Yea but these days most companies know how to liquidate without a price drop. Say like Nvidia and their in-genius way to sell old hardware last year. From 1998-2006, I'd literally sell my rig right before new product launch to retain value. Then just build a new one and just wait 2-months for launch. I haven't been able to that in a decade+.

Still people in Perth asking 250 for a 4790k or 150+ for 4770, its almost cheaper to build a R5 3600 PC than a 4th gen Intel atm.

HP ProDesk, nice! That is my daily driver, with an i7-4770, 16GB RAM and upgraded to a SSD. Great top with cutting up the cooler backplate to secure the HP heatsink. On my machine ESC accesses a general menu from which you can then select boot menu, BIOS and other options.

Get x5675 Xeon on Ebay for $25 and overclock to 4.5-4.7 ghz, and it will smoke i7 920, and will be close to i7 4790k at 4.5 ghz. Plus you will get 6 cores instead of 4. Prior, update bios on motherboard. If you brick your cpu overclocking, you got another $25 bucks to spend

I always love the OEM hustle videos. You get the rigs for a great price, make a few bucks, save a pc from the landfill, and clue us into what systems work best for gaming. For instance I had no idea that Sandy Bridge era HP rigs had trouble with newer graphics cards.

how new of cards and what rigs? i have an HP 8300 board with a 2550K and RX480 8GB. technically its an Ivy Bridge mobo (q77) so maybe thats the difference? i can play new games like Warzone and The Outer Worlds that are reasonably demanding on 1080 max and stay at 60 locked. RX480 is overclocked to just under 1400.

11:47 That has to be a problem on the power meter's side. It's electrically impossible for the PSU to effect a (wall socket side) power meter in such a way and still work normally. From the PSU's perspective, the power meter doesn't exist
@nahventure3873
@nahventure3873 4 года назад
Might be using ground as a neutral and/or has the HOT and NEUTRAL inverted. Therefore bypassing entirely the power meters method. With no ground, it shouldn't work at all or it should actually measure the usage. more than likely the hot is inverted though.

yes thats what i used. well, mine was for an 8300 but basically the same thing. i later realized that all it does thats special is up the 5V standby ATX uses to HP 12V standby. so you could just wire it up yourself from the old plugs and a tiny board with a stepper if you know basic electronics and soldering. and this applies to any proprietary psu. most all have the needed 12v, neg12v, 5v, and 3.3v. some are multirail so in that case you want to make sure your cpu and gpu are on different rails.

That's cool. I'd probably 3d print an extension cover for that PSU which has that bit gap in the back. I think 3D printing offers a lot to the PC community, especially the used parts community that might be pairing gear from different machines and generations. Considering the low cost of 3D printers and the relative ease of designing functional parts, I'm surprised it isn't used more frequently.

Bryan, you can find a proprietary PSU cable adapter on eBay and that way use any PSU on an OEM HP system, try searching for (24pin to 6pin hp OEM) should come up, I've used it before and it does the job, though it looks sketchy and I would not recommend going over 500W with that adapter cable.

I actually have the adapter with my elitedesk 800 g2 mini system as i move all the parts to a new case and bought a new psu and a rx580. If u are interested in it u could just google and find the pinouts online.
@mashedpotatoes5323
@mashedpotatoes5323 2 года назад
Wouldn't recommend going over 500 watts....? The adapter doesn't really care how big your power supply is or what GPU is connected. With the OEM dell optiplex computers they need a adapter similar to this and all it does is converts the 5volts standby power to 12volts.

I just finished with a build close to this. I was on the fence about buying another XBox/Playstation anything. I started out with an HP Desk Pro 600 G1 SFF that I had for a couple years and it worked well as a surfer/streamer and a crummy Music Work Station. The first thing I did was swap the HD for a Samsung 850 Evo SSD at $90, a whole world of difference. I swapped out mem and replaced with 32 gigs of crucial 1600mhz DDR3 that I got for $75 on Ebay and put a GTX1060 in it I also found on EBay for $150. I couldn't close the case after that and I had to get a second PSU, jump the power to ground on the ATX connector to provide power for the GPU because there was no 6pin PCI power on the HP and at 260 watts I doubted it's ability to power the GPU. I also got a Sound Blaster XAE5 cause I make music on this thing too. World of Warcrafts played great at all resolutions, and then I started looking into other games. I noticed that CPU and GPU were maxed out while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 3. And then the 1060 died at the same time the cheap PSU I bought for $30 fried, probably related, sad. So I got a Corsair 850Watt PSU NEW realizing what I would have to do in the future. I replaced the GPU with a GTX 1660 TI new from Micro Center $300. GPU utilization dropped but CPU was still maxed. I replaced the I5 4560 with an I7 4790K also from Ebay for $250 from China but had to turn turbo off in bios due to over heating and current throttling (always make sure you are running the latest BIOS version). At that point I realized that the motherboard was the bottleneck and simply not sophisticated enough to provide stable power and thermal management for the new CPU. So I bought an MSI Gaming 5 on Ebay for $150, it took almost a month to arrive from China but worth the wait. I then purchased a Corsair Chrystal 460 case cause NEW I was tired of the Pi look. A Corsair H100i $130 and a Corsair Commander Pro for $70 at Micro Center cause I like my lights to sync. And a Crucial 1TB NVME M.2 I think it was around $100. I de-lided the 4790k and Conductonaut under the IHS and Kryonaut on top. And another 32 Gigs of mem only Hyper X Fury at 1860mhz ebay, about $200. Now everything runs great! CPU overclocked to 4.6Ghz and stable with temps never above 62c. I tried some overclocking on the 1660 TI and saw some really outstanding benchmarks but found things ran a great deal smoother without overclocking when actually playing games. (I wanna' get a 2080 super maybe). I also de-lidded/Condutonauted the 4560, put it back in the HP, left the Crucial mem in and the 850 Evo put the lid back on the case and gave it to my wife who works from home and had another HP but older with an Athalon (YUCK!!!). so in short, this can work but you will find that the MB and PSU of the original HP will be sorely lacking in performance, management and features. It's kind of like putting a super charger on a Ford Pinto. And don't be afraid to buy cheap stuff from China, it's worked out great for me. Oh and one more thing, those USB 3.0s on the HP you know the blue ones, aren't. They are "USB 3.0 Supported" in HPs world that's the same, it's not. They will recognize USB 3.0 devices but will only 'speak' in legacy USB. So NO VR support with the HP board. It was the purchase of an Oculus Rift S that made me buy the MSI motherboard. I did this over the span of about 9 months so the cost was very stretched out and manageable.

How do you get the standard front panel headers to connect to a dell oem motherboard if they are different?
@Scitch87
@Scitch87 5 лет назад
Magic.
@lollb454
@lollb454 5 лет назад
Well if the front panel headers are all separated it should be really easy, just hook up each connector to the right 2 pins. However if you have one large front panel connector you should cut it off and add your own separate headers
@SaintInix
@SaintInix 5 лет назад
Lookup an XPS 700 series LED re-wire thread. There are a couple out there, I've done multiples and hardwired all the multicolor LEDs to single colors. Including all the front panel and fan connectors/headers. It's just current and wires, check my channel for my Dell AIO power supply hack. Put a 300w regular power supply into a Dell all in one after the compact power supply burned out.
@Brandon-uy1uv
@Brandon-uy1uv 5 лет назад
You probably have to solder them in following a pin diagram from the internet
@SaintInix
@SaintInix 5 лет назад
@@Brandon-uy1uv Nah, you can just repin the connector using a needle to push in the tabs on each pin and reseat them into the connector. Or you just cut the end off and wire in new standard front panel ends to the old wires. In a lot of cases, you don't even need to change anything because most is still the same. An Acer I just reused the case on, the front panel is one connector, but it lines up perfectly and i didn't have to rewire anything, just plugged the whole cable in and everything was fine. Less chance with Dell, but they usually have pinout listed somewhere, or some dude like me figures it out and posts it on a forum.

Well done for getting that all to work..... I've done this a couple of times with old HP office PC's.... they were 4th and 6th gen respectively but I used a couple of cheap mining boards to swap all the good bits over and then I could still use a standard ATX type PSU and no problems with different power button connectors - think I've still got the old HP 4th gen and 6th gen motherboards lying around somewhere gathering dust.

Cool to see that you made that HP work in a regular case! Nonetheless I do still prefer the Dell Optiplexes over the HP ones, as even as you pointed out that both the front panel and power switch headers are proprietary on them the pinout diagrams are already available on the LTT forums. Also I'm not a fan of only using nuts to secure a CPU heatsink as it's pretty easy to apply uneven pressure on the motherboard and that can cause flexing and trace ruptures over time. Finally I've been using both RX 470s and RX 560s on both 2nd and 3rd gen Optiplexes without issues using the pre-Spectre and Meltdown BIOSes available for them. Best regards!

There are wiring harnesses that you can buy on Amazon for relatively cheap that will allow you to use a non proprietary power supply with an HP motherboard. I'm in the process of building a NAS for my ESXi cluster using an old HP ProDesk 800. The 320w power supply isn't enough to run 16 drives, a RAID card and RAID expander card.

The board should flash and the scroll lock light should be flashing. This allows the Strafe to communicate with the older BIOS properly. Let me know if this was helpful!
