Scrim jims, butterflys, overheads, 4x4 frames, whatever you want to call them, are a staple on almost every film set or video shoot. They are great at turning any light into a large soft light source; they can be used to even out the light during outdoor shoots; and you can use them, with a dark fabric, as large flags. They’re versatile, they’re sturdy, they have a lot of uses, and by building them ourselves, they’re certainly worth having at least one in your kit. These normally retail for upwards of $150-$200, but we’re going to make our own for around $80.
MATERIALS:
Frame:
1/2"x5' EMT conduit (x4): goo.gl/6TfQUb
1/2" EMT elbows / corners (x4): goo.gl/nPrc1F
Thumbscrews (x4) - I think I used #10 x 1/2"
1/4" x 20 screws (x2)
5/8" spigot / stud adapter (x2): amzn.to/2HNYPCp
**I'd recommend you just buy this pack though: amzn.to/2JQ3LmQ (lots of extra goodies)
Diffusion Panel:
Fabric: goo.gl/tDesCU
Nylon webbing (2" wide): amzn.to/2JQ4c0s
Grommets (3/8"): goo.gl/9Nhm5K
Grommet installation kit / tool: goo.gl/4c3fiM
Cable Ties:
Spring cord locks: amzn.to/2KCq2G9
1/8" elastic cord (x25'): amzn.to/2HXeE68
Video on making your own cable ties: • TUTORIAL: CHEAP DIY ca...
All said and done you should be able to get all the materials above for just under $80. As with all my DIY builds I don't look for the cheapest option, rather I want the best option (durable, reliable, professional, and usable) for the price - if you want to go super frugal just grab some PVC pipe, some fittings, and a white twin bed sheet from WalMart.

Dude I love what you're doing! You've totally carved a niche in a really crowded creator field. Subscribed and excited to see what you'll do next. :) Out of curiosity, for folks who don't have access to a sewing machine, are there any purchasable silks you'd recommend that you think would actually fit in this frame?
@DroiMedia
@DroiMedia 5 лет назад
Thanks! That means a lot ☺ In regards to the silk question..... there is likely nothing as durable that would be as inexpensive, BUT, I think if you handled / treated it well you could fix some elastic bands to the corners of something cut down to 4'x4' (I'm thinking of something like these sheet gripper thingies: amzn.to/2MMQhLH attached to a bed sheet or some silk from the fabric store cut down to the size you want.) Another option would be to find something and mod the dimensions of your frame to fit that. So lets say you have a pillow case or curtain (which would likely be more durable because they won't need to get cut), you could measure that and cut a frame to fit it. Hope that makes sense and maybe provides a bit of a starting point! Also, I've heard that the fabric places will have a list of people who offer sewing services in the area, couldn't hurt to ask - who knows maybe you could have it cut/sewn for fairly cheap. Just another thought! Thanks again and let me know how the DIYing goes!
@DroiMedia
@DroiMedia 5 лет назад
Also, there are some way cheaper options around for those sheet clips: amzn.to/2MH4byD. There are also relatively inexpensive silks out there: www.filmandvideolighting.com/modern-studio-4x4-silk-fabric.html

this is awsome! could you make a thin small version, like matthews scrim kit
@DroiMedia
@DroiMedia 5 лет назад
Thanks! And yeah, you could definitely make a smaller version w/smaller conduit or pipe, but it might not be as strong/durable depending on what quality and size of material you use. I know McMaster Carr sells a bunch of pipe, tubes, and conduit w/various wall thicknesses (I actually buy my 15mm rods from them in like 6-8' lengths and cut as needed) that I think you could use in this same way, and I'm sure they have some sort of connectors. I've seen a few mods on this already where people are attaching a straight connector on each arm so they can make 4' square or 8' square scrims.

Hi Tim! Thanks for the sub and great question - I've noticed NO color changes with the white fabric used in the video (there might be some if you used like a light meter but to the naked eye and on my camera I cannot see any change). I did some minor edits, but no color temp adjustments on my allen wrench organization video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gDArQqojsi8.html in which you can clearly see the scrim in use. I see how you attach the ties to the fabric. But how do you actually attach them to the frame? Do you detach the pipes and slide them through or what?
@DroiMedia
@DroiMedia 4 года назад
heya! So I leave the ties attached through the grommets of the fabric/scrim piece, and then you unhook them, but DON'T take them entirely off the fabric piece, and attach them around the pipes, and then re-connect them. I am realizing it is hard to explain, but the ties should go through the grommet, around the pipe, and then connect / attach to itself to hold everything tight. You can see an example of this near the end at around 6:18, but it's not a shot of it being done, kind of a finished shot. Hope that helps! :)

Getting done on this project. One small snag.. how do you punch a perfect hole through all of those layers of fabric to do the grommets?

Tim! Great question! Your grommet set should have a punch tool, but single or sets of hollow punches are also available at hardware and hobby stores.
