In this video tutorial I show how I like to paint brake calipers when I choose not to powder coat them. It's very rare that I choose paint over powder coat, but sometimes exceptions are made. Before powder coating, this is how I have always painted brake calipers, and it has not failed me once.
These are remanufactured Akebono brake calipers from a 370z, or G37 Sport, that are making their way onto my 05 G35 sedan drift side project.
Calipers used:
-A-Premium Reman Front Akebono Brake Calipers
amzn.to/3D6EWkW
-A-Premium Reman Rear Akebono Brake Calipers
amzn.to/3ZOJZ34
Paint used:
-VHT High Temperature Engine Enamel Primer [SP148]
amzn.to/3QTxZJq
-VHT High Temperature Engine Metallic Burnt Copper [SP402]
amzn.to/3ZLVacZ
-VHT High Temperature Engine Enamel Gloss Clear [SP145]
amzn.to/3R30uVd
Products used:
-Klean Strip Acetone
amzn.to/3kyRjzw
-Black Nitrile Gloves
amzn.to/3WrgOQE
-Low Lint Shop Towels
amzn.to/3WsY9Us
Primer application info:
-Ensure ambient temperature is between 60°F - 95°F, and relative humidity below 60%
-Light Coat, wait 10-minutes, light coat, wait 10-minutes, medium wet coat
-Wait 30-minutes before color coat
Paint application info:
-Ensure ambient temperature is between 60°F - 95°F, and relative humidity below 60%
-Light Coat, wait 10-minutes, light coat, wait 10-minutes, medium wet coat
-Wait 1-hour before baking
...or if not applying a decal or stencil
-Wait 10-minutes after final coat and apply clear coat
Clear application info:
-Ensure ambient temperature is between 60°F - 95°F, and relative humidity below 60%
-Light Coat, wait 10-minutes, light coat, wait 10-minutes, medium wet coat
-Wait 1-hour before baking
Cure time:
-Bake at 200°F for 1 hour (after part reaches base temperature)

Great video. Tip: Do 4-5 coats clear. Then to get rid of orange peel, finger wet sand with 2000 grit then 4000 grit, then polish/buff out with Meguiars ultimate compound and a microfiber cloth for glass like powder coating finish. 😎👍 Seriously, I've🎉 had mad compliments. Looks amazing.

how long do you wait after the clear to wet sand?

Oops. I put the clear then put it in the oven. I didn't know I needed to put it in the oven then do the clear.

I have Brembo 4pot calipers from a Cobalt AS/HHR SS, so obviously you need to drain the brake fluid. Now my question is what if there is just a bit of fluid left in the, will putting them in the oven do anything to hurt them, also does anything happen to the rubber seals in the oven? Thanks dude and that was the best tutorial for painting calipers. I am also using the VHT Burt Copper but with red decals, just like they came on my G35 6MT Coupe!!

Curious what the baking is for? Did I miss it in the video? Are you doing it to cure the paint faster? Can this be replicated without baking?
@justhere4721
@justhere4721 17 дней назад
VHT high heat paints recommend you bake the paint for it to cure and fully withstand high heat applications. You can skip it if you're not worried about it reaching high temperatures.

Why would the 2k clear be "overkill"? VHT scratches off easy af.

Was one can enough to paint all 4 brake calipers ?
@Inner_Sanctum
@Inner_Sanctum Год назад
I used 1.5 cans for primer, 1.5 cans for color, and 1.5 cans of clear for all 6 calipers. You could probably get away with 1 can each for only 4 calipers.

@@Inner_Sanctum great, debating hard about powder coating and paint, gettin reman and new caps but scared of the more involved process (piston disassembly etc.) and what constant heat will do to it. in your experience does powder coating handle light track use?

@@Inner_Sanctum my fronts are aluminum which is main concern*
@Inner_Sanctum
@Inner_Sanctum Год назад
@@dejuanru powder coat is much more robust than paint, unless you’re talking about UV stability over time. The normal curing temps for powder are around 412*F from 10-15 minutes once part reaches temperature. That temperature is too low to cause any ill effects on aluminum calipers. Most aluminum alloys don’t even begin to anneal until they reach 620*f+ for a couple of hours minimum. Yeah, disassembling them takes a little more time, and masking is more intense, but you do get “superior” results. This is where things become moot. Powder IS better than paint when it comes to durability when subjected to certain conditions; impact resistance is one of them. Whether or not that durability difference matters is what people debate. Just because paint isn’t as strong as powder doesn’t mean it won’t hold up just fine under the conditions of usage. I think some people just get stuck in a certain way of thinking and don’t actually think about the use case. I don’t need impact resistance for calipers. I just need the coating to be hard enough to resist dirt/grime penetrating, hard enough to make cleaning easy, hold up to the heat, have chemical resistance, and have good UV stability. Paint does all of that…

VHT is pure garbage. That shit starts flaking off even if you properly bake it as instructed. Can scrape it off easily with your fingernail.

Imo it depends on the level of effort you're trying to put in. Spray works fine for most people who want a simple and cheap, slight cosmetic upgrade. By this logic, why not just pay for the true upgraded, factory powder coated calipers? They will always have the better equipment and do a better job than an at home project. It just costs a lot more
@guciodog1
@guciodog1 Год назад
@@FlavorOfTheMonthChannel Spray, esp. VHT, is garbage. it might look half decent when you bolt it on and for a few days after, but It'll start flaking off soon after. Power is not that much more expensive and is a few orders of magnitude more durable than any shit that comes in a can.
