How to replace a power steering rack, outer tie rods, and realign your third gen Toyota 4Runner or Toyota Tacoma.
Parts/Tools Used:
-Cardone 97-1697 New Rack and Pinion (Complete Unit)
-Moog ES3547 and ES3548 outer tie rod ends
-1 Quart Valvoline Dexron ATF
-Dorman 905-401 Steering Rack Bushing Kit (only one bushing needed)
-Ames (HF) 100ft Laser Distance Meter (64001)
-Pittsburgh (HF) Ball Joint Separator (99849)

My pappy didn’t lose his leg in WW2 so I could use METRIC adjustable wrenches! I only use SAE adjustable wrenches. Murica.

your channel gives me PTSD about my youth in the Buffalo area. Every car I ever owned there was just one, chassis-shaped mass of bumpy rust. I've lived in the PacNW for about 30 years - no road-salt, no rust. I thought I had forgotten all about trying to service a Toyota back East, but it all just came flooding back.

Does the slip joint still need to be loose when adjusting the steering wheel? I took off the center nut like you did but the wheel will NOT budge, not even with a hammer

Nope! I’ve had one and only one get that stuck and had to rent a steering wheel puller from advance auto- it’s free.

For some reason I'm anal about torque specs on all nuts and bolts on the vehicle except tire lug nuts. Those I simply tightened with a grunt.

You may want to try again with weight on the wheels. Either way, it’s no substitute for a professional alignment- just temporary.

Extremely disappointed you didn't remove the cotter pin with the adjustable.....for your sake I hope that was a gag, and you didn't waste hours of your life removing everything with the adjustable
