hey turtle girl I was in the same situation as you when i tried to put a screen cover over my tank but the filter got in the way. So I cut a piece out of the metal sides with a jack saw and then used scissors to cut the rest of the wiring to get a perfect fit, so that i could have a lid that fit the tank but didn't interfere with the filter. It works like a charm and its very easy to take off.
I set up my 40 gallon tank last year for around 150 dollars. Tank:56$ Filter:50$ Egg crate:20 Heater:25$ Lighting:20 I also bought everything from petco and petsmart
Hiii I am Marie and I just want to thank you I got all the information I need for my turtle from you i love watching your videos please keep up the good work my turtle is happy and I am getting him a bigger tank for my birthday cause I found out I need a bigger tank thank you 😊
Solid advice on shopping. I was at a chain store in a far-away town yesterday. I mentioned I had special requirements for Rufus (my snapping turtle) to the cashier. She looked up on her cash register at their website and gave me all the web discounts on everything I was buying. I paid half on everything. I went everywhere and couldn’t find a shallow tank. I’m looking for a clear, plastic or acrylic, shallow, ten gallon tub. Rufus is a year old, and he pushes around his ceramic pot cave, and large rocks in his current tub. The ceramic cave weighs more than 6 times his weight. I am sure he would break a glass tank moving everything around all the time. I have several tubs that will work, but Rufus watches my Ipad through the tub. So he would enjoy a clearer view. Knucklehead just snapped at a large rock. I guess its feeding time with the long tweezers.
Tube lights are great and much more effective than the compact bulbs! Arcadia is the best brand! Make sure to get a Solarmeter 6.5 to check and make sure UVI levels are accurate! I use a T5 HO Arcadia 6% bulb and fixture for my UVB for my turtle!
Someone stupidly released their turtle into THE LITERAL DESERT behind my house. My dog(who’s a hunting dog) found him, and he was wildly confused by this animal😂. I have no idea what I’m doing since I only know how to care for a sulcate tortoise, but your vids are helping SO MUCH. Thank you 🙏
I love your channel and yours was the first I found before I bought my razor back musk turtle, Fanny. Your link to by sinking turtle pellet food was priceless and so handy for Musks in general. Thanks again for your passion and hard work.
What type of water do you use to fill the tank with and rinse the sand with? Do you use tap and then condition it? How much do you condition the water? I am planning to get a red eared slider soon, I’m getting a 50 tank from my family friend soon. So I’ve been trying to find topics on this. Thanks! Love you’re turtles. 🥰🥰
Thank you for making such fun videos for us! You’re such an inspiration and I would love to start a channel like yours one day about my pets! Your musk turtle is so adorable though and I vote for his name to be Elon the musk turtle!
Maahahaha now I am a turtle master too🖤. If you ever want to find some tempor proof glass that fits almost perfectly on top of a aquarium look for old refrigerators 🙂
I’m hoping to get a musk turtle soon this video helped a lot. I have most of the supplies already I just need a tank! Update on the tank decorations you add pls

Where'd ya get the "table/shelf" for the tank! Also, looking to get a new tank for my 8 inch red eared slider! Any tips of where I can purchase one please!
@@TheTurtleGirl speaking getting a second leopard gecko my sister wanted another one but doesn't know if she can put hers with the new one she has a male and since we r getting mixed opinions from looking it up I was wondering if you. Could help on that
@@TheTurtleGirl Thank you so much for your reply. Right on so that explains your name i like it. Keep up on your videos myself and im sure thousands of others enjoy and learn something new from each video .
Omg, thank you so much for all the info!! I actually started watching your videos 1 month ago and I’ve been learning a lot, thanks 2 you I can finally get my own pet turtle! And I was thinking of the name “Kiwi” tell me your opinion on this name!! ❤️🐢
Hi, I recently set up a 40 breeder for my musk turtle. I just got a 75 and want to move everything over to it. Can I just transfer the sand from the 40 over to the 75? It's pretty clean. Really no need to re rinse is there? I know I will still need probably another 20lbs bag to go with it in the 75. Thanks.
Thanks for all the great videos! I'm fairly new to owning a turtle and your videos have helped a ton! I'd be totally lost without you lol. Any tips on how to keep your turtle entertained? I have a red eared slider (named fletcher) and he seems bored a lot of the time. But maybe that's just his personality?
hey! i’m not sure if you still have the turtle. but, just put some plants in ur tank. i recommend a brush with suction cups, if you look up “turtle brush in tank” on google you’ll see what i mean. i personally have rocks at the bottom of my tank, and my turtle loves to hunt between them and it entertains him. u could also get like 3 live minnows for him to chase.
Just got a turtle and currently working on a tank. I want to thank you for the amazing video as it now feels way easier to build a tank starting from scratch! I wanted to ask if the water you're using is "cleaned" with some chemical (like, dechlorination process etc.) or is just regular tap water. Sorry for the possible bad wording, I'm Italian and English is not my first language!!
Hi turtle girl,so I just bought a red eared slider and wanted to know when and how long do I need to have the filter and lamp lights on?Its about an inch small
Thanks for the help setting up! I am a classroom teacher and was gifted a painted turtle and supplies! I’m more of a fish Person and usually I cycle the tanks before hand. Is this not required for turtles? Also I saw that your turtle was not in the tank in the beginning. Did you house him in with a wet paper towel? I’m just thinking of transport! Thanks again for the help!
Late to this video but very helpful. I just got an African slider and I set up a 40 gallon this way. He won’t come out to bask. Had him for two days. Was going to pull him out ask bask him in a box. What’s your opinion on why he won’t bask.
you're videos are so helpful! I have pages of notes for my red eared! can't wait to get everything going right and for him to live his best life!! *Question!* When moving what is the best way of transporting? How does it affect the turtle?
Sorry but I must speak out some critique about the set up because there are a few things done wrong and some are missing. 1.The basking spot is laying in the water which is not good at all because the turtle can and will grow algae on it's shell...For musk, snapping or mata mata turtles it's acceptable because they do not bask that much and spend most of the time in water but for a turtle kept in captivity it should always be algae free due to the fact it's unknown if the algae that grows inside of a tank is different than the algae that you find in the nature. Also algae is one of the things that can cause illnesses like shell rot for a lot of turtle kinds. So basically they NEED a spot to dry out for sometime and get back into the water. Also depending on the turtle the basking spot needs sand because some females lay unfertilized eggs after they mature. 2. Another thing is that an extra bulb for the warmth at the basking spot is totally unnessesscary because if you get a good UV-lamp it'll do both actually but they'll cost a bit more than the smaller ones that make it difficult to keep the basking spot hot. 3. Check how much water your turtle needs and add multiple ways for them to enter the basking spot because not all turtles are perfect swimmers and rely onto things to climb onto even with the skin inbetween their toes. 4. Add plants even if they get eaten because first off most turtles are carnivores and herbivores so they need like a 50-50 diet to stay healthy and second plants keep the water clean and also help the turtle to hide in areas. 5. Drop sepia bones (sepia bowl) into the water so they always have something they can always chew on something to get calcium to harden their shell out.
What do you think is the best set up for a striped mud slider? I've done tons of research and visited several pet stores and I keep getting conflicting information. So far I've loved and agreed with everything you share. Can you do a video specifically on my kind. BTW, I put a few guppies in with my turtle, he's about 1" at the moment and has been since like September when we found him, and he doesn't seem interested AT ALL with chasing or eating them... I would like fish and dwarf mexican crayfish with him. So I will await your reply before I spend any more money incorrectly. Thanks in advance.
Thank you so much...I have a red eared slider and I'm always worried it's going to drown.....it's 8cm long....can I fill my tank up high like yours ? Or how much should I fill it up? Read somewhere it's around 16cm water depth.....but seems like a lot ....am so clueless.....can you please please help 😊thanks alot 🙏
I have a question about pellet feeding. I have a hatching and he eats most of his pellets but some get stuck at the bottom of the tank. Is this hazardous to them and what is the best way to clean it. I don’t have a net to scoop it just yet. I did order one just waiting for it to come.
Hey so i just got an hatchling Albino Red ear Slider, its about 2 inches and i have it in about 5 or 6 inches of water is that ok? How much decoration should i put? is it one of those situations where less is more?..thank you!
Hi Im done setting up my tank now I’m just trying to figure out the best care for a yearling ouachita map, does a yearling require baby food or growth food?
I'm a first-time Turtle owner I have a hatchling slider I have a 10 gallon tank getting ready to get a 20-gallon because I can tell this is too small I'm not sure how much water to put in I'm seeing conflicting answers. My hatchling is one-and-a-half in and I have three inches of water in the tank should it be higher?
For me, I just put a medium tank with rocks and other minerals I found in a store and some fake plants, a filter the tank came with, a barrel for a dark place they can go in and a color changing light to make it look cool and the sponge bob stickers the tank also contained and to warm up the tank, I just put some really hot water to heat it up, are they living wrong or living great
@@TheTurtleGirl I just added a basking area and thanks for some tips, it’s just that I’m not really a person who goes to places for heaters nor do I try shipping since some of my sisters say I don’t need anything else, and I didn’t believed them and ignored them and I tried ways to get the last things I need, only if I can go to places to get those things 😔
You know these things holding the lamp (I'm not quite sure what its called since English is not my native language) Where can I buy them? I've been looking everywhere! Thanks.
Hey turtle girl! A baby red eared slider fell into my pool a few weeks ago, and there were no nearby water sources habitable for it nearby, so we took it in. I just wanted to see if there was anyway to like, show you the setup we have or something to see if it’s ok, cuz this is our first time with a turtle and he’s very nervous, so I just wanted to make sure that what we have is good Also name the turtle Murdoch Musk
that's a great question...maybe a future video topic! I've found a vinegar and water solution can work well...just be careful to not get the solution into the water...so maybe do it when the water level is lowered because of a water change? a razorblade can also be helpful!
Quick question if you don’t mind. You seem to know a lot about this. I bought a Fluval 370 filter for my eastern painted turtle and she’s in a 55 tank, for now, looking to upgrade the tank. Anyway as far as filter media Fluval sells so many. Do you know the best ones to use? Thanks in advance.
Hi! I’m getting a turtle soon and just started setting up his tank. As far as water is it safe to use sink/hose water or do I need to do something to it?
I need your help again! I have a 7 year old painted back turtle and I never had anything in her tanks other thank a basking area. I decided to put river rocks substrate in the tank and she seemed like she didn’t like it. She was swimming frantically and not bask so I took them out and she’s still not basking. What do I do? How can I help??
is it okay for my turtle if when I set up the tank at first, until I get him a new bigger filter for the new big tank, will he be okay without a filter for a tiny bit? Or should I temporarily put his old, small filter that’s just in the tank?
i personally use a printer stand because i have 2 fish tanks one for fish and one for my cute turtle sunflower and my printer stand has 1 drawer i got it at staples and it was 100 dollars
Hi, turtle girl is so awesome hearing and watching all of your videos because you give out great tips. But I do have a question we just bought a basketing for our turtles is it normal not basketing or will it take time for them to get up there? Another thing what lights will you recommand me to get for our aquaric tank?
