Thanks for a thorough guide Sergio. Like you said, many ways to get to the same result. I agree with the chunkiness of handling pins and springs. Your method is less prone the the effects of gravity - dropping the critical piece and then unable to find it. Your tip on using hot melt glue to prevent the gimbal wire contact was simple and effective. I took your path, but a different fork. Rather than cut and solder to lengthen the wire, I desoldered the wire connectors from the Y-axis potentiometer board, switched gimbal sides with the wires, reversed the connection into the potentiometer board,and re-soldered the connections. The other axis was a matter of using a small tweezer end to pull back the plastic lock, remove the outer pins from the connectors, swap and insert them in the X-axis connectors.
