In this video I transform an ice fishing tent into a hot winter tent. Then I take it out on one of the coldest nights of the winter and sleep overnight. It wasn't without its challenges but you'll have to take a peek to see how things turned out!!!

Do you lose heat not having a bottom, I realize a tarp could go on the bottom but it's not the same because I'm thinking of living outside this winter in Canadian weather my health is not good, I don't cold to a certain degree, another question can you get your tent at least 18 degrees because that would be a great temperature for me
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 4 года назад
You do not lose heat around the bottom. Not if you shovel the snow around the exterior (perimeter) flaps. It is quite easy to get it to 18 degrees. Actually, it’s hard to keep it under 18, unless of course the fire goes out. Hope this helps!

@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 4 года назад
I used propane in this tent for many years but found it produced extreme amounts of condensation, plus the CO levels were high enough it would make me somewhat nauseous and light headed. Your stove pipe is still too close to the screen and tent material. The stove-jack allows you to cut out a larger section of the tent so that only the fireproof material is close to the stovepipe... not the tent or the mesh. Be careful.

It's called a "taut-line" knot (or hitch). Very easy to remember as it's just 'two on the inside and one on the outside', referring to the loops inside and outside of where the main line meets back with itself once around the tree in this case. I use it a lot.

@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 5 лет назад
I absolutely would consider a spark arrester if it were summer/fall. However, in the winter you wouldn't catch the surrounding trees on if you tried your hardest...it's just too cold, etc. As for sparks damaging the tent, my experience is even the length and angle I had the pipe was fine not to do any damage. Thanks so much for watching and the comment!

It is extremely rare that I subscribe. I have just subscribed to you. I am looking at buying an ice fishing tent that looks identical to yours. And I want to do pretty much exactly what you have done. I live in an earthquake zone. Assuming I survive the quake, I want to have a nice warm spot to sleep and wait out the recovery. I will not go to a public "shelter". Could you tell us where you bought the tent? Also, could you provide some details on the stove jack. That is probably the simplest one I have ever seen. Does it have a brand name? Available on ebay? Any complaints about the quality of your tent in general? Thanks.

The tent was bought at Canadian Tire, but can be bought online through a number of outlets (just google Eskimo Ice Fishing Tents). With a tent with no floor wouldn't the snow melt and the ground get muddy?
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 5 лет назад
It may if we had warmer temps I’m assuming. We’d also need much less snow. There about 3-4 feet beneath me here. But, since the tent isn’t insulated, the heat basically rises and dissipates through the walls/roof of the tent instantly. It doesn’t have time to “rest” on the floor in our case. Finally, a test for you to try....next time you have a wood stove going at your cabin....place your hand beneath the stove on the floor.....it may be warm but not hot....even though it’s incredibly hot on all sides and top....same in the tent, some snow melts but not enough to really cause any significant melt. Thanks for the question 👍

Not sure if you figured this out or not, but that style of tent will fold in onto itself after a snow fall, so I suggest threading a rope through to top centre ring on the outside and then tie each end to a tree to keep that from happening. Looks like an awesome couple days spent with your dog. I better go find something to do outside now.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 4 года назад
I cut a tree the same height of the tent and stick it up inside center if it’s snowing. Cuz you’re right, I have had it collapse. Thanks for mentioning it👍

Only thing I see to watch out for, if you expect it to snow, bring a pole to prop up the center of the roof. It's not very fun when the damn thing collapses on you.

Hey thanks for the video! I really enjoyed it and it made me remember fondly when I used to winter camp in the Black Hills of South Dakota 45 years ago. I had very little money so I would ski in somewhere with everything I needed in my backpack. I had a nylon two-man backpacking tent that really only had enough room for me and my gear. I had a cheapo sleeping bag (not down filled) and a blanket and for heat I had a tiny Primus backpacking stove which ran on white gas (Coleman fuel). There is zero room for error when you have fire in a tiny nylon tent (and I was crazy to do it), so I just kind of sat hunched over the stove and moving VERY carefully. Cooking was an exercise in caution but I managed to have some delicious meals. I had to turn off the stove when I slept, so it got chilly when the temp was around zero f. It was a lot of fun, but I admit I would have loved to have a setup like yours, and a good dog like Willow!
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 5 лет назад
Yes i've done a similar thing while tenting in the summer time during extreme rain (one burner stove trying to cook). Not recommended of course but sometimes you have to do what you have to do! Thanks for the comment. Love to hear these recollections!

I luv your Sweet Darling pup, she's a beauty. It's amazing how she jumps up on that sled mobile with you. She must get a bit chilly with the Wind on it though you think ? Draping a blanket over her on it could probably be a bit dangerous if it fell off whilst in motion, getting tangled etc.. anyway I just subbed. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and plan on binge watching for a couple hours on this Rainy Sunday afternoon lol. REALLY Love Willow so much, Gorgeous pup. Oh and the tent too btw lol..

Great video - nothing beats good old wood heat when it gets really cold. Here is a little tip for you: when you assemble your stove pipes, turn them around so that the crimped "male end" is on the bottom. That way the creosote will run down the inside of the pipe and not leak out the edge of the pipes onto your tent.

I will preface this by saying that I HATE WINTER...but do enjoy watching videos of how folks keep warm and sustain themselves in the frigid elements...nice video friend, and what a sweetheart of a dog you have there...one question: why bring a big cooler for your food when Mother Nature has the freezer turned way down?
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors 5 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. 👍. I typically store my food and other cooking gear in the same cooler and use that cooler(s) year round, so I know when I get to wherever I’m going I’ll have the things I need (utensils etc). Also, if you carry food like bread, cookies, etc, it keeps them from getting squished from the surrounding gear.
@paulb6934
@paulb6934 5 лет назад
Agreed....the cooler protects the food and can keep if from freezing solid in those temps.

We don’t have pine here but I do use spruce twigs which serve a similar purpose. To answer your first question, it’s prohibited to carry a pistol in Canada. I could own one bit would only be permitted to transport it shortest distance from my house to a registered gun range and back.
