Disclaimer: Sorry, I'm not really a FM expert :/
Part 8: The kernel osciallator provides true FM, PM and AM. You can do even more like wavetable modulation - everything at audio rate. There are six kernels within one osciallator and you can the algorithm almost arbitrarily.
First, we are going to try the modulations at LFO-speed. Then, we switch to audio speed and have a look on all other parameters of this model.

Excellent description and tutorial on what Kernel Mode is. Very nice choice of albums in the background, especially the first two I can see - you have good taste. What are the other ones?

Oh, thanks! I'm changing the albums from time to time. Here I can see Depeche Mode: Some Great Reward, Jean-Michel Jarre: Oxygène, Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin 1 and Mike Oldfield: Amarok.

I think it may be easier to learn how to fly the Space Shuttle...lol. I got mine a month ago, loaded by the dealer. Have not past the presets ...wow. this thing is awesome 👌

Great run through. Weird they chose to call this a Kernel Oscillator but I'm sure there's a good explanation for that. I suppose it's not possible to import DX sounds? Not sure I heard any note on that in the video.

Thanks! It's called kernel because this is the name of oscillators within one oscillator in the Quantum (same name in waveform mode). And you can import DX7 files, though it does not sound 100% same.

@@SynthesizerVideo Thanks for clarifying! So many features in this synth I didn't realise before. Would be really nice to have a software editor to get a better overlook of all parameters. But the screen helps a lot. (Just not a big fan of touch screens...)

someone knows how the "Waldorf Quantum", the "Percussa SSP" and the "Kodamo essenceFM" compare for FM synthesis: number of operators & carries, polyphony/voices, timbrality, funcionalities for explorative sound-design, output channels for routing & mixing, intuitive performance possibilities, digital sound quality (bit rate, chip-processor etc.), control & response latency (buffer, RAM etc.), ...?

how may Operators & Modifiers des it provide? how many layers (hierarchical steps) can be patched with the Operators & Modifiers to build an Algorythm?

It has 6 operators. Each can be audio or modulation. You can create almost every possible algorithm (like all six in a row - this would be the greatest hierarchy).

Inside of 1 kernel there are 6 audio sources or 6 modulation sources. Are we able to modulate the other 2 on board oscillators using the 1 kernel oscillator?

No XD Inside a kernel-mode oscillator there are 6 kernels (called "operator" in Yamaha FM synths). You can decide whether a kernel is a audio or modulation kernel. You can have 6 audio kernels or 5 modulation and 1 audio kernel (or something in between). You can not combine this mode with the other 2 true oscillators.

You can apply Ring Modulation between osc2 and osc1 plus osc3 and osc 2, this is the same whichever synthesis type you use on any oscillator but it is merely a percentage application and lacks any real control, however it can produce some excellent effects when used properly.

1. Reading through a recent synthtopia article, they asserted that each kernel had a stereo output pan value. Is this correct or are they mistaken? (The 3rd paragraph following the Kernel Synthesis title: www.synthtopia.com/content/2019/01/24/waldorf-quantum-synth-gets-major-update-kernel-synthesis-engine/) 2. I don't suppose there's a means of either modulating the routing algorithm or preset?
