It's grape and olive harvest season in Italy, known in Italian as 'la vendemmia'. I speak with a range of local workmen to understand this historic industry and what the reality is for a small family-run olive oil and wine business. I hope you like this episode from Italy. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

Oliveoil is always present in italian cuisine. It's way healthier than other fat. I don't know if in Italy oliveoil is expensive, but in Portugal (my country) it's a bit expensive, even though we produce a lot. Italy, Portugal and Greece produce a great amount of oliveoil. I think Spain and the south of France, too, but I'm not sure.

The ending brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me of my grandpa's words in Lebanon. Out of all the crops harvested in the fall, the olive season was the most special. They sang songs, laughed, told jokes, ate and made lots of memories. A lot has been lost. What remains is at the mercy of time.

I have yet to bemoan of the past. The one thing I have learned in the life is that the only constant is change. One day, people will look back at this present moment and call it the "good ole days". Many are yearning for this simple life... perhaps it will return with the changes our world is in and a resetting of economies. It reminds me of my Yiayia and Papou who emigrated to Australia in the 20s and 30s and had this sort of olive grove and grape harvest in their Queensland country town. They had such skill, and a little has come down to their grandchildren... the love and passion for the land does not seem to leave the genes... the beauty of life is to till the soil and reap its harvest... why do we need machines when our own hands can accomplish so much beauty if we just apply ourselves to what is best in life... not money... but rather God, love, family and the fruits of the earth.

Wow, such a poignant and sad but moving piece of cinema. Guido seemed to have a heavy heart as he spoke of the competition and lack of authenticity that is happening because the world would rather have convenience and mix oils over culture and true olive oil as it once was. His dad's years of knowledge and love for his productions is so heartwarming and the pride that Guido and his family have for their work and livelihood. I would definitely love to spend a long time and help in this ancient tradition. To hear of how it used to be a social event and honest hard work that was shared by many to now not be that anymore is such a terrible and saddening revelation. I enjoy supporting local people and hope that the traditions that his and his family and others who are true to this line of production continue to get the recognition and credit they deserve. Ahh finally let go the ladder and got my ☕ 😉 Oh, Kylie, why am I sat here with tears on my cheeks over a film about harvests? Just the testimonies, from young Guido to those wonderful octagenarians who have spent a lifetime tending those groves ( and vines ) .... to watch them fading..... it is too much to bear. Maybe I'm feeling it more on this year when so much feels threatened, so much loss....? The thoughts from Guido's mama were so poignant ♥️ Or maybe it's just that you have a unique and precious talent for capturing the Beauty in every moment; and yes, it is difficult not to over sentimentalise the real and hard lives of people ( you never do). The most enduring art places pleasure and pain side by side and challenges, I laughed at the 🍇pickers' jokes, resolved to be more thoughtful in my purchasing of olive oil and wine, and felt my heart soar at the stunning Tuscan landscape. Then watched it all again. Utter joy. So many thanks 📸😘😘

We visited a family that owned an olive grove and were lucky to bring home fresh olive oil, but it was very sad to hear that how hard they were struggling. I can't even imagine how hard it is to work on an olive grove or in a vineyard, and I don't know if it matters, but I appreciate every one who breaks their backs to produce such beautiful foods and drink that are often far too taken for granted. As a student I participated years ago at a ''vendange'' at a small vineyard own by family friends in Provence. There were hired workers and friends and students who all worked together. I remember the lovely meal we all shared at the end. Joyful memories. Kylie, you have a special talent to listen and to capture images of important traditional activities such as the vendemmia and the culture of olive oil. Guido explained so well the difficulties with the commercialization of olive oil in Italy. I always try to purchase oil from local producers rather than from a big company. Farmers and growers have to be encouraged.

Beautifully executed. It speaks the truth and removes some of the romantic perceptions people have about agriculture. Hi Kylie, I am watching your video, and enjoying it. It is great to hear the conversation you’re having with Guido. He speaks beautiful English. He is A DORABLE! When I was in Italy in 2018 with my brother, we were in Montecatini. As we were driving on the highway through Tuscany, we saw numerous, what I thought was abandoned homes and farms, all along the highway. It was very sad to see that. I can’t wait to go back to Italy! I follow Nikki Positano. That was one of my dreams when I went to Italy in 1978, was to go to Positano. It didn’t happen. I’m praying I’ll be able to go there next year. Hey, you two are together a while now, MIGHT he be THE one? 👍😀

This was an incredible documentary of the current status with the olive and grape harvests.-so well photographed and edited, and so much information. It is truly sad to lose this art, this passion for the completion of the year's toils, this simpler and more connected life style. It is currently the way everywhere, the young leaving the country for urban opportunity. I have been observing the slow beginnings of the return to the rural connections, the return to the country and agricultural life. I feel anxious that the farms can be saved before too much connection and tradition slips away. I want to be hopeful that these wonderful farms can be saved. It was interesting to hear that both the grape and olive harvests are now 30 days earlier than years ago. Thank you for an incredible video. It was beautiful.

This is definitely a wake up call for how things are drastically changing in the world. It also made me realize that, we are the vehicle for certain traditions perpetually going forward or not, with our progeny. I am first gen Italian living in 🇨🇦. I can recall, very little, my dad, uncles and nonno making home made wine this time of year, and earlier in September, was sauce making season. It was hard difficult work, but there was so much togetherness, not to mention you learnt great lessons working with your hands and doing physical work. Alas, it’s been years since we made homemade sauce or wine. You’ve inspired me Kylie, something to consider next year when we are hopefully over this pandemic. Un saluto al young Hemingway! 😜😎🙏

Thankyou Kylie that was beautiful to watch. I love Olive groves and vineyards and it seems like the harvests used to be a huge celebration and rewards for their hard work. Just like fruit picking in Australia most of the work is now done by travellers and many locals would not have the stamina or will to do the work for a megr wage. There must be a way or incentives to entice young people back to this work.
