CORRECTION!!! - ( STEP 10) - If the width of the spine is to have 12 rows of holes, there will be 13 spaces so width should be divided by 13 not 12. I actually DID divide mine into 12, but the spaces are so small that it didn't make a difference.

Yea, I noticed that... I was thinking ... does she mean 12 LINES, or 12 SPACES? So, I stopped the clip and counted... Yep, 12 LINES, meaning, 13 SPACES ;) I LOVE that template idea for poking the holes in the spine!!! When you do that first envelope, you suddenly speed up the clip... ARGh!!! I don't know how to do that 'simple three something stitch'. But I found a solution! I played it at 0.25 speed (instead of normal speed) and was able to see what you actually did. ;)

Your voice is calm, you are extremely detailed and you make me feel that I can do it. It's like you said, I always think that other crafters do everything faster than me, but when I listen to you I feel more energetic and confident and ready to start creating. Thank you so much.

I know this is a 2 year old video but I still wanted to comment and say I love this idea! I started making Christmas junk journals but I made the spines so wide. I have a bunch of Christmas stock paper so I think I'm going to do the envelopes in it instead of tea dyed paper. Then I can put in hot chocolate packets, tea, gift cards, thin wrapped candy and the like. Thanks for the ideas! LOVE your channel and your sense of humor. 😉

This is FANTASTIC--what beautiful beautiful books--I cannot wait to make a few. I have to say how much I appreciate your honesty and pointing out things like tools are magic bullets and just how long these things take: "So you don't feel like everyone else can do these things faster than I can"...that's SO true. Most of the vids make it look so easy--we often feel like we should be able to just sit down and whip up one of these projects in a half hour or so. You're always so considerate of your audience and that's terrific 🤗😎

I love that you add sewing! As a sewist of 50 years, I will add two tiny points here for you. Firstly, you'll see an improved look sewing around cover from the outer side. The bobbin side of machine does not produce as fine looking a stitch as the needle side. And where you stop & start, I would pull both threads to the wrong side. Once your threads are cut, gently pull up the bobbin thread up on the wrong side. The top thread will form a loop which you can pull with pin or awl. If you tie the two threads in a square knot, you'll never see a thread pop loose. If you are at an edge , you can adjust the knot to the wrong side. These were details taught in schools when home ec was still a required course.
@TreasureBooks
@TreasureBooks 3 года назад
Thank you so much Tracey. I do usually do that, but for this project I did the sewing on the inside so that I can keep those bits of fabric tight while sewing :) I also do pull both ends to the inside but I haven't been tying a square knot admittedly, I just kind of put the threads together and make one knot. Thank you for the tips, I love tips!!!
@suestoons
@suestoons 3 года назад
My seamstress grandmother will be rolling in her grave, but I have to ask: When you say "gently pull up the bobbin thread up on the wrong side" exactly what does that mean? There are so many papercraft tutorials that use sewing as an embellishment that I'm considering buying an inexpensive machine to use just for crafting. After watching this tutorial for the umpteenth time, I think I might actually do it now. I'm concerned about sewing through the glue. Is there a type of needle I should get extras of for replacing inevitable breakage? I'm assuming that using the machine outside of its intended parameters will be hard on it.

For me, the most critical part! When you start to explain how to bind the envelopes to the spine, you say to use a ‘3 ??? Stitch’, which I’m not familiar with, then you speed up the video and I’m not sure quite what you did. I’ve played back that little part about 10-12 times, still not sure if I understand it

Thank you so much for this idea. I actually made two books for myself after I saw the first video. She's absolutely right when she says to leave the envelopes open so you can bind them! I managed to bind one after closing the envelopes but it was very difficult with messy needle marks and poked fingers. I had to create a separate spine from my cover and glued it into a new cover after the sewing was done. Not easy. I use one book to hold ephemera and one to hold my stickers. They sit perfectly on my crafting cart and are so pretty, easy to grab with everything organized!

Fantastic instructions!!! Do you have any suggestions to keeping the sewing machine healthy when sewing paper ? I love the look of sewn paper, but when I did so in a few journals, it had a terrible effect on my machine. Too much paper dust has caused havoc, even after having it cleaned twice. Do you have any suggestions? Thx!!

I stumbled across your video, not even seen one of these journals before but was mesmerised from the outset. Your presentation is precise, and calm. I love the way you point out the pitfalls like the bulky corners and show us how to deal with all the bits that can go wrong. So so good, that I’m inspired to have a go. Thank you. Your journals are stunning and invoke a feeling of excitement to look inside. Something to put on the coffee table for all to admire. 💗

May I make a suggestion or 2? On the inside of the cover, if you make the paper 2 1/2 times the size ypu need, you could have a fold-out paper for notes, important information, etc. Perhaps the directions on how to make another book, in case you forget? Also, I added a glued-in envelope to my back inside cover. I put my list of important people in my life, and their significant dates. I made my envelopes from 12 x 12 paper, and they can each hold several cards. So book #1 is my birthday card book, so I can prepare in advance. If you are making a "regular" journal, ie; one with signatures made of sheets of paper, you can add a library pocket inside the front cover to hold a bookmark, ready when you need it. One more idea: you can string beads to the outside of the spine when you sew in the signatures. I like that the envelopes are sewn in separately. If one gets damaged, it can easily be replaced without remaking the entire book. Kudos for a WONDERFUL tutorial. I enjoyed it as much as making the book! Xoxox, Michelle, a new fan.

Thank you so much :) I have done all of those things you mentioned, in different books along the way. I have stopped stringing beads to the outside binding on spine, as I find they are in the way when using/writing in the journal :) But I absolutely looooove that look :) and it would be nice for this project, as the book is not used for writing :) Thanks for watching :)

I'm going to make these as Christmas gifts for crafty friends! I don't know if someone else has mentioned this, but you can improve results, prevent errors with the envelope punch if you actually measure on the two opposing sides. (I got this from a video on the use of the punch.) So instead of just rotating on the basis of one measurement, you flip a full 180 degrees, measure on the other side and then use both scored lines as the guides for the remaining sides. This is pretty much goof-proof, whereas rotating 90 degrees and lining up the score lines on 3 sides can amplify a small error due to simple angle of vision distortion. I had a lot of useless mess envelopes before I tripped over this advice.

Excellent tutorial. I can tell a ton of work goes into your tutorials. I admire your art and your hard work. tip *When gluing to a shiny paper or printed on side of packaging/magazine page may I suggest scuffing it slightly with sandpaper or an emery board. Hope it helps a bit.

Thanks for watching!! Please note CORRECTION!!! - ( STEP 10) - If the width of the spine is to have 12 rows of holes, there will be 13 spaces so width should be divided by 13 not 12.

Natasha - love this journal and your precise demonstration. Non-related to the content though, RU-vid put an ad every three minutes or so. I don't know if you have any control over this, but the ads sure are aggravating. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us.

Ah ok. I don't have any control over the amount of ads put on a video unfortunately. I could turn them off alltogether, but then I won't get the little bit of $$$ that I get from ads :( I know its annoying, but I put many many hours into making videos
