On this episode we show our aquatic turtle tank setup with land and water. Both of the Red Ear Sliders are in need of a much bigger tank to really accommodate for their gowning size but for now this temporary setup will work. We have a female and male that could both greatly benefit from some dry land and a soak in the natural sun from time to time.
Of course the land is mostly for the female to lay her eggs so to avoid her becoming impacted from not having a place to lay due to them currently being at the mating age of four. Now this was our version of how to give them some land while having the water near so hope you enjoy or creation. This is not the finally home for our turtles as they need closer to 120 gallons or more to be happy. We here at Home Base Family hope you enjoy the video and we'll be sure to keep you updated on the next tank build probably around the corner so till then stay happy and healthy everyone.

He is trying to mate with her. No worries. They were separated shortly after we made this video. They are both very happy and healthy.

I had to seperate my RES male from my 3 other females. I went on a business trip and came back and he had bit her neck all the way down to where you could see her neck muscles. She is fine now it healed nicely and she has minimal scaring. They are still seperated.

I also wanted to say I liked your video and I like the dry land setup only thing I would do differently is take the sand out and have mostly reptisoil.

Don't really understand what's funny about the agression. These two really need to be seperated asap. Other than that, great nesting/basking idea. Thanks for sharing it.

This is beyond a great idea!! Just wanted to let you know it's better to give their food just in the water. They are unable to swallow without water. Yeah they might grab a piece and take it but it's much better to just give in the water. Awesome work

Hey I’ve been wanting to make something like this for a while now. I have one turtle and she only has a ten gallon tank. One of my buddies said that he would give me another ten gallon so I can do this and I accepted the offer so fast. The moral of the story is that I really liked the design on how you made it. So I wanted to make my own. Thank you for giving me the idea and I hope y’all have a nice day.

Nice! How regular did you do water change and want did you put inside your FX 4? I have 2 terrapins similar size as yours in a 4 FT tank running FX6. I have to do a water change every 2 weeks or so as the water turns yellowish green with lots of particles in the water.
@homebasefamily
@homebasefamily 3 года назад
We change water about once a month if even that. Nothing special in the fx4 that I know of. Maybe a bag of carbon that I used from their original filter to help jump start the water for beneficial bacteria. Question for you...Does your tank have a piece of dift wood or a object causing the water to change yellowish?
@andrew71888

You must have the incorrect media within your trays. I do maintenence on my FX6 every 5 months and it's on an 150 gallon outdoor pond.

@homebasefamily
@homebasefamily Год назад
The ramp for the water side is a creative idea we had for making the transition from wet to dry. It is made of half of a floating dock found at most pet stores for turtles to bask. We attached it to plastic mesh with zip ties so it could pivot or move with the water level. Sorry it's hard to explain how it was made but easier seen.

Not for the dry side of the tank. We did for the water side. Thinking back now we should have washed it to be safe. It was playground sand from our local home improvement store.

@homebasefamily
@homebasefamily 3 года назад
I am no turtle expert or even a person to be asking but from my own personal knowledge of our turtles. They do need a place to completely dry off or bask. Actually land or dirt for laying is for the female turtle. Our male does not seem to like the land or even travel to it but he does still bask under the light right near the waters edge.
@evanwakano6127
@evanwakano6127 3 года назад
Hi! You will need a basking area with a uvb bulb and a heat lamp. They need to completely dry off so they won’t get shell rot and the uvb bulb is to help them get vitamin D and absorb calcium. It’s recreating sunlight

@chickentea7346
@chickentea7346 2 года назад
Yes and it will die fast not even saying the turtlea will hurt it, tortoise can't swim water deeper then them and they will drown look at their legs, they don't have webbed feet cuz it is a land animal but red eared slider turtle like this one, they have webbed feet and must live at least 70 Percentage of water
@mauiboy96768

@@chickentea7346 i think you got the wrong message.. i meant a dry aquarium like this one, but instead of water, it’s land, with turtle dirt, like the one you can buy at the pet store. I was wondering if there’s enough oxygen for them to live in there.

You need to trim his nails
@ashlynnmarie6556
@ashlynnmarie6556 2 года назад
Your not supposed to trim them.. they are also more a solo pet as you can tell the male is being aggressive and will end up killing the female. So when mating it’s kinda a 50/50 chance one or the other will survive do to captivity.. I’m no expert but learned this by joining a lot of Facebook groups for RES and Aquatic turtle groups. Join them and see for your self
@ashlynnmarie6556
@ashlynnmarie6556 2 года назад
@@m0j0101 actually males nails are longer not female your correct it’s used for digging but they mostly use their back legs to dig. Males have longer nails because it’s to show off the dance better also known as mating dance which is also aggression.. like I said in a previous comment I learned at by join these Facebook groups and always thought what y’all are thinking I currently have 1 turtle but have 5 in the family that I all raised as little babies
