She gets down to business. Most youtubers spend 30 secs on intro, then 30 secs on weather report, 30 secs on coffee, 90 secs on run to store, 30 sec on outro. They bump 13min video upto 16-18min with fillers. I guess that's part of the game. Maybe have a catch phrase then release a t-shirt with the phrase. Hehe

The hardest part in learning renovations…is beginning. Just start. Take pictures so you can understand the layers. And when it feels too big..slow down, take a beat, and break down the project into one board at a time. And once you are done, you will gain so much insight into building processes that you will be unstoppable! :)

Since you are replacing windows anyways, consider changing the size of the one in the kitchen and put the sink under it. Then that wall could be a longer run of countertop. If you change both windows to just slightly shorter, you could do a brilliant ‘L’ kitchen which will give you the best layout for usability. Love what you are doing Tia!

I am now wishing that I had suggested this trick when I first started watching your channel. It would have saved you a TON of sweeping. Heavy duty tarps, or canvas, covering the floors and tacked up where the baseboards were removed. All of the dust and debris from the plaster removal, all of the insulation, is simply rolled up and dragged to the dumpster. If you use cheap tarps, they are disposable as well. And fans, blowing out and into cheap furnace filters will help clear the air of the dust that is everywhere. Snow shovels make great dustpans. I am very much enjoying watching this project. I look forward to watching each episode.

My parents grew up in ND. Don't get cheap windows because the wind 🌬️ never stops blowing where you are at. Fortunately Marvin has a factory in Fargo so you can get good windows in 10 to 14 days. Get the best you can afford. R-3 are standard, R-5 costs just a little bit more.

I am an old-time carpenter. I would recommend removing the Latin plaster. It may contain asbestos. This would also give you the ability to add new insulation into the walls plus the vapour barrier. Normally, you would hire an abatement team to remove that since everything is ripped apart now I would go the extra step.
@michaelmoran6861
@michaelmoran6861 2 дня назад
It may be worthwhile taking a sample of the plaster and getting it tested for asbestos. That will help identify the best route to go down.

I'm pretty sure, in an earlier video, Tia said the old plaster didn't contain asbestos. So it sounds like a sample was tested. It was around when Tia first started tearing out the interior walls down to the framing in the kitchen/bath rooms. I agree with you, though. Proper vapor barrier and insulation are excellent reasons to do it (especially considering it's in North Dakota, right?).

I admire what you're doing there and like the changes to the new wall placement. Having said that, please allow me to make a suggestion that will elevate your framing from modern standard to first class: install blocking between all studs at the bottom and cats (called firestops in balloon framing, noggins in the UK) at the midpoint. In this case use the old studs that you removed or any cutoffs from the new ones. Cut two of the same exact length at the same time, one for the lower block, one for the cat and fit them tightly, This ensures parallelism while absolutely preventing any twisting that might occur overtime, greatly stiffens the wall, and provides twice the nailing area at the bottom of the sheetrock and base molding. Fasteners up thru the plate and into the end grain of the studs does not provide the stability of tow nailing, and neither is anywhere the equal of blocking. Put your odds and ends to good use wherever possible for $$$ Highest regards and best wishes for your continued success.

Hey Tia, I would recomend gutting all the walls down to the studs. This way you can have your electricain run the wires with no hassles. It also give you the oppertunity to replace the insulation (seeing that you are in N. D. it gets cold there). New vapour barrier would be next then drywall. The other thing would be to change the window near the new toilet to a smaller one. IF you can insulate the floors from the basement, (basements are always cold) this should stop the heat/cold transfer, and living area should be nice and cozy during winter. Use Rockwool insulation it's water and fire proof.

@@janicemacgowan5114 Ah, that part! I wasn’t sure myself so I did an internet search. I did see that moths prefer “dark undisturbed” places to lay their eggs. I also saw the reason for windows in closets was to add light and improve air flow. I am assuming the light and ventilation together discouraged the moths from staying in the closet? They did say, however…if the window was open, the moths can come in through that window. So, how would one get the ventilation without letting the moths in? That part didn’t make sense to me. I came to the conclusion that it might be an old wives tale, perhaps?

I know you just went through your "Final" bathroom layout making one entrance from the spare bedroom. But! I seriously think that will be a big mistake. Think about coming in the back door from doing yard work or coming back from being out and you have to use the bathroom, you'll have to go through the kitchen, dining room, living room and through the spare room to use the one and only bathroom. Think of Re-sale too, 99.99% will want a entrance to the bathroom from another door without having to enter into a bedroom to do so.

I am in agreement with this, I have the same issue, I am making one door through the Kitchen… makes sense, but honestly if you have a guest, or a new baby sometime later, you don’t want to disturb them, plus the resale value will be better because of this decision I know you want it laid out a certain way, but it’s crucial to get it done now and done well though out. Move the tub to the opening door area, move the new wall, and then toilet in the middle, sink in corner of the two windows. Opens it more, gives you a tiny bit more privacy and it won’t cost much more, in fact just a bit of wood for the huge floor opening. I truly hope you can think about it before making any more plans. God bless

Couple of trim tips, trim puller listed below saved my trim (124 yr old house) so I could repurpose or return the vintage wood, and it’s easier to remove all sorts of boards with the width and a little clip that gently pops the trim or beam, whatever apart from its location. Bummed I didn’t know sooner or would have recommended. I bought two type. Prefer this one but the heavy duty version for floor with a small pry handle is helpful in some instances. What I’m doing with some of the trim I’m not returning is flipping it. Using the untouched back. Planing it. Then returning the board to the project to reveal the original nature of the board(s) prior to stain, paint, etc. In my case the floor trim is significant. It was not maintained well. Rather then strip it am removing and flipping this, as well. Plane the now front. Flip plus it’s upside down. Since the wood was rotes in a decorative curve decline. Now, either can plane the top which was the bottom with a curve and cap it with a new piece of trim from Restore with Habitat for Humanity or get a new one. As back in the day someone removed the decorative top. The result is original wood trim. Can be stained. For the vents which are wrought iron, soak them in 5% vinegar heated on the stove in a vintage turkey pan. Once loose can remove if there is paint and use a wire brush to help with the design parts. If you have anything like this. Then, spray black. Rustoleum semigloss for easy dusting. Added this in case anyone doing a reno could use the idea. The wood is so nice, with a little love could be repurposed or returned. I decided for the windows to refurbish the wall to be flat. No trim. The jams are oak with a curved edge. This matches the flipped floor trim. When my German shepherd dies will treat the sanded floors, trim, and the jambs match. Some of the interior windows are black or charcoal so against the oak jambs and some oak and others original flooring with light color walls look modern while calling back to the original intent of wood throughout the house. (someone at sometime replaced the upstairs floors with oak, but the first floor is a vintage board. Forget which type.) The repurposed wood is being made into a countertop. Decorative wall. Shelves inside a built in floor to ceiling pantry cabinet that is also built around the chimney so depth wise parts are narrow. Etc. Tried a hand planer and it’s difficult to make the panel perfect. Had some mistakes here and there. Oscillation sander can only do so much. Invested in a reasonably priced planner that when I added the cost of buying new modern wood justified the cost. I’ll list the name below in case you’re thinking this is something worth doing. I’m also using it on pallet wood and other repurposed boards, so this would make a huge difference for you to save money with repurposed vintage boards and others you could find, have donated, pallets, etc. Final tip, have you heard of poor man’s fiber glass? Titebond glue number 2 though I used 3. Painter drop cloth. Glue this to wood. You can sand it smooth when it’s dry. Then primer. Then paint. It has the effect of fiberglass. I tried this on an interior 4x8 1/2 board. For a roof of a small tool shed. I used an old shower curtain for one part to see how this went. More difficult to get flat compared to the canvas drop cloth. But, it’s been two years of Midwest winters and the board is as though it is not outside. Solid and the fiberglass like roof is holding up amazing. I’m repurposing black out curtains for poor man’s fiberglass next to make some feral cat houses. It’s great for so many uses. Will only need repainting in ten to 15 years depending on the weather abuse. Otherwise it’s a solid option for many needs. People use this technique for DYI RV’s. Mentioning it here as you may have use for it in some capacity on your homestead. Huge fan of your work. And, inspiring me. I’m in the process of adding the last four windows to the second floor. Vibe ya on the work. Thanks for sharing your journey. Hope the tips and ideas are helpful 😊 Kind regards, Patience VEVOR Planer, Thickness Planer, 13" Width Worktable Benchtop Planer, Two-Blade, 15-Amp 1800W Powerful Motor, 12" Extended Infeeding Table, Low Noise for both hard & soft wood material removal Zenith by Danco Trim Puller ZN700001, Pry Bar, Wrecking Bar, Crowbar Multi-Tool for Baseboard, Molding, Siding, Trim Removal, Remodeling and Demolition

You should be snug as a bug in a rug for the winter with all these improvements! Consider a stained glass window for that closet. Can't wait to see those pretty wood floors refinished. I would have been tempted to angle that bathroom corner so you have more room to walk to the toilet around the tub.

Suggestions - The window trim - if each window's trim was bundled, marked which window it was and from what room, would make it easier when time to reinstall. Windows - Kitchen - I would have a shorter window, for the one wall that faces the side yard, put the kitchen sink under that window and have cabinets along this entire wall. Have upper cabinets on this entire wall. The other kitchen wall, facing the back, I'd put the stove on that wall, centered between the counter and the window on the far left. Have counters on both sides of the stove and open shelves on both sides of the range hood. The wall that backs up to the basement stairs - I'd put the fridge and Hoosier Cabinet on this wall. Turn the H Cabinet into a coffee bar. The living room windows - I would flip flop the windows with the front door, put the front door to the right side of that wall and windows on the other side. From the outside front, the house would look more symmetrical, door more centered and a window on each side. This would also provide a better traffic flow through the house and better furniture placement. You'd be able to put a sofa along the long wall and not be in the way of the door. As it is now, there isn't really room for a sofa along that wall without the door opening onto it. As long as you're doing new windows, splurge for a new door or can rework the existing door. OR....look through all the stored salvaged doors that were stored in the house, see if you can find a really cool looking one for the front door, with charm and character. Maybe even another cool door to mount sideways above your bed for a cool headboard. I'm glad to hear you'll be keeping that built in shelf in the middle room, nice to have. Personally, with the bathroom - I would close the door from the bath to the bedroom and have access to the bath from the kitchen. I would center the tub under the window, put the toilet behind the closed off bedroom door, facing the tub and the sink in the same place it was. I would not use a vanity sink, but a pedestal sink to provide more floor space. In the area you've added by moving the wall, good place for a linen storage closet.

The good news, Miss, is that the window/door trim doesn't look too intricate so you should be able to "easily" replace what is cracked/broken. It is very good that your old Dad is having YOU do a lot of the work, that way YOU will know how to do these things by yourself in the future. I've been doing this with my boys for years and it has paid off in a big way. Much respect and high regards.

Save all the broken moulding you removed. Use the good pieces in the most visible important rooms. Then pick a room, perhaps the art room, and use new wood. That way, the woodwork will all be the same except in the most unseen room. In our 122 yr. old house, built on tree trunks, we bought ceiling tiles and put them up. They have BEAUTIFUL, softly imprinted tiles with vintage patterns that are gorgeous!! The cost may be equivilent to replacing drywall or plastering. Just wear clean gloves to install and staple up! Please check them out before starting the ceilings! I like the bathroom solution because it offers a great entry way off the kitchen. The mirror and plant on a stand will be perfect, or even a small set of hooks for jackets and a shoe rack, both small in stature. That will be your primary entrance, something to consider. Keep at it, steady progress being made, fingers crossed you can stay within your budget, a daunting task these days! Hugs from Michigan!

Old wood finishes sometimes contain arsenic. It can be absorbed through the skin, so it's slightly more dangerous than lead. When you refinish your floors, you might consider wearing something like a Tyvek suit just as an abundance of caution. I've really enjoyed your videos, and look forward to seeing the rest of your home come together!
