This was good! Very helpful and I can tell a lot of work. I tried to create a flex class but had no response so I’ve archived it for now. Still thinking of others that might work in this format that would be easier that live lessons. So glad you are finding success with OS.

I used my personal zoom account, and taught the lessons as if there were a student on the other end of the screen. I recorded the Zoom session, then uploaded the videos to RU-vid as private.

@@bravenlygirlmaryann thanks so much for this great video! I have 2 ongoing classes that are doing so well and have been wanting to do a flex class for each-now I have a direction! I also want to finally do my beginner sewing flex class. I was going to ask this same question on how to record but I see you record in Zoom on your personal account. Can you tell me where we find the "record" function and how we retrieve that recorded video to upload to You Tube? Thanks ssoooooooo much!

Hi! On the bottom of the zoom screen, You can click “more” and you should see “record”. It will begin recording until either you stop it or you end the zoom session. Once the session has ended, it will ask you where you want to save the recording. I use the Microsoft editing software on my computer before uploading to RU-vid;)

It’s been slow… only a handful of learners. However, I’m not good about posting the class because I forget about it! (Can you believe that after all that work?🙈🤷🏻‍♀️). I have had several parent requests for me to open a section:)

Hi! I recorded them all in Zoom, and I store them as unlisted videos on RU-vid, as well as on an external hard drive as back up. Hope that helps!

OMG! I was just so curious about flex classes. Then I had this idea of doing this very same thing. Except without researching I honestly thought OMG is this not acceptable from OS? I'm relieved to hear that I can do this. However, can I use the same description for my flex with some minor adjustments obviously. Thank you so much for this valuable information. Your life and professional experience is almost my exact situation; homeschooling children and figuring how to split up my weeks for flex classes. I can't wait to hear of your response from all the hard work you put in.

Hi! Are you asking if you can use the same description for your flex class as you use for your ongoing class? If so, then yes! Just tweak it to make sure parents understand how the flex class works:)

Thank you so much for all these helpful tips, like you I am sitting on a lesson or couple, trying to learn the processes of a Flex Class since I am not very successful with enrollment for the live classes, I would like to give FLEX a try. Do you pay RU-vid to upload classes, videos, welcome videos etc on the site for the Zoom? Thanks again for your time and sharing. Greatly Appreciative!!!

Nope! Just upload to RU-vid as unlisted (or private-but you have to have parent emails for private videos). I’ve had four flex students so far and have received great feedback! I teach about 215 students in live classes...but I’m hoping flex will take off as parents see how awesome a phonics flex can be!! Thank you for this insightful video. I’ve been going back and forth with the same conundrum and questions for my planned flex classes as well. I do have a question about the Private/Unlisted videos here on RU-vid: is there a risk someone else could access those videos without enrolling if one of the parents share those links with friends or family? What are Outschool’s policies about this? I would not be happy if my content gets leaked for free.

I guess there is always a risk, but it would be a copyright infringement for sure. You can post your videos as unlisted meaning anyone with a link can access them, or you can post privately meaning only approved emails can access them. This is more secure but also requires you to obtain parent email addresses.

Can you reflect on the success of your flex class? I see you offer it only by request currently. What's the reality of this type of class? Because i've been thinking about it but the more I research about it... it seems like a lot more work than I was counting on. And I'm not sure the reward will be worth it, after watching youtube videos and finding that some are not currently being offered. I appreciate your insight! Thanks.

My Flex class never took off. It was very time consuming to create, so I’m hoping to possibly repurpose the content one day. I would definitely research the market for Flex classes in your field of expertise and age group before deciding. I knew there was not a huge market for little ones to do FLEX, but I took a chance and put mine out there anyway because I believe it’s a really good idea for my classes, and a great option if you can’t make the LIVE class meetings. Unfortunately, I don’t think there are a lot of parents who search FLEX options, and OS doesn’t market them in the emails the way they do LIVE classes, so they are kind of lost on the website unless you intentionally search for them.

It's a pop culture themed literacy class that I think would make a good flex class, but after researching, I'm not willing to gamble on it. Hope you can turn your hard work into something that's helpful to families as well as a good income generator. Glad to see a fellow BTESLO members are still werkin' it out there in online teacher land! I miss the community we had built.

Thank you for this! You said in the video you didn’t know if this would be successful or not… so now that it’s been many months, did you find success with this style of class? I’m contemplating doing this with my Spanish courses since I can’t offer any more live classes.

Hi! Actually, I currently have student number 5 now… it has been a slooooow sell… I think it is a very effective option, but it hasn’t really caught on yet (at least for me)! I will say for most of the months between posting this video and now, I have only remembered to list it a handful of times! Soooo, I might’ve had more learners had I been better about creating sections. I was so busy with my ongoing classes that I forgot about posting it again for a long time. In fact, the last two students actually messaged me (at different times) and asked me to create a section for them because I had no sections created🙈. I recently just posted a lot of sections and got one enrollee from that, so I think if you keep sections up you will have more luck!

This is amazing! I am just grasping the ongoing class and would like to eventually start with the flex class. This may seem like a really silly question, but how do you make the alphabet letters you use to make your words in the phonics classes? I know you said you use Canvapro. I have CanvaPro, but can't determine where the lowercase letters are or how to create them. Help!

Hi! In the elements tab on Canva, type the letter you want, choose one, then change the color to fit your need. I hope that helps!
