As an Asian I can relate to that. I always dont have time for myself, cuz after school I would also work and cook dinner. And then when I went through my phone in ONLY 5 MINUTES, they'll said that I have been on my phone all day, like wth?! And we're not allowed to have privacy, last time I told my mom abt my crush, then not even 1 sec later the whole family knows it, now their gonna spread it more. And they dont let us close the door in my room. My parents r like "ur room is only for sleeping, thats why its called a bedroom, if ur not sleeping then go to the living room" xD And if I talk back I swear they will probably gonna kick me out, thats why we dont say something 😂

Her Mother being a weak "villain" rather misses the point. She wasn't actually a villain. She was Mei's Mother and never really meant her harm. She was there to punish her and being her back to the temple. This was really a fight between Mother and Daughter magnified to epic proportions. As for the consequences, nobody got hurt and Ming had to raise 100 million dollars, so I think that's a pretty big consequence to be honest.
@kirkdarling4120
@kirkdarling4120 Год назад
Yes. The main danger was that in Mei's unreasoning anger, she and Ming would have the same kind of all-out fight that Ming and Grandma Wu had, resulting in destroying their relationship. But Mei had a better grounding in friends and father who had anchored her self-esteem, so she was able to step back. She wasn't in the complete free-fall that Ming had been in.

Ok first I'd say the last few movies they have put out didn't have a Villain. Wasn't one in Bruno either for example, as to the Panda on the news, and no follow up or consequences to the Panda pocalips, I'd say it's a nod to one of two things if not both. First being Giant bad ass mythological beasts of one kind or another always appears in there parts of the word, so it's not as big a deal. Kyju battles and whatnot. And yea I probably spelled that wrong. Sorry. Other being the importance of the temple and family within the community, by the time she reverted back to human a good part of the crowd booked it, and the rest was a bit away from the commotion, add in they didn't know at first if it was part of the show or not. The fanatical fans of 4Town being the type that if 4Town said dont press charges just make them pay the damages then thats what would happen, and the family or the temple being biggest tourist attraction in the area. So good for local economies, could be full of crap. But that's my theory anyway

“She really didn’t say anything? If that was me I would have said something to my mom” This is one of the best examples of how different cultures are around the world. We asians are afraid to explain or defend for ourselves in any situation because it is considered RUDE to any asian household. We consider our parents as sacred and bad luck will come upon the kids if they show any sign of disrespect and yes talking back is a major offense to parents.

Children helping their parents in the family shop/business is not a big deal. Also, i imagine ming had her panda situation a lot later than mei mei because the fight with grandma is about jin/the dad. Maybe that's why they thought they had more time.
@awesomepawesome8957
@awesomepawesome8957 2 года назад
45:27 I would wanna question that criticism because it could've been one of three things. One, Ming took responsibility and was either put out on parole or simply tasked with raising funds by the police to rebuild the sky dome, hence the whiteboard we saw to 100M in the last scene. Two, When the family floated up into the air, they were transported elsewhere and so no one realized she was the one responsible for the incident. Three, Ming Returned to her normal state, but because of the paranormal circumstances, I would guess the police easily bought that whatever happened to her was not something she could control, or she wasn't in the right state of mind, but she still wanted to fix her actions by raising the money (personally the 3rd's my best assumption). As for the villain being weak, I mean I don't think the villain was ever intended to be a big menacing bad, Ming has always intended to try and bring as much care to Meilin as she could, but she simply didn't realize her methods weren't allowing Meilin to be her own person. That being said, I wouldn't say she was ever created for the role of a villain, but she simply ended up slipping into it without realizing it, which aint a bad thing cause I felt that added some unique complexity to her character.
@vickylikesthis
@vickylikesthis 2 года назад
THIS. People need to realize that disney/pixar been going without villains for a bit now. Soul and encanto are like that too. It's difficult, people are flawed, but i really don't like audiences not trying to be sympathetic to ming.

Also, Ming has the potential to turn into a nearly 100 meter tall red panda with rage issues which was intended to fight off enemy hoards. I think, for the sake of law enforcement and/or Canadian National Guard, having Ming voluntary take responsibility was the right move.

As much as i love the asian experiences being represented and portrayed, it does get annoying to see white audiences judging asian parenting (flawed but they're trying the best and not inferior to the mainstream parenting, just different) idk. I'm getting uncomfortable with how many failed to see how hard ming is trying
@KupcakeKitten
@KupcakeKitten 2 года назад
I didn't grow up with overbearing parents but I did grow up with guardians that just assumed that because I was a child meant I had no clue what I was talking about any of the time. I try to tell them I had depression for many years and they always said the same thing, "You're just a child, you can't have depression you don't even know what that really is." When I graduated they refused to pay for my college unless I went right away, I wanted a year off to get a job and figure out what I wanted to do because they said being a vet tech wasn't good enough, but they wouldn't allow that. So I can see where the audience is coming from when regarding some of Ming's actions, some are understandable because she was just trying to be a good parent, but others she was acting as if her own child wasn't a human being with her own mind.
@vickylikesthis

I don’t think that there had to be a villain. This was an exaggerated argument between a mother and daughter over becoming her own person, growing up. Did it have to be a giant Kaiju battle? No, but it wouldn’t be as fantastical as big red pandas duking in out. I might be a male, but I appreciated the multipurpose symbol of the red panda and how they contextually integrate it into the larger inner conflict of finding yourself outside your parents’ view. Also, it is a film about generational trauma and breaking that cycle. I didn’t feel it dragged at all. The pacing was fairly brisk and faster than most Pixar movies, but I don’t think they rushed through the more poignant and powerful moments. It’s concise and pointed even with it’s sprawling narrative, it’s just building up the atmosphere, character, and not making this a cheap ploy to put down the lead’s experience to preserve an outdated/overbearing mentality that parents’ are perfect or that they are incapable of adapting or changing. During puberty, everyone has a whirlwind of emotional changes/physical that is widely universal. The specificity of a female’s experience is a human experience. If people can empathize with droves of movies about boy’s adolescence, I don’t see why not a girl’s. I’m glad that Pixar made this and had a female write/direct this. It’s about time girls see themselves through eyes of an actual female, not through some male’s perspective. It’s cool that my niece can watch something she can relate to.

Jin is one of my favourite characters in the movie. When you watch it a second time knowing how he is, you see things more for what they are. Like he was the one that gave her the plushy, that tried to make her feel better when he said abiut the colour red, he's the optimistic one in the conversation she overheard, even just small things before like inspecting the bao she made and deeming it perfect. He just wants his daughter to be happy no matter what. And even in the arena, all he wants is Ming back to her normal self, he had the chalk out painting the huge circle before the grandmother even said anything. Just a great family guy all over... And the end of credits scene is cute.

Its believed or theorized that the mom is so much bigger because she repressed her desires and wants while trying to please her own mother and being perfect all her life, then when her own mother rejected the boy she loved they got in an argument which unleashed the panda in the worst way possible, resulting in her hurting her mother and destroying half the temple,

45:48@MAC React, Christian, they were on the news, "Pandapocalypse 2002," remember? Mei-Mei's family runs the Lesser Panda Shrine in Toronto--that's their business, and the Lee family home is on that property. My guess is 4Town stepped in and asked for smaller charges--we see a photo of them with the group in the near the ancestors' stone memorial tablets. While things didn't go as planned, this incident turned what would have been a routine concert into an epic event for the group, and it even moved the leader of the group to tears--we saw that, lol. Ming (Mei-Mei's mother) may have gotten off easy, sort of, she has to pay for the repairs of the dome, which has a price tag of 100 million Canadian dollars, if I remember correctly. I don't know about you, but if I was the mayor of a city and had someone offering to pay for the damages over jail time, I'd take them up on that offer. No new taxes for the people of Toronto and no one was physically hurt, anyway. The Lee family, judging from the ending, also made Toronto an even bigger travel destination in the end, so they've brought money to whole city too. This was a very fun movie. I heard about the reviews after watching it, and they made me think of the reviews Captain Marvel got, and the testosterone attack the female avengers received in Endgame when they came to Captain Marvel aid towards the end of the movie--some very vocal men just can't stand to see scenes with women being the focus/hero. It's wild, sure, but as we often see in society, some people really cannot stand change. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie and pretty much every other Disney movie with female leads. If you haven't already seen/reacted to Disney's Brave, why not give that a watch. It sort of reminds me of this movie, but sort of in reverse =D Catch you guys in a couple of days with Moon Knight!

Frankly I saw Jurassic Park probably younger than I should have and it gave me nightmares of Trexes for a long time. But growing up I still love it. I don't think this movie is going to be harmful to kids in anyway and they'll probably go back and watch it again when their older and be like "ooooooh, I get that now"

There's a few, if you like, endings to Pixar movies that are unlikely. The ending of Luca, for example, where everyone accepts them as "sea monsters" when all through the movie, the humans wanted to kill sea monsters. Did that take away from the movie or it's message? Absolutely not. As for the bit about Panda Mei never being in danger from her Mom - you're missing the point. This wasn't a villain out to destroy Mei.....this was an argument between Mother and daughter blown up to gargantuan proportions. Having said that, Mei did nearly get stomped on by her Mom. 😁 The Panda's were simply an allegory to convey puberty, life changes and learning to accept yourself as you are. To me, its one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Can you imagine the test screening they had? A bunch of 13 year-old girls watching the cringe moments with barely repressed screams of embarrassment? Those scenes with her mother were like the penultimate nightmare for girls that age. If those incidents happened to you, would you EVER return to your school? I would be like, "Either send me to boarding school or to live with other relatives far away or I'm going to end up in prison for murdering my mother".

So did dad become a 4town fan because of what happens at the concert? OR was he a secret 4 Townie the whole time? After all he didn't jump on board when mom was clowning the band early.

He hadn't really listened to them till he saw Mei's video, and how happy it made her. Of course, a crazy concert where 4Town comes in to help save the day and create a glowing pillar of light to the heavens sure helps!

This movie surprised me by how much I liked it when I did not expect to like it that much. I gotta admit, that 4Town song was catchy. LOL...the only "unrealistic" thing about this movie I thought was, what middle school or high school boys & girls even know what deltoids are?? I felt I could relate to some stuff in this movie, even though I am a guy. I do agree that just because you cannot relate to everything in a movie or tv show does not mean you cannot still enjoy it. I had no problem with the 2nd act, but if anything, I thought the last act kinda feel apart for me a bit. Still fun, but if anything, the last part especially with the panda vs panda fight and all the stuff after that felt a bit more "childish" and "cartoony" for me (except the heart-to-heart with Mei-Mei and her mom as a teen). LOL..I know that sounds very odd to say in reference to this particular movie, but I felt the ending had a different type of tone for me from everything before it. But, that's just me. LOL..I still would not mind seeing you guys watching Encanto a 2nd time and seeing you two sing along with "We don't talk about Bruno".

The guy that started those boy groups, started out as a scammer taking money from people because he claimed to be owner of a plane base and he was claiming to be selling tickets. He ran and then started up these all boy groups, while sleeping with the minors of these groups. The guy even claimed to be part of these groups even though he never sang with them. He claims to be the 6th member of both BackStreetBoys and NSYNC. Their music is good but their CEO/Founder are evil as hell. Idk why they even allowed him to do all this.

I recently watched the movie myself for the first time and I have to say that I HATE MeiMei's mother. MeiMei comes home from school, works there and doesn't feel like she has any free time. Then her mother sees these drawings and thinks he did something to her or something and embarrasses her. She also doesn't accept MeiMei and doesn't respect her at all. The girl just asked if she could go to a concert and the mother just turned the wheel. God, how I hate her. I think I never hated someone so much, except Umbridge from Harry Potter. Thank you for you reaction, I really enjoyed it!

Wait a dam minute- !spoilers! Is it just me or does the angry and happy red panda symbolises something like I've seen the movie and it was shown That Mei Mei mom got angry and turned into an angry red panda while Mei mei is a happy red panda because that's what she wants so in my opinion I think this symbolises the two 🧍

You guys should really watch the Canadians watching reaction of this. It a reactor channel of a guy and a girl. The guy is a child of a recently immigrated family and as the show goes along he explains how normal many of the things we as long lineage North American's view as absurd or abusive. Trust me, it makes the show make a lot more sense to those not used to the immigrant perspective. Also, I disagree with a couple of comments made about the show. I don't think the movie required a villain, because it was a coming of age movie, but a super hero movie. I haven't seen many coming of age movies with villains, because it's usually about the changing perspective of the main character, as they begin to under stand the complexities of the world around them. The learn that things aren't as black and white as heroes and villains. So, it really doesn't make sense to then have one. Also, you may have missed it, but there was a repercussion for the stadium destruction. If you noticed, her mom, after getting money from the tour group, filled in a value thermometer that was clearly marked as a repair the stadium fund. So, she may not be in jail, but she is financially liable for the repair costs. It's probably an easy miss on the first time through, so I don't blame you for missing it. It goes by quick.

I loved your reaction, although I can see you do not come from a strong-family based culture, I was 17 in 2002 and my mom would absolutely cross my face if I talked back, so I can understand why Mei-mei wouldn’t stand up for herself. But I think you misunderstood it a bit, there was no villain here, it was more like a grownup that didn’t go thought a healthy emotional development and therefore was perpetuating the cicle until her daughter help her see there is another way
