i think the specific part of the song they were referring to when they made that comment sounds like the verse section of “you” by radiohead, but without the weird timing.
I love the irony of Rob being the guitar guy but this was all Andrew on guitar. I also cannot believe how stupidly good this song came out. Watching the process was inspirational; not every idea is good, but a great song is made by knowing which ideas to keep and which ones to toss. And of course, the top-tier muscianship of this amazing duo, and their deep friendship are the icing here. Everything about this video was fantastic to watch, making it a great last video of the season. I look forward to season 2 with everything at my core!
I’m getting massive post-grunge Seattle vibes 94-98 era. There is something else layered in that I can’t put my finger on influences wise but it’s so emotionally familiar and comfortable in a great way. It’s definitely “yep, I remember being here before. And that’s relaxing”
That something else is probably Mike Patton of Faith No More, and etc. I'm only 3:15 in, but already I hear influences from both FNM and also the grunge bands... and people are mentioning QoTSA
Early on in the video, I was definitely thinking the exact same thing. Later in the video, it morphed into something a little more modern sounding, but still had the influence.
I was hoping sooo bad that they'd figure out a way to also include "Bike Pile" riff in the middle of the song, but man, I loved SO MUCH how this one turned out
ripping the hardest riffs in a cardigan and leggings is like one of those things that when Andrew does it you don't even question it and it's fucking awesome!
This was probably one of my favourite riffs that you guys came up with so it’s definitely cool to see this come to life, I could definitely get some Queens of the Stone Age/Muse/Smashing Pumpkins vibes and I absolutely love it. Like that’s awesome, I’ll definitely be checking the song out on Spotify and I’m also super looking forward to Season 2. This series has been absolutely awesome and really makes me wish I could come up with riffs like that lol
I love the fact that Andrew always uses that beautiful old guitar. IIRC, it's a cheap and old guitar that he has had forever, and is very attached to, and I think that's lovely. I respect guitarists who prioritize having multiple high quality guitars, but there is something about growing attached to your cheap and unique guitar that I just love.
His electronic stuff is cool, but the dude has an absolute TALENT for pumping out headbangin riffs. Every single one has that sauce that makes it amazing. I'd be curious to hear how he'd write a true groove metal riff. I feel like he hasn't ever really gotten into that territory, but he probably has the chops for it.
This series deserves so much more recognition than it gets. The produciton quality is better than half the stuff you see on TV, its super entertaining, and the format works so well. Could see this getting picked up by a network or something someday.
I have no words to express the joy this series brought me. Seeing that i'll have to stay without it for a while broke my heart. Can't wait for this year's First Of October.
I love that y'all talk about "collecting riffs". I've been trying to do something like that for myself. I started trying to do a "musical diary" type thing, so trying to record on my phone recorder app for at least 10 minutes a day.. anything that comes to mind or just messing around. The important thing is to record anything at all! What I've found is sometimes the riffs are similar day to day, and sometimes they morph into something I didn't expect, and that can have a magical feeling. I've been doing it for over a year now (most days, not every day) but when you look back on the recordings and you have a years worth or two, it's like an immediately accessible vault of information from your musical past. Some of it can be "bad", some "good", but when you go back to listen and you're in a different headspace, it's all interesting. a lot of the times, I find the bad stuff sounds the best, or inspires new ideas the most. Thanks y'all for all you do to record this content and show your creative process, it's the best! :)
I haven't seen anyone point this out yet, but the vocal melody of the verses is the same as 'You' by Radiohead, but I can't imagine Rob or Andrew would know that song so it probably sounds familiar due to it being a very simple melody
I've just posted exactly the same comment ^^. 100% agree. During all the video, I had it on the top of my tongue. Andrew and Rob have a large culture, so I would not be surprised if they know this song. Maybe they just did something similar unconsciously
Sometimes when I watch such talented creators I end up thinking I should just give up playing music, not so with you guys it's infectious and inspiring 👍
I had a bit of a Smashing Pumpkins feel, I think what you were guys were hearing was Cherub Rock - similar melodies and chords. Sounded great, the vocals were super powerful!
Very grateful for this show. It's so inspiring and entertaining. I genuinely feel nourished by it. Mad props to everyone involved, and I look forward to the next season!
Love how dreamy this turned out. Love the isolated bass and synth during the verse, the killer riffs (glad you just left that original riff without any vocals) the high reverb on the vocals, and then the triple stacked vocals in the pre-chorus? Chorus? This could nearly pass for one of my favorite genres of music, shoegaze.
Fantastic! You've knocked it out of the park again 🥰 Sad this is the last one for now, but I look forward to seeing more in the future! I assume you're gearing up for First of October soon, so it makes sense to take a break now. Looking forward to seeing what y'all make this year 👀
Up until the sponsor break I thought this sounded like a tribute to the 90s (Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Space Hog, Brother Cane, etc.). After you added the rest of it, it turned into a whole new thing that merely stood on the shoulders of giants. I feel fortunate to have witnessed this. Thank you!
I KNEW THIS REMINDED ME OF SOMETHING!!! Look up Bullets Per Minute OST and literally the whole game has music like this. ugh such a vibe, thank you for reminding me about this gem
You should take that slow riff and do like a “slow riffs made fast” and a “fast riffs made slow” where you come up with a riff at one tempo but then have to write a song around that riff in a different tempo.
Yall killed this shit. It's always fun watching and going, I can't wait to see how this all comes together. I am never disappointed. Whoever is mixing and recording this stuff too is really good.
If this had a few odd time signatures and Neil Peart it’d be a pretty good later-era Rush tune lmaooo. This show makes every two weeks feel like the first of October, man
god i need to know how to edit video with music like this, andrew should totally make a indepth video on how he does his editing with syncing up the footage and music
whole 1st season has been banger after banger, we got all of this and then I assume first of october will also be going on once again this year so we are just *feasting* in 2023 with rob and andrew content
This is my favorite episode editing wise. All the episodes have been awesome, but this one to me shows the song writing process the best. The moments of making the song and trying ideas that sometimes don’t work, but then the journey to what does work. Andrew, Rob, and the team have earned the break for sure. Already super excited for when season two comes around.
I’m really glad you guys revisited the 100 riff stuff because that video blew my mind. I love the high energy wall of fuzz and crashing cymbals. I’ve loved every episode of this show so far. Every time Rob and Andrew work together makes me really excited to pick up my guitar and I’m just so grateful for it. The energy you guys have working together is really inspiring. Can’t wait for the next season! Hope you guys feel proud of what you’ve been doing, watching the progression of your careers for the past 6 years or so has been an absolute joy
Been following the both of you for years, and love how youve been working together like crazy. This idea is great, and I'm excited for the First of October album this year!
Sonic Boom might be the best RU-vidr Music thing out there. It's hilarious, super creative and endlessly rewatchable, take a good break, because you earned it. PLEASE don't feel rushed this series is a gift and once it returns we are all still gonna be here, if that is in a few months or in a year.
I’m so glad you two found each other, I remember watching you both separately for a long time, a collab I never knew I needed. You have the perfect studio staff and the perfect chemistry 🤩
You should have an episode where you write a song with only sounds you make with your body. But no vocal chords! For notes you could whistle and sample it. Or get even more creative and pat your cheeks or something. I definitely think it’d be cool to see what kind of music you can make with that. Anyways, y’all are so inspiring, thanks for the episodes!!!
What a great first season. I’ve been watching you, Andrew, ever since the “songs to wear pants to days”. One of my favorite songs to date has been your song “water.” But I’ve got to say that this most recent era of your creative journey from your travels through space and time to sonic boom has been my favorite to watch. That being said. I would love another “we are what you tweet” with Gunnarola.
i could see rob and andrew being great session musicians as a back half of their career especially rob since he was the best part of that nostalgia critic the wall album. but both of the have such a great flow in the studio so i could see a very successful session career for these guys
holy shit i only just noticed Sam Battle's VCO in there! Those knobs are recognizable from a mile away. So fun to see stuff from one music channel in another!
Im subscribed to close to 150 channels on RU-vid and Sonic Boom is by far my favorite series on the platform. Season one was epic and brought so much joy, cant wait for season two!!!
Please make more, this is so well done from the good vibes to the talent, the editing and slow reveal of the song in progress. This is my favorite, massively big ups
