One of the best tutorials on reading SIds and Stars I feel. Erudite, full of clear and lucid explanations. Thank you so much Filbert

Oh, thank you very much for taking the time to say so. I spent a very long time producing this one and, being on a relatively niche subject compared with what I usually do, it's had relatively few views and comments like this make it all feel worthwhile. 🙂

I confess, I am already quite comfortable following SIDs and STARs and the charts all make sense to me - but I do always think I would find it hard to actually explain them to somebody else! Now I know what I will do -- I'll simply send them here! It's a great overview and very well explained. Bravo, well done sir.

Thank you! Of all my videos, this was the hardest to do and one of the least popular, but I'm pleased with it. 🙂

Very hard to follow, but absolutely necessary to understand modern aviation. Keep it up, much needed.

Nicely done. One thing on the NEXEN departures not mentioned in the video is the note below the NameID: (Jets Only). This procedure is not for propeller aircrafts. On VATSIM I've often seen pilots filing NEXEN departures using a turboprop or vice versa - filing a prop deprture when flying a jet.

Thanks so much for making this tutorial and explaining the SIDS, STARS, approaches and transitions. I could never find all the pieces of the puzzle, but this seems to nail it. All of your videos are fantastic, and I've subscribed.

Great Video. One question: If the altitude constraint is touched to a leg instead of a waypoint (see 20:00 in the video), at what point do I have to be on that altitude. Before the leg starts or while I'm on the leg?

I enjoy your airport reviews and as a result I own 8 airports after watching your reviews. Could you review Aerosoft Greater Moncton. I was born in New Brunswick so keen on seeing this airport..
@FilbertFlies
@FilbertFlies 3 года назад
Glad you're enjoying the reviews. I've got to be honest, I've got quite a big backlog to get through and not enough hours in the day, so I'm not sure I'll be able to do Greater Moncton. I'm having to be quite selective - I'm focussing on big airports that I know will have a broad appeal, and throwing in a few from smaller developers that I think are good and which people might not otherwise discover. But will try! :-)

Really useful and clear tutorial - thanks. One question on the speeds indicated in the charts - for the glide slope calculation it uses ground speed, but when there is a maximum speed in the approach charts for example I presume that is air speed? Is that correct?
@FilbertFlies
@FilbertFlies 3 года назад
Yes indeed, the maximum speeds are all IAS. Glad you found it clear and useful.🙂

This was great! One of the questions I always have is "how do you know which STARs and SIDS to use?" Is this mainly based of weather/wind direction? Might seem like a silly question but I've always wondered how do you pick the runways and whatnot. :)
@FilbertFlies
@FilbertFlies 3 года назад
So the choice of runway is almost always weather dependent. You'll almost always take off and land into the wind, unless the wind speed is very slow or the airport has a preferential runway system. The choice of SID is dependent on your initial flight plan waypoint & the runway you'll be taking off from. The choice of STAR is dependent on your final flight plan waypoint and SOMTIMES the runway you'll be landing on. Certain STARs are specific to a single runway, others can be used for multiple runways.
