEFUL classes for me. When you can’t find something you like, you can choose a fabric you love and make it yourself. Mimzy is a great teacher!

I have a small sofa that needs updating but have put it off because of foam prices. So happy to have found this tutorial. Now I am confident to use my existing foam by gluing them together. I use an electric kitchen knife for cutting foam. I use a straight edge and run the knife along the edge to keep the cuts straight.

An electric kitchen carving knife does a terrific job at cutting foam cushions. To get a smooth cut, resist the urge to apply pressure, let the blades do the work at their own pace. If you apply much pressure to the knife, you'll compress the foam which results in a jagged cut.

I used Revolution performance fabric. It’s called sugar shack , colorway glacier. I love it for this style sofa because the fabric is fairly stiff, no drape, so it looks good on a very straight and square sofa.

Thank you! I have a two seat sofa that I cover with memory foam because I hate sinking into the seam, but I think I will finally attempt to merge them into one and make a new slip cover for it!

yes! You'll be so happy you did...it makes the whole sofa more usable. rather than sitting on one side or the other.

Yes, I love love my cutting table ! I only recently inherited from upholstery mentor. He brought it from his first shop in New Jersey…so I guess It could have originally come from garment district. That would be really cool. Thank you Polly!

Hello! I love your videos. I have a couch that is just like that one but it is feathers rather than foam. Will one long cushion work? Should I get one long foam to place in the center and have the feathers fill in all around? How would you do this? Thanks!

i would do foam wrapped in feathers. It's called a feather envelope. You have a foam cushion and the feathers go on top and bottom of the foam in a big pillow. So it's like you make a feather pillow that sits on top of the foam. I'll see if I can find a vid of what i mean.

Yes, you can absolutely use the cushions that came with the couch. That's what i did with the second couch. I would've preferred a thicker 5" cushion but I used what i had. Foam is really expensive.

Beautiful job. Did you pre-wash your fabric? I’m wondering if I should since I have cats and I would like to be able to launder my slip covers at home. My fabric is 100% linen.

I didn't prewash this because it's a performance fabric by revolution. But it's very unusual that i didn't prewash. I almost always recommend prewashing...if you're using linen definitely prewash because it will shrink significantly.

@@saranaghavi usually after the dacron, but sometimes my mom used to sew a layer of dacron to the wrong side of a cushion or pillow if the the feathers looked lumpy to smooth and plump.

Fab tutorial - thank you so much for the benefit of your experience, Mimzy. Not absolving my responsibility, but just asking if you have experience of re-upholstery & any fire retardance regulations in your country? Is this something I could bear in mind when re-fashioning & re-covering domestic furniture to follow regs in UK? I don't expect anyone to give advice on regs, just wondering if you have worked with fire-retardant upholstery products.

I only have experience with fire retardant fabric for drapery's I've made for restaurants. I bought the fabric from a company that treats the fabric for commercial use. I'm sure the same company does upholstery fabric as well. However, I cant remember the name of the company right now. It's been years. I do some upholstery, I worked in an upholstery shop for a while. but mostly as the tear-off girl. I'm about to do an uphosltery video though...stay tuned.

Yes it does! I have bought them at thrift stores for that very purpose. They wear out quickly. One day I may break down snd get a legit foam saw.

I have often cut them off and make them into loose boxed cushions. Usually there's fabric behind the attached cushions, but sometimes not. If theres no fabric then i staple on fabric to have support.

An electric knife is great for cutting the foam, and thank you for reusing your foam, it’s terrible for the environment and I love seeing people reuse it. :)

Yes, you're right about the electric knife...I wore mine out. AND you're right about the foam...not only is it terrible for the environment if thrown away but new foam off-gassing is terrible for our home environment as well. I like to reuse as much as possible. Thank you for the comment!
