Thank you Jim. You've got me well and truly hooked on your amazing work. I also pleased that you've got two of the biggest names in wood turning, namely Carl and Mike, recommending you. I'm an obsessive wood turner and I too try not to take a piece off the chuck until the very last moment. Best wishes, Alan.

Just a quick tip . When rolling Milliput, it wont stick to the roller if you keep the roller wet. You can also add a few drops of water on the Milliput. Just like rolling pastry dough and adding flour. Great videos.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 8 лет назад
I use water when working with Milliput but try and avoid it with wood as sometimes it creates a coloured slurry which can soak into the grain. I have found that rolling it between sheets of baking parchment also works well ( I used this technique in my video where I coloured the Milliput turquoise). All the best, Jim

Really enjoyed this project Jim, especially the chevron design. I used Milliput years ago to model some parts for a 1932 Ford roadster hotrod I built (they were used for casting aluminium one off parts), never thought I'd see it as a medium to accent wood turned pieces. Next time you roll your millionth out, try putting a second piece of grease proof paper over the top and then use your roller onto the paper .... don't know much about wood turning, but I have 'kitchen skills'! Great project 👍
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 7 лет назад
Thanks Janine, I do now use that technique when I want more even sheets. I think I may have shown it in my video called the Bubinga Birdseye Banded bowl. I like the more random patterns you get by hand squidging. Milliput is very sticky and will even stick to baking parchment, it takes a bit of mastering. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. All the best, Jim.

excellent results! do you think color can be mixed into this putty prior to setting?
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 8 лет назад
Thanks, apparently colour can be added, Milliput suggest pure pigment powder ( best with the White putty I would think ) have a look on their website, I have put a link in the description, there are quite a few tips on colouring on there. The different Milliput colours can be blended together and I have found that some great marble effects can be achieved. Jim.

Great video's Jim! I really enjoy what you've done and it's given me a number of ideas to embellish some of my turnings. I wonder if you can mix some fine metal powder into it without harming the turning/durability of the product (i.e.; copper, bronze, aluminum powder, etc.)? Thanks sooo much for sharing and I'm looking forward to future videos from you! Safe turning always!
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 8 лет назад
I have done a fair bit of resin cast bronze work, so have wondered this myself. You can add powder to the putty but it will make it a bit crumbly. I have a video coming up shortly where I am modifying the putty ( not with metal powder ) but my technique needs modifying. I think too much metal powder would be needed to achieve a good aesthetic result, I have some ideas that may overcome this but untested. Thanks for your comments, Jim.

Hi Jim can you add coloured inks or spirit stains to milliput to make different colours.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 7 лет назад
Hi Andrew, yes you can colour the white Milliput, have a look through my earlier videos and I did a couple where I did some colouring. It is quite messy to do, I use pigment powder with epoxy resin as a carrier. I have not tried spirit stains yet but it is on my list list of things to try. Cheers, Jim.

do you have to put epoxy on the wood then the milliput or just the milliput, ,,,thank you
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 7 лет назад
Hello Guy. Sometimes I coat the recess in a slow set epoxy resin but it is not always needed and I did not do it in these bowls. Milliput is very sticky on its own, I only use epoxy resin when I think the joint may be under more stress, such as a full thickness inlay or if the Milliput is going to be carved or textured. Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim, Your work are fantastic, I have to admit, I'm in love :))) But what are you using for such a polish? It is as well,waterproof? I might try to do some when I will have some time ( just for fun and for curiosity regarding "how far my imagination can go" :P ) And, if you are kind and I'm sure you are, from where can I buy Milliput epoxy putty and the substance for polish? :) Thx in advance, your work are amazing!

Many thanks for your very kind words, I'm glad you like what I do. In this video I used sanding sealer and sanded to 1200 grit. I used a microcrystalline wax to finish. The sanding sealer is cellulose and is made by Chestnut products and is widely available in the UK but I'm not sure if available worldwide. The wax I use is called Renaissance Wax and is available on eBay. Milliput is available on Amazon and many other places, best google it. I have now started using Yorkshire Grit for much of my finishing ( see my latest video) .I hope this helps, Jim.

if you want to roll it out put the milliput in ziplock bag and roll it thin as you like
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 8 лет назад
I have found the best way is to roll it between sheets of baking parchment, which I show in my next video. I tried it in ziplock bags and it just sticks to them. For most of my projects I prefer the more random look that hand pressing gives. Some ziplock bags may be better than others though. All the best, Jim

Maybe your mahogany is some thing else. I have had the same trouble turning what we call Asobe in UK IPE general / commen name Ironwood. A lot of sharpening no shavings only dust. Also used for harbour protection as it can with stand salt water and baricalls dont grow on it. Just a sugestion. David.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 8 лет назад
It could be, but most people who have looked at, think it is most likely a type of mahogany. I think it is probably mahogany but it is very old and weathered and has just gone very hard and brittle. It has a slight musty smell to it, I suspect it was probably left outside for some time in its past. It is a bit of a mystery as to what it was taken from. I suspect it may have been a piece of fitting from a ship. Cheers, Jim
@dr.duly.6926
@dr.duly.6926 8 лет назад
With the extra info you put in you answer I am sure it is IPE. If you are on FB then I can show you what I think you have. The colouring is very much like mahogany. David.

Yes I think you are right. I looked it up on the wood database when I got home from work and it looks spot on, the specific gravity is correct too. A good spot by yourself ! The grain and pores look identical. The wood database is well worth looking at if you haven't done so, loads of great information on there. Thanks for your help, all the best, Jim.
