It’s another Sew Along Sunday and today we are tackling a tutorial. I made a pair of jeans not long ago that had a bit of a flared cropped leg. While this look is very trendy and is a look that I like, I came to the conclusion that I would just get more longevity out of a more narrow leg. Today I am sharing that alteration! As always, let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!
What I’m wearing:
Itch to Stitch Hepburn Turtleneck (affiliate): itch-to-stitch...
The jeans I’m altering were made using Itch To Stitch Liana Stretch Jeans (affiliate): itch-to-stitch...

Thanks Whitney. Trendy doesn’t always mean that they look good on anyone who isn’t a tall skinny model. The difference between before and after is so much better on you. I’ve done this a couple of times on thrifted (good quality) jeans and it’s given them a whole new life. Really looking forward to Tee Shirt sewing with you. Yippee 👏👏👏

I just found your video, I was about to take my leg pants in. I wasn’t sure on how to go about it, so this was perfect timing. I’ve subscribed, Thank you.

This video came at a great time. I just got some pants for $1 but they tapper out and I didnt like the way they looked. I was going to take it in from just 1 side 😂. They are not jeans but I would imagine it's the same concept. Thank you

To make room for the top stitching, could it have been easier to: Sew one 1/2 of the leg as you did. Transfer the markings as you did, but instead do the top stitching, then sew the second half of the taper. It might give you room to work, and might not be snug. Just a thought. Thanks fo sharing. They look Great!

The pants look great! I'm short too and think this alteration lengthen and elongate your legs. I'm there for shoulder pads removal, I thrifted a silk dress with large pads, so glad it didn't attempt without seeing your tutorial first! Also going to make t shirts with you 😋❤️🌸 God bless you, I am praying for you and your family 💜

I am so looking forward to t-shirt week, I have one started, but waiting for your info on how you do the neck band. I hope you get to that part right away, as I want to get the shirt finished-thanks. Love the redo on the jeans, looks much better on you.

I will definitely be covering neckbands. T-shirt week starts next Sunday and I’m going to have impromptu sew alongs throughout the week (as well as 4 normal videos). It should be a party!

Thank you-this tutorial is so timely for me, as I have a few pair of pants/trousers with a wider leg that are not terribly flattering on me, and I've been debating as to how to accomplish narrowing the legs with success. Your video, with its little tips and trick, just fits the bill perfectly. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing this alteration, I have a perfectly good pair of stretch chinos with a back seam/notch and the legs are a little too wide. I now feel confident in altering this to a straighter, more current look.

Can't wait for the dress tutorial. I would love to make not nessecarily a true sundress with spaghetti straps, but a summer sleeveless dress with maybe nice wider shoulder straps. Also can't wait for T-shirt week! Can't have too many T-shirts, right? 😊❤

Hi Whitney. You do explain things well. Also I’m really looking forward to tshirt week. I am very interested in which patterns you end up using. I have a similar bust size and can’t wait to see what styles you think are most flattering.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
Any t-shirt pattern would work, but I am using Pamela’s Patterns Perfect T-shirt, Itch To Stitch Idyllwild, Love Notions Classic t-shirt, and Seamwork Elli Henley.

Ugh I just did a very bad job doing this alteration on a friends jeans/pants. Made it too complicated and actually ended up ripping a pair across the back leg :( Definetly using this method next time) Thanks for the video

Hello! Is it possible to make a giant flare a smaller flare? Or does it have to be taken in completely?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 5 месяцев назад
You can definitely just make the flare smaller instead of removing it entirely. It would be done the same way, just with less removed on each side.

Jeans look great! I can't wait to alter the pattern I made from my favorite pair of RTW pants, so the next group I make will be more stylish :) The original legs are more straight than flared. Would you do anything differently, other than start higher up on the leg?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
Nope!! You can just take them in a little higher on the leg. Just make sure you’re taking it in equally on either side!
@janetlink9756
@janetlink9756 4 года назад
If there is a back seam would you just narrow the leg there or would that throw the grain line off?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
That will throw the grain line off. If there is a back seam, I would just take out evenly on all seams!
@meggraham4974

Thank you for sharing. I wouldn't wrestle with the top stitching. Grannaboo03 said what i was thinking. Leave side seam until top stitching is finished. Meg

No. You can use the overlock stitch or zig zag stitch on your sewing machine instead!

My flares are not tight enough around the thigh
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 2 года назад
I would do the same alterations, but start at the thigh. I would try and take equal amounts out from both the outer seam and the inseam to keep the leg balanced, but you can definitely tighten them up doing this same thing.
@cynthialindsley5117

Couldn't you just measure the width at the knee and continue that measurment on down to the hem?
@patriciaoswalt6464
@patriciaoswalt6464 4 года назад
She made them narrower at the hem then the jeans are at the knee.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
Yes, you could. I did, however, taper mine a bit at the ankle!
