Sorry for delayed video. Had a lot of work to do. This is a small tutorial where I show you how a POV works, how to get it synchronized and how to sue register control to fast switch some LEDs. You will also see how to use a Hall effect switch. All the codes and schematics are below.
This POV display could show both text/numbers or an analog clock.

I think this is the first explanation of how the hall sensor, code and rotational maths all work together to make a POV display work, that actually makes sense! Great way to break down the "magic" of rotational POV displays into a simple example! Steve

Great stuff! Thanks for the inspiration. One addition; my hall sensor did not operate reliably with the 1k ohm pull up resistor, had to replace it with the more often advised 10k ohm pull up resistor to get it working.

That's the most detailed explanation for POV clocks I've found so far, and I can't recommend it enough for people who are trying to understand the "magic" behind POV displays. You just earned a new subscriber :D

I've noticed you worked on the quality of the video, that seems much more professional, good job ! For a clock, is the noise not too disturbing?? That is the only problem of this kind of project using a spinig thing...
@ELECTRONOOBS
@ELECTRONOOBS 6 лет назад
Yes, the noise is VERY disturbing. Any way this is just an example for learning purpose. I guess with a few more days of design and better motors you caould build a very stable and silent propeller. Keep up!

Very nice project and workmanship in construction. I love my glue gun? You could also install a coil with the hall effect sensor. You would need a logic level n-channel mosfet and a couple of gate resistors. An extra Arduino pins is needed to drive the gate of the mosfet. Sort of like an inside-out Bedini school girl pulse motor. The external brushed DC motor and pulley are gone! I managed 2500rpm free-running with mine. I don't know if that's fast enough for POV or if the MCU can cope with the pulses. I don't see why not since Arduinos are used in closed loop servos with 1000 updates per second or more.

I will use a 7200 RPM BLDC motor from a HDD, so I don't need the counter that counts down the rotations. And, since the motor spins at constant 60 rps, it will be rendered 60 times every second. And BLDC motors are synchronous motors, so it makes my life easier.

You should put a coil in the other (non-sensor) end to grab a little bit of recharging power as it passes the magnet... Or, if you make the housing in a disc shape, you could build several coils into the edge to provide recharging power - possibly even eliminate the Arduino battery altogether if you do it right... 😁

Why don't you used a slip ring to supply power on your arduino board, so that you can take out side the battery on that rotating part? With that you can charge the battery without turning off the clock.

Hmmm... What if you used, say a foot long addressable LED strip (like a bit of APA102) the same principle should apply. In theory you should be able to display a full colour picture. Could be a lot of maths though!

from EEVblog (Dave) Your accent is a bit heavy going making him difficult for me understand, I have to watch it a second time, to understand what you are saying. :-) I like the project seems a quite good, it seems to be a clock, What I don't now how you would set the time on it, apart from starting it 12 o'clock? Would it need a quarts crystal think to keep it on the correct time? How about making the rotating movement charge the battery some how, then it could go 24 hours a day, as a real clock :-)
