From what I gathered, the panda represents the hidden frustration and feelings that Mei bottled up inside her. Hence why when she turned into her panda, it was considerably small. She had just only realized how strict her mom is. Her mom was aware of her own mother’s tendencies for much longer. She felt a lot of guilt and anger so it explains why her panda was so huge compared to the others. This is also backed up by how the panda is brought out only when a strong emotion is expressed. That’s just my 2 cents

My sister in law recently told me a fellow mom at her daughters school told her to “watch out” for this movie because she said “within the first 15 minutes my daughter had QUESTIONS” Why are people so against answering their kid’s questions? I really do think it’s cruel for people to hide the fact that their daughters will bleed and cramp EVERY month until it happens. The whole taboo is what makes this such a traumatic thing for girls to experience until they figure out the normalcy of it on their own
@anna-gs6hp

It shouldn't be a taboo topic but still is. In 2022! Puberty and periods happen, and they are unavoidable. Do moms even remember the first time they got their period and probably needed guidance? Personally, I felt like the more fitting allegory here was not to do with periods/sexuality, but with the hormonal/emotional upheaval that comes with puberty. It's a coming of age movie concerning a young girl who, instead of repressing and locking away her excitement & passion & emotionality, instead looks to find a way to integrate that experience into her life in a healthy way. Or even that sense of like-- needing to find your own ideal way of living even when you love & respect where you've come from. I don't really think the metaphor here was ever meant to be 1 to 1, beat for beat, but instead it showcased a combination of experiences & challenges that girls tend to face as they transition through puberty, reconcile their distinct identities, and become invested in their own happiness separate from the expectations of others.

as someone who was once a 13 year old girl. This movie was perfect and really captures the awkward, weirdness of being 13. she literally turns into an animal literally. @joaomarcoscosta4647 2 года назад
Regarding that quote... I only half-agree with it. I mean, if the video's author was talking about how periods are not sexual... That wold make sense. But what he is saying is that there is nothing innately sexual about about a LITERAL red panda, and so, as long as with interpret the photos' scene literally, there is nothing sexual about it either. But here is the thing: even if something is not innately sexual, it may be used as a metaphor for something that is. For example, in the manga/anime series Beastars, carnivores eating herbivores is often treated as an allegory for sexual assault. And they are not subtle about it. The characters themselves talk about being unable to fully dissociate the feelings of hunger and arousal. And there is one character who, after eating a friend, keeps defending himself by saying he had their "consent." So, even if there is nothing innatele sexual about a predator eating prey... Withim the context of the series, this act is very much sexualised. And if the series at some point decides to treat it in a completely literal way, this will send mixed messages. Because the story itself already attributed a symbolic value to it. This is actually a very common issue with stories that use animals as metaphor for human problems, actually. "To which extent is this literally a story about animals, and to which extent this is about people?"... If you sometimes treat it as a metaphor, and sometimes ignore the metaphor and treat the story only in the most literal sense, you will most likely give mixed messages. Whether this is a problem in Turning Red or not, I don't know. I've yet to watch the movie. But assuming that her turning into a panda is used in a symbolic way to talk about puberty and sexual development... Well, I can't blame people who tought that using it to make some money was a bit creepy. I don't think that children who are mostly engaged with the movie's literal meaning are going to think of "nudes". And I'm sure the creators never intended for the photos to be interpreted that way. And the existence of that scene doesn't make it a "pedo-movie", nor does it mean the movie deserves to be "cancelled." But, if sometimes you want the audience to treat the panda as a metaphor, and sometimes you want them to treat it ONLY as a literal panda... Well, you cannot blame the audience when they get mixed messages.

The panda isn’t a metaphor for her period even, the period stuff was confusion from her mom. The panda is instead a metaphor for the emotional turmoil of that age when your life starts to turn focus from inside the family to outside, finding your own interests and peers where your parents are no longer the only people that matter. Her accepting the panda is a reconciliation with those emotions and coming to accept that changes in her life won’t always align with what her mother wants for her. In the end her mother reassures her too, that no matter where life takes Mei, that she’ll always love her and be proud of her.
@iantaakalla8180
@iantaakalla8180 2 года назад
And even if the panda was a period metaphor, it was taken in stride eventually by both Mei and Ming. It would also ironically further the message of growing into yourself as a teenager. Mei has periods and she adjusts to it nicely, like Mei has the panda and adjusts to it nicely.

I think if the people who have issues with it would stop assuming just period and instead think puberty as a whole it makes so much more sense. Cuties was justified hatred. Turning Red was unjustified fear. Wow, people were weird for feeling that way about her panda and the hustle of pandamania. The panda isn't just an allegory for periods, it's also just Mei coming into her own and breaking free from the limits she and her family put on her. Besides, ,there was a merch aspect to it. The way Mei and her mom make up and grow in their relationship should honestly get a pass. Ming recognizes her issues , has her husband to balance her out, and their dysfunctional relationship boiled over into millions of dollars of property damage. I think that would be enough to push them to be better lol.

It's crazy to me how upset people are that a girl likes boys. If it was a coming-of-age about a 13-year-old-boy crushing on girls, the reaction would be more like "haha boys will be boys". I know this because there are several movies about boys being actually creepy towards girls they "like" and they're considered classics. But the second a teenage girl draws pictures of a boy she likes, suddenly it's gross. Maybe the problem ISN'T that the characters are being sexualized, maybe it's because people don't realize that girls' sexuality or sexual health doesn't only exist for others' consumption/satisfaction.

I want nothing to do with this absolute bullshite. They don't own me or other gals so they can f%ck right off. Like I don't plan on anything ever, but learning is necessary regardless because, surprise, EVEN IF YOU NEVER HAVE SEX stuff can still happen and it's just a good idea to know about your /own friggin body/. And it's so frustrating when they just never tell you things and you find out on your own after the fact. Or if you DO want children and all that, it's never talked about so you grow up learning nothing except what you can glean from overhearing kids at school-if you're not homeschooled-or if you can sneak on a computer or read a book with some scene in it without getting caught, and it almost feels its FORBIDDEN to learn about anything-all the godsd$mned way until you're engaged. Similar to what Pig mentioned here, the “panda pics” things did initially come off to me as weird and I thought the way it was phrased made it seem odd, but, naturally, that was quickly debunked by the fact that Mei was the equivalent of a big furry mascot. Mei suddenly is cool and popular, and the kids at school love it. They seem to accept her because she has something that is unique, the way her friends did, or the girls from the PE class. She’s using her newfound popularity (literally transforming into a panda) to make friends and sell merch. This was such a wholesome and great movie, and it's been so annoying to see people sexualizing the movie like this. You know, the movie of a girl getting so depressed that she goes emotionally numb and tries to run away from home because the pressure of maintaining the image of happiness is too overwhelming for her. Don't get me wrong, I love both! As someone who's had depression since I was a kid, I really related to Inside Out. But I also related to Turning Red. I was a cringe teenager who drew stupid art and wrote fanfiction on online forums while feeling the pressure from my parents to be a perfect daughter. As much as people associate Turning Red to periods-- it's not. It's more dealing with the mental space of no longer being a kid but not quite being an adult. It's a power fantasy of feeling like you don't recognize who you are any more and coming to grips to what you really want to be as opposed to repressing your true self. She literally hulks out, which what teenager hasn't wished they could do that? The only difference is is that she turns into a large, cute red panda-- which can also be its own metaphor of wanting to be intimidating in moments of rage or stress when the world sees you as small and unassuming/nonthreatening. But sure, call the movie about being true to yourself inappropriate for kids before flipping on a movie where we get to watch a physical embodiment of childhood whimsy die real time.

Sounds like a movie that I'd show my children if they were the right age. Sexualizing periods has always boggled my mind. They're just a part of life from puberty onwards. We don't sexualize boys for starting to grow beard hair. And taking the metaphor as far as people have is really reaching hard! I seriously doubt the writers had any ill intent or that any young person watching it will get the wrong idea. Also, I'm all for periods losing their weird unnecessary stigma so that we can finally drop the weird covert act where we have to pretend like we're not in excruciating pain once a month because that would lead to questions; so we can stop hoping that the teachers/ work colleagues who are covering for us won't ask further questions when we have to use the washroom more often/ during inconvenient times; so we can speak up more easily, without the internalized shame, against PMS being treated as a joke or as an excuse to disregard us once a month (even though men have hormonal shifts too, albeit with no regularity). It probably won't happen, but it would be nice to work towards it. This turned into an unintended rant. Anyways, this movie sounds like a thoughtfully written, appropriate teen movie and I see zero issues as a parent.

When I was a teenager, the coming of age movie was 'Teen Wolf', he sold merch, he was taking pictures, he was at parties, he was all over the place. Everyone loved it. Do a version for a girl teenager, and those same groups of people lose their minds and scream the movie is evil. Talk about double standards. I love this movie. I had watched, the next day was out shopping, hearing a mother and her two daughters singing that song, and joined in. It was awesome. Women need more movies like this, so do men, so we can see how much we have in common. Yes, the ending was a quick wrap up, all movies like these have that. Not even phased by it.
@rightinthecrack

I actually never realized that, but it makes so much sense. Scott turning into a werewolf was basically puberty (or “manhood”) for him, and I believe his father said that it was natural and basically inevitable, and learn to accept himself. I think I also remember his dad telling him that he has to learn to control “the wolf” and not let it control him. It also makes sense about the boost of self-confidence, the amount of hair growth, the increase in aggression, him at first feeling like a “freak” even though his dad reassured him it’s normal, him starting to do things impulsively, only using his “wolf” side to be accepted by his peers, and etc. Can’t believe it took me this long to think about it.

I think another issue with people complaining about the panda exclusively being a metaphors for sex or puberty or whatever is that, at least in my opinion, it's much more complicated than that. The panda isn't a coming of age thing for the family, it's part of their history and culture. As someone who grew up outside of my birth country, I've always kind of felt as though my culture is on display especially when I was a kid, and the main character is doing what a lot of non-white kids or children of immigrant families do: show off their culture once it becomes cool.

One of the reasons that guys (boys and men) are so angry about this is because not only is it not about them, but the males are sex symbols. There is no "manly man" character for them to relate to, save the day, save the girl, etc. With the boy band, the boys are very definitely ONLY sex symbols. The guys who are engaged about this are the same men who are afraid of gay guys because they don't want to be on the receiving end of the subjectification that they have towards women. Also, the father's character is nurturing. He cooks, he isn't The Man of the House and he sympathizes with his child and is more understanding than the mother. Also upsetting to men who think men should not have feelings and do "women's work." The part about suppressing the panda is all about how girls are supposed to repress their feelings, suppress their sexuality. All of the women in that line are taught to repress these emotions, and never to express that part of themselves. And of course the thought that a woman can completely express herself and her sexuality is threatening to men who want to be the only ones who can have temper tantrums and be big and scary. The girls in this movie are not sexualized in any way. They don't deal with all the changes that accompany burgeoning womanhood. It's not about that. It's about that time when tween girls are beaten down and condemned for being attracted to whoever they find attractive. There are so many problems with sex and sexuality and in particular female sexuality, there is a lot to unpack, but the failure of our society not recognizing that girls, and women, have these feelings too. What will happen if girls start to actually like sex? How can we continue to make women the only ones responsible for pregnancy if we recognize that women have passions just like men do >>> and they're THE SAME! Oh no. The women are the ones who are always supposed to say no. And the men? "Boys will be boys." What if a man isn't driven and controlled by his penis? Can't have that. Boys might have feelings? That can be addressed in a different movie. Because it's not about men and their problems and they don't acknowledge these issues AT ALL and THAT is insulting to those men because there isn't even a nod to them and their issues. Welcome to our world.

This movie did so much stuff right. The period sequence was hilariously close to home. The panic and confusion was so relatable, and the box of period supplies is just. So accurate. I loved that scene. Not to mention the whole storyline is rooted in fandom. Mei is directly in a fandom, she’s a huge fangirl for the boy band of the era. Having been that thirteen year old girl going through life and being in fandom, participating in that world feels like a secret. Mei’s need to hide her love of the band and the music because her parents would hate it or disapprove… that’s such a genuine, real story from someone in that situation. It’s so true. Girls who participate in fandom, especially at a young age, aren’t normally comfortable revealing that passion to the world. It’s considered cringe, it’s frowned upon, it’s something to indulge in only in secret, online, where no one can see it. Turning Red is one of the most honest depictions of a young girl’s life, it’s kinda sad that so many people seem to hate it. Also the final song, where the boy band and ritual music mix? She learns to love herself regardless of her change in emotional and physical appearance, and eventually embraces the change. The Panda is a reference for everything puberty stands for, people just mostly think of periods when they think female puberty. But it's way more than that and I think that's what the movie shows.

It’s just a coincidence that women who are going through menopause and teenagers go through a similar amount of stress because the family unit is changing at those stages. The children are stressed because they are finding themselves and becoming more independent. Adults are stressed because they’re losing their kids and desperately trying to create boundaries and sever their child’s connections to other people to control them. It even effects how boys view periods, they tend to shame it a lot or make harsh jokes in young teenhood. This hiding and stigma causes a real domino effect, now we’re left with adult guys raging and getting embarrassed about things they don’t even have to worry about, they rage about others even mentioning it (obviously not all men before y’all come at me lol) When I got mine at age 9, I definitely wasn’t a mature adult, so stop making it into such an adult mature and shunned topic, I had the consequences of it and I hope the next youngins won’t have to

I agree. Whole heartily. I was fortunate enough to have a mother who was very opened about it. She never kept it a secret. And when I was 8, when I understood basic biology. My mom really sat me down and talked about it. She wasn't sure when it would happen for me, but she heard some girls got it at 8, so she wanted to be cautious and told me everything I need to know. I admit it was awkward, but my mom wanted me to not be scared when it happens. And she was right, when it happened when I was 12. I knew what it was immediately. I went to her and she had a small bag with all the stuff I needed. Even though my mom was prepared and was preparing me for it. When it came, it was funny how much she fussed about it, panicking slightly, making sure I was equipped with all I needed. Like preparing hot water with a little brown sugar and pack extra, in case. But thinking on it now, I can't help but appreciate it. My experience wasn't scary, because I knew what was happening. And my mom was very open about hers, and so I had some idea what to expect. So yes, I agree it is something that should be talked about to children, especially when they are nearing that age. It is so they won't be afraid. I still don't understand why it is such a taboo to talk about it to children. They are, eventually, going to have to go through the process and experience. They can't be sheltered forever, nor should they be.

As someone who is first generation Asian American and was 13-years-old in 2002, I really related to this film. I also drew cartoon "manga-ish" fan fiction and created SIMS characters and scenarios that resembled my peers (e.g., my crush) and myself in Middle School. It was a way to reflect and better understand my perception of my social world and experiment with my identity and personality at a time that was confusing. The Daisy Mart Scene was mortifying...I can only imagine the embarrassment if my peers had ever seen my manga fan fiction and SIMS creations.

I have a friend who’s young step daughter struggles with very big emotions and outbursts and losing control. They took her to see this movie and said that it really resonated a lot with her, everyone was very happy with the experience and found it a helpful tool. Honestly, the period part is good to be in the movie, because the more it’s normalized and accepted, the less pressure it puts on young girls who have to navigate that body change and try to hide it from society/kids at school. Takes away the ammo from people who would try to bully them, if it’s so accepted and known that it wouldn’t get such a reaction. Take away the taboo. Let them focus on the important things instead of hiding their periods from the world.

But a lot of media I grew up with addressed the gross weirdness of teenage boys and told me it was normal. It may be mentioned in a sitcom, but not often and usually it’s written by a dude to make a joke about “hormonal women” etc. Verses something actually for tween girls either going through it or about to go through it. Sex ed doesn’t talk about periods, either-often just STDs and broad strokes pregnancy to scare girls into abstinence. But not something that’s more Health than Sexual Health. And male puberty gets A LOT of media to the point it’s practically it’s own subgenre in coming of age stories (which are still predominantly about (white) boys, not girls (certainly not chinese disaspora ones or any other woc). Boys dreading Voice Changes. Boys wanting facial hair and armpit hair because it’s Manly (Ed Edd and Eddy literally had them glue carpet to their pits to fake puberty over a decade ago). Lost count of how many Boys’ Coming Of Age or Family Movies With Brothers had them pasting life size supermodel posters above their beds, or sneaking playboy magazines to their buddies. …yet everyone is LE GASP!! SHOCKED!!! That MeiMei doodled a crush kissing and cuddling her or as a shirtless merman, and that Turning Red said “Red Peony” and showed a package of clean pads onscreen. Both of these are NORMAL. It talked about how sometimes tradition can be harmful, talked about adolescence and the struggle of dealing with hormones and such, it talked about how even people who only have your best interest in mind can still do harmful things, and yes.. There was symbolism for periods and even menopause too. If you're a child who hasn't gotten your period yet, you're probably more likely to see all those other messages, especially if they relate to you, than you are about the period message. This movie can show you how NOT to handle your kids (not the period part). You have to let your kids make their own mistakes but just be there for them after to help them through it and how to make better decisions. And, for the love of god, my 6 year old boy knows that “mommy has a period every month, because mommy’s not making babies” and he goes “oh, ok 👍 “ my older daughter said “oh, did it die?” Lol. I just want to say something to address people thinking Mei and her friends making money off of the panda is something sexual. Yes, the movie is about Mei growing up and becoming the panda *at first* symbolizes getting her period. But by the end of the movie it’s pretty obvious that the panda itself is not a metaphor for having a period or sexuality, it’s Mei’s true self, her real personality shining through the mask she has to put on to be her mother’s perfect little girl. That’s why all the other woman in Mei’s family have their pandas sealed away, they have let go of who they truly are and hidden it away so they can live up to the standards their mothers have for them. Which is why it’s so important that Mei makes the decision to keep hers instead of sealing it away. And I’ve heard from some Chinese (and other Asian) viewers that the panda may even symbolize cultural ties or roles they have experienced growing up with immigrant parents. I can’t speak on that in too much detail since I’m black and not Asian, but still, I think that’s a factor a lot of white viewers are not going to notice because they didn’t grow up with those same experiences most people of color do. So no, there is nothing sexual about Mei and her friends making money by taking pictures and selling Merch of Mei in her panda form. You guys are just weird

Lmao, you don't have to be Asian/ specifically not white to notice that Mei's parents have high generational expectations of her. It is common in any culture that you honor your parents sacrifices to get you where you are. Of course its more prevalent in families that recently immigrated/1st 2nd 3rd gen immigrants, that you work extra hard to keep what they sacrificed so much for, but anyone and everyone can in some way relate to that, not just 1 era of 1 culture. Idk, just don't turn off that part of conversation just because you've been told that, as a [race] person, your voice doesn't matter/ or that you're too inferior to possibly understand basic concepts and emotions. But otherwise, yeah i 100% agree with ya Mei having fun unapologetically as her panda self is not sexual in any way. This movie is really important. The power imbalance between Asian mothers and their children, particularly their daughters is something that can cause so much emotional damage and strain in someone's life. The feeling of having to measure up to the standards of someone who gives you so much love but also seems so distanced from who you truly are is pain. My mom and my grandma had a relationship like Mei Mei and her mom, and I had a relationship like this with my mom too. Maybe the generations of red pandas have to do with this harmful expectation that Asain mothers give their daughters that has seemed to last without question for generations. Maybe this is a reach, but the movie spoke to me in this way. It's important for the next generations of asain mothers to stop this cycle, and to learn how to raise their children in the way that they may have wished their mother raised them. It seems hypocritical that a mother can say that they want to protect you and avoid what happened in her relationship with her mom, but also don't take the time to let their children speak for themselves like you might have wanted to do. About the "finally speaking up and telling your parents what you want" part, that's a bit difficult for some kids. If you are a very open parent, then I am glad that you are actually kind to consider this for your kid. If not, then the kid doesn't even know that saying such thing to their parents is an option. Sometimes, it's not even about finding the courage to tell your parents. It's more like, and this is the more toxic side of it, will they even consider my side when they're both overprotective and think that I don't know anything because I'm still just a kid.

I had a confrontation with my mother when I was 19. She found a picture where I drew her as a big monster. She didn't ask why I thought this of her, but I told her. She was furious I held grudges and was under the impression I need to forgive her all bad things she had ever done. There were no apologies from either side, but she did threaten to stop supporting me financially. I'd be marooned abroad with 0 life experience in a country where I didn't have right to work. I had no one and would have been dead within months. And this is the story of how confronting my mother could have led to my death, but I was too young to even realise it at the time. The "Healed family" is a cute trope, but let's be honest. If children were to stand up like Mei did, they'd get anihilated.

@@user-tq1xt2ct8s I agree. Your best option is to flee when you're the child. I ran away at 18. Both my parents were blacklisted so my father wanted to use me as a second chance at getting loans once I turned 18. Negligent father with an inferiority complex, angry stressed out mom who had to be the breadwinner, the typical trope. I walked on eggshells throughout those years and the lies I crafted had only become more and more intricate to avoid beatings and insults. High school was my only source of happiness. The resentment I harbor for my mother and the absolute disgust I felt towards my father still hasn't subsided. If anything, now that I'm done with college (graduating this year) and have a good source of income, my fear of them has only evolved into hatred. I'm now in my mid-twenties and I don't see myself reconciling with them anytime soon. I'm honestly better off without them.

Do the people saying that selling pictures as the panda = selling nudes also think that when the aunties transformed into pandas at the stadium, they're literally like... flashing everyone or something? Or that when Mei uses the panda to jump around and get inside the stadium she's... I rather not even think about that one. Like, there's probably a metaphor on *some* level there between the panda and periods, but it isn't THAT literal lmao. At the end of the day it's still a movie about magic red pandas and she was selling merch of... just that. Mei literally explains the point of the movie PSA style at the end, saying how (possibly paraphrasing) "everyone has a weird, loud, messy side of them. I let it out, how about you?" Like... this is clearly about growing up and learning to accept and express your "cringe" side. This would make the "selling the panda" montage similar to selling covers of boy band songs, or Naruto fanart, or... something else. I don't know. For some reason, I feel like there might be a really good example of a "cringe" interest involving animals that can easily be used to sell art and accessories, but I guess I just can't think of anything. Oh well. And I've also gotta mention, people really need to stop using "relatability" as a metric to determine how good movies, and media in general, are. You don't need to relate to someone's experiences in order to sympathize with them. Anyone who isn't white, cis, straight, male, abled, and neurotypical, can attest to that, seeing as the majority of main characters are somehow ALL of those things and yet people who aren't ANY of those things still enjoy those characters just fine. Heck, my favorite movie is Kung Fu Panda, but I'm not a big fat panda who wants to learn kung fu. That example is childish, but so is only liking characters who are like you.
