Turning A High School Into One of the Largest Frag Swaps in America 

I teach 7th, 8th, and HS Biology down in Stamford CT. Each of my students has a stony coral fragment that they monitor throughout the year. The 7th graders and the HS biology students do a presentation on coral reef ecology at the end of the year. The 8th graders do a presentation on calcification and the carbonic acid, bicarbonate, carbonate equilibrium in sea water. Giving each of them a coral frag gives them some "skin in the game". They care about their fragments and that makes the learning that much more interesting. Having an Apex in the classroom also allows me to show them the impact of their own carbon dioxide on the pH of the aquarium. Cheers, Chris

That's absolutely wonderful that you got saltwater aquariums for the high school. I don't wanna be that guy. But make sure those kids wear full PPE and there's proper ventilation when fraging. Teach safety protocols as we are just on the verge of learning what these compounds are coming out of coral. For instance, When I frag simple Xenia with one bare hand thinking i was fine. My hand goes numb, then leads to my whole half of my body, including my face. We all have heard of the stories, from heart problems to mysterious deaths. This is all based of scientific knowledge so let's not be blinded by the beauty in nature and keep an open mind. And a frag swap! Totally awesome

#WhatsInYourWater Sure why not, Inductive plasma is super informative and I've yet to do one on my new system. At the very least, ICP would be great to establish a baseline. And then have data to compare it against, should I have a problem down the road. Now on topic, this gentleman's program is simply excellent. This was a wonderful conversation, and my hat's off to Mr. Swanson and his tremendous efforts. As well as Mr. Sandler for providing funding for marine education is schools. 45:10 this argument is everything. This is the reality our hobby and industry will face in the coming decades. Our ability as both hobbiest's and the marine industry to operate independent of the natural reef, is the only thing with will convince legislators to allow aquaculture to continue after wild reefs degrade past where collection is possible. As of right now, if a coral is listed as endangered, it doesn't matter if it's captive grown, legislation does not typically make that distinction. Yet, we have to opportunity to convince policy writers and legislators that our community can care for and foster marine corals and fish even if their wild populations decline. But we only have the opportunity, if we collectively choose to act and move in such a direction. instead, if reefing continues to rely on wild collection, there is little reason for future legislation to separate the wild caught from aquaculture or tank raised. And under that line of thought, when a coral or fish becomes protected... That's it. It will no longer be in the hobby.
