Turner Watercolors is probably the most underrated and least known watercolors. There's only 4 or 5 reviews in total on RU-vid. Personally I love these paints as they're transparent and bright and quite highly pigmented and I prefer them over Holbein. Got more than 40 of the 15ml tubes of Turner in my collection. They actually deserve a lot more credit and attention than they're getting... Add a drop of honey and three or so drops, of glycerin and your paint won't crack in your palette when dry... Nice review 👍

These are indeed VERY good for glazing I was really impressed by them. I think if I lived in japan where they are cheaper I would have a lot more colors. I’m def digging the effects the Maya colors create. You are right they aren’t many reviews of these up so I wanted to do them ASAP. I think it’s because here in America it’s harder to get them open stock and they are more expensive than they need to be. But if I had over to Japan again I’m def picking up a whole bunch! Thank you so much. You are right though I probably should have given them more credit for how transparent they are and how well they layer. Really the yellow ocher was the only one that was mildly opaque and that’s by far the most transparent PBr7 burnt sienna I have. Thanks again!

Jackson's Art sell them on average for less than $5 per 15ml tube with only the cadmium's around $7 and cobalt's around $6, making them affordable to most water-colorists... thats less than half the price of any artist grade paint in the USA. I like the Transparent Yellow Oxide and Transparent Red Oxide.

Alison - yes I was really surprised by how much I liked them and how versatile they are.

ColoringKaria Jackson's Art where you shop sell them from around $4.50-7.62 which make them available to you at really great prices... 😁

That’s a great suggestion. I just didn’t check Jackson’s because it’s weird I think about Jackson’s as a place to get large items or items I can’t get here. I have to be more mindful to checking them for some smaller and inexpensive items. I paid $30 for the white knights set of 12 but Jackson’s had the same set for $13!

I think this is the best multi-brand watercolor review that I've seen. Thanks. You really helped me sort out the rejects from my monster bag of different brand tubes. Naturally, I made my own swatches to compare but your comments on what to look for and what to reject are stellar.

I want to add my two cents. I am just getting used to the quality of the paints I purchased. Of course I wanted the Turners Yellow. It is delicious and bright. I got my own few colors. Alizarin Crimson, yellow green and red oxide. They are all transparent. This is awesome. the way they mix and are amazing for glazing. I will try some more colors to play with,

I've been using some Turner paints for several months. I also have some M. Graham and Lukas. I have not had any issues with them other than on some of the transparent oxide colors, I have to add a bit more water as they seem very concentrated. There are some colors that I just can't do without like the Green Gold and the Trans Yellow Oxide. For the price, I can justify the cons. I do prefer them over cotman colors.

Right now I own Sennelier and Daniel Smith watercolor sets. If I break down and get a third set, it will most likely be m. graham. As for the cats, well, they want attention when they you are giving it to someone else. They are what they are. :) Thanks for sharing.

Very true! Those are my fave brands as well. Though I’m wishing really that m Graham sold paints in smaller tubes. They have no dot cards or half pans so it’s always getting larger tubes with them. We both have the full sets of sennelier so I’m loving that but I did break down and buy caput mortuum and emerald green from sennelier in the half pan. I do love the colors but they are such a pain to pour I totally can’t travel with them because they are sooo wet. But the half pans are really nice for those colors. Daniel Smith, I keep telling myself I don’t need new colors and yet they have so many awesome colors! Oh yeah! I don’t even know why I bother w the cats! After I pushed Bella off the shawl, I left the room and found Stewie in the same spot except he was cleaning his man sack!!! 🤦🏾‍♀️🤣

I have bought and tested about every western paint. only holbein and mission gold from the east. I dislike this paint. Maybe brighter than cotman but my cotman all went bye,bye( bought them for the really nice travel palettes. These ARE going to my great granddaughter. I feel after testing these on at least 10 papers that control is a major issue. Of all of the artist named paints I will stick with da vinci. Goes to prove that you get what you pay for...of the cheaper paints I will keep my white nights.

Hi What type of paper did you use for this review? Thanks
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 5 лет назад
I always use 140 pound, 100% cotton cold press paper from strathmore (mixing charts), bee (small mixing and comparison charts) and or arches sketches etc. :) I hope that helps.

Based on your review I don't think Turner Watercolor is for me. If I judge your charts right I think I might like Holbein more. I have a box of 24 tubes waiting to be tested. :) The comparison charts are again really helpful.

Mr. Mauve personally I don't like Holbein.. They're very chalky... And they use strange pigments and color mixes and they got lots of colors that's very alike... Even Mission Gold is much better than Holbein... Turner is great paints although like with every brand there's some that's weaker. Although I got several sets I prefer to build my own palette and I currently use Windsor and Newton, White Nights, Sennelier, Shinhan, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Mission Gold and some Art Spectrum from Australia...
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 6 лет назад
Michael makes a lot of good points. I like the turners and Holbein almost the same with the Holbein getting a slight edge. But Michael is right you have to make a mixing chart with your Holbein colors because things don’t mix the way they normally would and just like mission gold they have a lot strange mixes. I wasn’t sure what to do next but maybe I’ll do the Holbein while the turners are refresh in mind. I would say if you know someone who has some or if see them on sale try the turner’s because they are really good. But if you already have a lot Daniel Smith, M Graham, Qor they might not offer as much as if you are coming from say Cotman.

Mission Gold can sometimes be a little difficult to mix, I've noticed. Particularly the multi-pigment colors. If Holbein has similar problems, that might be something that annoys me. I paint with several brands, but am always curious about what other people are using. My main palettes consist of either Winsor & Newton PWC, Daniel Smith or local brand Schmincke Horadam. I haven't really mixed brands in a single palette yet. I suppose that makes sense. Each paint manufacturer has really good versions of a particular color. Something to try.
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 6 лет назад
Yes this is all true! I really really love layering and glazing do my top choice is sennelier but my “main mixed” palette has sennelier, Mgraham and Daniel Smith. All three of those brands are relatively affordable here. (Shminkce costs an arm and a leg here). I have the full set of sennelier so that’s what I mainly use!
