If I'm not mistaken, I believe there was an official word that said the fog was left as is because that was how it was designed; that if you remove the fog you see lots of bad geometry and other level design tricks that the fog is intended to hide.

Yeah you're right dude it worked for two reasons, the shirt draw distance kept the game running smoothly and also hid lots of the world that was unfinished.

It's kind of grown on me over the years, there's just something about it. It was meant to hide limitations, but it adds to the game in a way for me.

The reason for the price is due to the royalties with the Turok license, such as the comic. And for Night Dive to make back any money for this release at all. The developers had no say on the price tag.

I think those are in good hands: the first images of System Shock Remake are amazing, and a lot of Otherside Entertainment developers were on the original System Shock (and System Shock 2) team, so... I can see a bright future in front of us :D

To make the platforming easy-peasy, turn the in-game map on. Aside from a few areas late-game, every platform will appear on your map overlay making it basically foolproof to line up and nail every jump.

What can I say? The perfect review and so damn spot on, it is a bit creepy. Turok is still a damn fun game and just listen to that pushing tribal soundtrack while slaughtering savages, shamans, mechs and dinosaurs never gets old. Just played the emu a few weeks back and it still kicks ass like the other classics of that time. Having watched the release steam by GOG on twitch yesterday, all the aspects mentioned are valid and were part of the interview with the developer alongside. The checkpoint or autosave function was also part of it and I must admit, we really are spoiled today. Also, shooting MORE soldiers to the face with the alien gun, watching them fly through the air by the detonation after the weaker impact, is nothing short of satisfying. Such perfect impact in the literal sense simply never gets old. I can't await to see how they turn Turk 2 into a game that doesn't suffer from fps drops left and right, they did a perfect job on this one. However, there is more than just the graphical improvement on the technical side, some sections have significant improvements making them a lot more interesting. For one, they replaced long canyon passages with more interesting things such as ruins, temples and the like and they removed these boring and lenghty passages that were pointless, for instance in the catacombs level. Praise heavens! Then again, the fog really adds to the overall atmosphere and really doesn't feel like a limitation at all. Oh, if you should have bought it on GOG and you should crash on falling down long distances, disable the galaxy thingy and launch it directly. The dev mentioned they are aware of it and already uploaded another built without galaxy support, so that should already be fixed. I agree with the price tag being a bit steep, but then again we saved so much on the bullshit Triple-A we got served this year and the next sale is soon to come as well, so... patience is a virtue.

+Bunker Knacker I never really experienced frame drops. Quite the passionate, at times it played too fast when the frame rate hit over 60. What bothered me the most, is the struggle to get music on Turok 2. Hopefully that will be fixed. Also, can we use Nglide with the remaster of Turok 1?

AirCooledMan2006 As a dinosaur geek, I didn't really care. The dinosaurs were so badly modeled that it didn't "count" if you know what I mean. Like they didn't even try. If they actually tried to get it right and then fail I would be pissed, but they didn't so I take the dinos mostly as monsters to shoot.

I've got the N64 version and one of the most unique things about it aside from the game, you get a mini comic book that details a bit of backstory of not Tal-set, the original Turok, but that of Joshua Fireseed, being included inside the manual. Man, good times!!!

I think the checkpoints, save points, lives & autosaves are part of the individual appeal of this game; it's an FPS with a lot of the design decisions of a classic 80s and early to mid 90s console game.

It really only updates what needs to be updated. So you don't think that the fog in front of you didn't need to be remove and the option to see things really far instead of in your face with fog didn't need to be updated? You are an easy person to pleased.
@RetroRupp
@RetroRupp 7 лет назад
furrynick I think they moved the fog out plenty far enough. I wouldn't want it to be completely gone because I think it adds to the atmosphere of the jungle setting. Besides, people will probably end up modding it anyway. I agree that I would like the option to remove it, as well as add some HD textures, but I don't find it completely necessary.

Oh man, major nostalgia trip seeing Turok 1 again. I remember picking that game up not long after the N64 released back in the mid 90s and I loved it. It's nice to see it get 'remaster' treatment, though I wish it'd get a console release too. Except for Ark and Primal Carnage, there's essentially no dinosaur fps games on consoles, especially ones that are single player focused. Great review Gggmanlives!

A friend of mine an myself played Turok1 on PC in the 2guysOn1pc coop mode and managed to finish it, on, i believe, medium difficulty. He was doing all the mouse work and i was responsible for most of the keyboard inputs. This mode of shared and highly coordinated work made the game ridiculously mind numbing difficult, but also a great fun bonding experience. That's the kind of thing one can only really be doing when being young and obsessive. Good times.

Tenzing Khedup Not much with the original PC version aside from higher resoultion textures (the N64's texture budget was 32x32 bitmaps; I do believe the PC version's were twice that); it was probably just easier to rip assets from versus having to freaking reverse compile the ROM and shift through the files to get the low-rez textures and models from that version. The first PC version also had a 38FPS cap on it, mouse accel up the wazoo and no support for widescreen resolutions (even with nGlide, it's still rendered in a 4:3 aspect ratio).

The fog is what made this game cool. I'm glad they didn't remove it. Look at the GTA San Andreas remaster, they removed the fog and it was a big mistake. The fog in Turok was not only useful for the devs, it was appropriate for the game's setting because it was a mysterious world. The fog contributed a lot to the atmosphere.

There is a command that disables fog completely, however, the reason they added fog is because you could see another area of the map, you WEREN'T supposed to see, for example, the "hub area" would have been visible from any map if you were to disable fog.

At the time it was probably the only console game to beat any PC game to have that high number of weapons. Also this game even if not first have alternate ammo for a few of them like the bow and the shotguns. Yeah because this game have 2 shotguns (pump action and full auto) Also it was one of the very few ones to get an assault rifle and a minigun with a delayed fire. Also its weapons were fairly creative and wanted to show people this FPS have some BALLS I mean you can carry all that arsenal and kick so many ass with it. We have a knife who is surprisingly good if you compare to most FPS melee weapons of that era. A bow with two ammo types Three bullet weapons with pistol, assault rifle and minigun Two shotguns Three energy weapons consisting of a plasma rifle, particle accelerator and alien weapon (the two later one are probably the most novel of the bunch) Two explosive weapons with a grenade launcher and a rocket launcher that launches 4 rockets at once. Then the two ultimate guns with the fusion cannon and chronoscepter which are more or less nuke cannons. Also one detail is that we can get mortal wound masks and backpack as a character upgrade, however the backpack is lost if we loose a life and the backpack allows to carry more grenades shells and bullets from the AR, Pistol, shotguns and grenade launcher which helps a lot. One other thing is that enemy animations was great and the gore was quite funny with gallons of blood at times. I love to see grunts with their eye bleeding before collapsing and having actual dinosaurs to kill. None of the sequels had that part right ... And even if the 2008 version had some raptors, it was a major let down.

As you can tell by my username, Turok has had a big impact on my life. I actually own the N64 copy, original windows copy, and this remaster as well. They all have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, but I can tell that this remaster is just amazing. The music is so good, but I won't lie that I turn it off and play the Mad Max Fury Road soundtrack via Spotify in the background (it adds an amazing feeling to the game). This remaster is definitely something for those who want quick, epic, challenging, and creative gameplay with modern swing. Turok is a prime example of what shooters are capable of, even with older technology. Its a shame though that modern shooters focus more on displaying their technology rather than putting it to use (not that there's really anything wrong with that if done correctly). If more modern games follow Turok's design style, and with their modern technologies, I believe we could have some really interesting games. Still is a shame that the reboot series was shot down though. The sequel to the 2008 reboot looked very promising. Hopefully this remaster will revitalize the audience.

I'm not sure if you missed it or it was added in an update, but I recently bought this and started playing it. You can actually set the draw distance to high and there's no fog at all. You can see pretty much everything in the area.

Gotta love Night Dive Studios. Gggmanlives, do you have any plans to review the other Turok titles? Night Dive is bringing Turok 2 to PC early 2016, but there's four (three if you don't count the 2008 reboot) other entries in the series after 2.

the checkpoint/savesystem with the extralife system and pickups is something, quite a challenge, that I often miss in pc shooters. It is cruel and hard, but so much more rewarding in the long run, you plan thinks out more, that gets me deeper in the game. I wish there would be more shooters with that kind of system. But its either quicksave or checkpoints and regenerating health.

There is an option to push the fog back way further than what you have it. Also, there is a map option.

I remember being real young kid when Nintendo mag had a run up to the launch of the N64 and was touting next gen games like Turok and Goldeneye circa Nov 96 . Lol the memories.

So I am a huge FPS fan, even to the point I have a separate console full of old FPS shooters, after watching many reviews on how turok was well received and how I also played it much younger on the N64 I feel that someone should pick up the license, probably ID if I could feel confident about it, and make a reboot series such as the did with Doom and wolfenstein. I dont want no fancy story, no online multiplayer, NO microtransactions, just a game with all its original guns updated and some new mechanics and bring this game back from the dead. Please, let this be a reality

I got this game for free because one of my friends had the humble bundle and didn't want it. Safe to say that it is possibly one of the coolest games I've been playing from the past in a long time.

Loved that game... i always played it on my mothers computer because she was the only one who had a 3d acceleration card. Maybe i still have the disc laying around somewhere...

I think this was one of the first speed-runable games back then. I always loved how it really was just a "arcade" style shooter.

I'm glad to see this was re-released. I'd like to revisit it again and see if I can actually make it all the way through the game. I remember it, like the sequel, was confusing as hell and it was easy to get lost and lose interest. I'll probably grab it whenever it drops considerably on a sale, I do think $20 is a bit steep (considering I can just run out and get an original N64 copy for about five dollars).

Some things in the Levels have been shuffled around, appearently. I discovered that the location where you can find the hidden Auto-Shotgun in the first Level has been changed.

I am honestly so upset. I just found out that the first two are actually on Steam...I can not believe my eyes. But why! Why is the first one for Mac and not Seeds of Evil!! Can someone please tell me this will change? It seems erroneous for the second one to not be for Mac where the first one is!

Your reviews are one of the best even when I might sometimes disagree with them. Man, I'm glad I finally started this game. Rewatching this review a few days ago helped, since I couldn't decide what to play recently. Still only on the first 3 levels, with Level 2 done once (requires repeating for all the keys though as you mentioned) but it's some good fun. It looks like they patched the poor visibility, as a sidenote. I kind of hope they add Turok Evolution as I never finished that. I got a couple of levels in, maybe 6 or 7, but I spent most of the time in local coop fighting friends and dinos alike. I'd like to see Turok 2008 hitting steam as well, ideally remastered in some way. Would be nice to return to it and re-evaluate my opinion. I really liked it as a mid-teen, so I wonder if I would agree more with your review now.

Finished it. A W E S O M E. I headless-chickened my way through Chapter 8 as a result of "just seeing what the level looks like" and then getting into deep. Went below 20 hp twice, somehow survived to get some armor. The second time I was at ~20hp for quite a bit which is where I started playing more serious as I noticed I made quite good progress (2 save points in). Then made it to the bosses. Finished the Campaigner off with the pistol because he was just a few shots away and I was too lazy to switch after I ran out of ammo on whatever weapon I had equipped before. For those shenanigans, one of my favorite gaming moments of recent times. Thanks for giving me the push to start haha I saw Night Dive Studios mentioned here. Funnily enough, they are also involved with Doom 64. Which I started after Turok. Heh. :) And then there's Turok 2...

I missed the game when it was released so I tried it now. The shooting feels good, graphic is still nice but the key system is broken. It is not really fun to search for keys. Just a typical flaw of 90s map design that often forced you to look for some "well placed" door for an hour. They should have added a map to the keys as an option if you get lost and it would be way better or maybe give a hint something like "you still miss a key in this area".
@jvccr7533
@jvccr7533 3 года назад
@@kkarx I don't mind the key search all too much. Also, the game does tell you where you miss keys. In the Hub, there are stone plates on the ground in front of the portal that light up (1x gun part, rest for keys) and in the middle there are stone formations where it shows you how many keys you collected for each level.
