Turned away and disappointed | Failed trip to Havasupai

First and foremost, we express our utmost gratitude towards the Supai tribe for graciously accommodating us in their village and assisting us in navigating through the confusion and disappointment.
We wanted to share our experience of a failed trip to Havasu Falls.
The day started out promising. Around 9am and 6 miles in we made it to the bridge where water was rising quickly.
We were met with a ranger who would not allow anyone to cross the creek as the water was high and expected to rise significantly. This was due to recent rain and a dam releasing water. So we made some lunch and watched as the water rose higher and the dogs and mules made their way back and forth across the creek.
The hours passed and as more hikers were met with disappointment, we were told to set up camp with the hope that the water levels would go down by the next day.
Some people didn’t have their bags as the mules had taken everything to the campground so they had to bring the mules back with peoples belongings along with food and even a heli drop with more backpacks and water.
Everyone was set up alongside the river until we were told at 5pm that we needed to hike to higher ground. We dismantled quickly and set up a mile away only to be told an hour later that there was a back trail we could hike to avoid water crossings and that we were welcome to sleep in the Supai village.
Again, we broke down camp and hiked a back trail to the village where hundreds of us set up in the helicopter field & a basketball court. We were welcomed but at the same time felt unwelcome. As the daylight started to fade away, all of us settled in together, not sure what was going to happen next.
The next day most people lined up to take a helicopter ride out while a handful of us decided to just backpack out as they had not made an official decision of whether or not the campground would open. On top of that, the water would be a muddy brown color for at least a couple more days. We decided to hike out and try our luck some other time.

So, sorry. I did this trip 20-25 years ago. Don't give up, it's definitely worth it. We stayed at would now be the lodge. We walked in and out as well. Try again if you can. Sorry, you got flooded out.

My family and I had a similar experience back in 2010. They were just re-opening from the devastating flash flood a few years earlier that required the entire village to be evac'd by choppers, not just the backpackers. I could be wrong on it having been 2010, but I think that's when they re-opened. We actually made it into the camp ground, which was still mostly destroyed from the previous flood, even after 2 years. We got set up, and by evening we were told to move to higher ground, because bad weather was happing out on the plateau (between the Kingman area, Peach Springs, and Seligman. This is the same type of event that wiped them out 2yrs earlier. We moved, and woke up to rain, and the tiny stream that ran through the campground was becoming large. We were advised to get water from the potable source asap, and "they" were still uncertain if the area would flood. We hiked down to Mooney Falls, through what was becoming thigh and crotch deep muddy water. Climbed down and saw the falls, and then headed out and back to camp. The water was rising on the way back. We packed up, and with fully loaded packs, because we hadn't eaten hardly any of the food we'd brought, we were walking fast, the couple of miles back to the village. As we left the village, about where that orange bridge is in your video, a village member on horseback stopped us and warned that the flash flood was coming, they didn't know which of the canyons in that immediate area that it was going to drop down into, and if we got caught in the 4mi long box of the exit canyon, we'd be killed. So there we were, my wife, myself, and our daughter, age 10 I think. We "jogged" and hiked fast, up and out of that canyon section, and got back out to the gravel riverbed section, kept on trucking for the parking lot up top. It was a brutal 2 days, and the speed hike out, with the threat of death, was not great. To those looking to go, the trash that John was picking up, is not from backpackers. Also, the village smells like a garbage dump, because the residents have no way to get rid of their trash. So the trash is piled up outside their homes, and everywhere else, while they wait for the government to send in choppers with a clean up crew in hazmat suits, to haul it all away every few months. If you're planning to pay to have your gear taken down by their horses (they aren't walking mule teams like you see at the Grand Canyon Nat'l Park, they are literally "running" horses, like you see in the video. Your gear may not make it down, if you know what I mean. As you walk through the outskirts of the village, coming into the main town area, you will see all the gear and ice chests/coolers stacked behind the homes of the residents. After we returned home, our legs broke out in something like hives, from our butts to our feet, due to us walking in that muddy water, which I'm guessing, contained sewage from the village.

Sounds like you had an even more exciting time than we did. Hopefully it wasn’t 300 dollars per person when you went in 2010. I think the most frustrating part was they didn’t tell people that there was another bridge out of the village that we ended up hiking out, so most people “stranded” paid the 100 dollars for the helicopter ride.

@@chasethealberts It was extremely expensive then. I found the entire thing to be nothing more than a cash grab.

Glad the dog made it! That little clip at the beginning had me having flashbacks to when my partner and friends (and friends' dogs) and I were dropped off on a sandbar in the middle of a rising tidal river in Alaska after camping on an island. We all came very close to not making it and watching the dogs getting swept away was the worst (but they made it!) Our other friend was like Jesus waiting for us on the shore. Apparently the guys who dropped us off who said it was an easy walk to the shore from the sandbar were high on acid, which led to their miscalculation as the water was chest deep and we had on big ol' xtra tuffs and overnight packs that I don't know how they didn't get bogged down with water to drown us. We weren't as familiar with the area as they were--nor did we know they were high at the time--so we trusted them. The lesson for anyone reading this far is always insist on being dropped off at the actual shore (and make sure the operators of your boat are sober!)

Wow, what a story! Actually gave me some flashbacks of when we were staying on the Amazon river in Peru, our guides had a little too much to drink on a boat trip and I thought for sure they weren’t going to be able lead us back to our lodging while driving the boat after the sun went down. Fortunately, we made it back!
