Today, I finally have that Force Patina tutorial I've mentioned a few times. Give it a try and let me know.
Material used are basic salt and ammonia, things you can find anywhere, but the wax I used to seal it at the end can be found here:
Renaissance Wax Polish: a.co/99mheJg
If you give this a try come and show it of over on The Daily Fidget Facebook group. Don't forget to tag me in your post!

The whitish stuff is lead oxide that's why forced patina's look best on naval brass (lead free) or brass with low lead content the Chinese companies often use brass with a high lead content they do this to save on milling costs (brass with a high lead content is softer and creates less traction making it easier to machine)

MightyRude Hey, look at you with the pro tips. I didn't know that. I'll have to enlist you a professional expert on metals. Teach me about tungsten as I will have a few pieces to talk about soon. =D

Hobby Timmy Tungsten (non English speaking countries call it wolfram)has almost the same mass (weight) as gold is very hard and has a very high melting point The problem with tungsten is its brittleness tungsten can be brittle at room temperature because of its high melting point the high melting point makes the super cooled state around room temperature making it brittle (tungsten carbide is a mix of tungsten and ceramic (also high melting point)and is also quite brittle at room temperature) This is why milled tungsten objects are mostly made from tungsten sintered in a matrix with other metals like copper, zinc or silver (or a combination) the softer metals also make it easier (cheaper) to mill Because of its hardness tungsten can only be milled with tungsten (like tungsten or tungsten carbide for milling tungsten copper) or diamond tools making tungsten one of the most expensive metals to mill (tungsten itself is not expensive) Tungsten itself is poisonous so don't lick or eat the spinner (just to be safe) That is about all i know about tungsten used in spinners if you want to know more (like melting point or other uses of tungsten) you can search google or ask an actual metallurgist (i'm just a guy interested in metals) Hope this information helps you out a bit

the tissue helps the ammonia evaporate faster than it would regularly which helps the patina happen faster

I did this to my brass tri-stubby clone. I then coated it with 5 coats of clear lacquer...looked beautiful. Then I dropped it and chipped the clear coat. So then the clear just started to peel off pretty easily. So I don't recommend clear coating it. I will try the wax like you did. I will likely have to do it over again since I have rubbed it clean...from well...spinning it.

Moneypit330 I like the shine from the gloss coat so I was happy to see the wax had a bit of a sheen.

So cool! If it wasn't such a mess to ship international I would ask you if you would take on a projekt. Really nice! 👍

Nice video, thanks! What texture does the forced patina provide (un-waxed/varnished) compared to the raw brass? I am considering doing this on a brass knife handle. I don't have any particular goals in mind with it so if I were to just force patina it and then NOT coat it or wax it would I rub off the blue stuff or would it feel kind of rusty?

I use the hard boiled egg method on all my brass ... It's the same method used to patina sterling silver ... It gives the brass a beautiful natural patina ... And, it's so much easier

Can you do anything with electroplated brass ?
@OldManTim
@OldManTim 7 лет назад
Well you could sand it down and/or tumble it, but the electroplated will protect the material from what I did in this video.

Isnt the blue the brass rusting?
@OldManTim
@OldManTim 7 лет назад
C.M.F's Spinners Yup, essentially thats what is going on. The forced patina is just a fun way to give it a customized weathered look. Certainly not for everyone or every spinner.

If u want to restore it to new use kokam ,tamurine and little salt and rub all over It is Indian way.

I gotta admit, the whole process what pretty amazing, but do not like the patina. I sure hope the natural patina doesn't turn out this way.
@OldManTim

Ramza Natural patina certainly does not turn out this way, unless you leave it in the ocean. Normal patina is like an old brass doorknob.
