Hello! My name is Márcia. I'm from Brazil , Rio de janeiro. When I was nine, I lost my father and I could not learn english. Now, I'm 62 and I joke about my english. I met you in Seth's videos. Amigo Gringo. I really learn english. You're a very good teacher. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for your comment, I believe we're never too old to learn and I' sorry for your loss. I had a tragic loss early in life too, which affected my education. Sending you lots of love to Brazil Márcia!
If I didn't know what you do, I would definitely say that you were an english teacher of some kind. Your sentences gave me goose bumps, reminded me my old english classes. 😄
My husband passed away recently. I was unsure if there was an age group that people preferred for an English tutor. I had never heard of Cambly so I needed to research the group. I appreciate the points you made and I am feeling more encouraged after hearing you talk about your job. Thank you. I too am a traveler and your experiences sound wonderful with all the people you have had a chance to talk with around the world. Sounds like an interesting and fun career.

Thanks, Charlie. I'm looking to get back into the job market, and I believe this would be a good start. We're up there in years and are looking to retire soon. The pay might not be the greatest, but it would be money we wouldn't have had otherwise.
Excellent video Charlie! I submitted my application on 10 May and now it´s 22 May when I´m writing this comment and yet waiting for an answer. $0.17 per minute ends up being like $10.2 an hour, so not too much but it adds up if you take it as a supplementary source of pocket money. Cheers!
Thanks for your comment! Yeah I agree it's a good supplement. I hope you heard back, I know some people get in right away and some wait weeks or months which is annoying. fingers crossed for you!
Michael Venn Hi Michael, thanks for your comment, they’ve recently updated the site so I didn’t know that asked for a further code. Mine’s charlie221 - thank you and let me know how you get on/ if you need anything else.🤗
Hello Charlie. I thought this was a fascinating video and I am prompted to become a tutor when I have fewer commitments in the not too distant future. I see some of the comments refer to 'accents'. The viewers should be aware that Oxford English - which is probably the standard for quality English, has NO accent. It is accentless English and is the ideal English to teach as it has no English regional, American, European or Oriental accents and inflections. Therefore the students are not led into learning any non-standard English from a part of the world which may be thousands of miles away from where the student is sitting.
Hi, thanks for sharing your point, although I would add that new teachers shouldn't be put off teaching if they have an accent because so few of us speak the Queen's English, so it is good for students to hear accents from all over on Cambly so they can familiarise themselves with listening to all variants of English. Many of my students see me once a week and tutors with other dialects throughtout the week. :)
They do happen, but if you find it uncomfortable to talk to someone you can hide your profile from them. If they're really inappropriate you can ban them so their profile is taken down. If they're only mildly flirtatious I would laugh it off and change the subject. Now, even when I open priority hours they often get booked with students so I can't remember the last time I had a trail caller. Hope this helps. :)
Please, on Cambly, 1.Do we teach the way we want to? 2.How are we paid?(I am not sure about Paypal in my country) 3.Do we use only skype or..? 4.How long does one class last? 5.How much do we get paid per 45 minute class? 6.How do You share the screen with a student on skype? Thank You kindly
Hi, it's not on Skype, just through Cambly platform. They do only pay through Paypal though. Classes are flexible and conversational and you're paid per minute. :)
I have a suggestion to you ,i have been learning english for a long time ,i realize one thing that if you make video it should be with native English speakers, because healthy communication helps learners to understand very easily
Hi, this video is actually for those wanting to teach English and isn't designed with learners in mind, but you can find more tips on 'Charlie's English Channel' - maybe I will get a guest speaker on there soon! :)
Hi there, Charlie. l'm a Norwegian high school English teacher and my hobby is to learn and guess the different English dialects. The way you pronounce your "o"s and "u"s however, bewilder me, because l never heard them before. lt's clearly "English" English, not Scottish, not lrish, not Welsh, not Cockney. Please tell me.
I'm from a region called Yorkshire in England, we're often teased by the rest of the country for our accent, particularly our pronunciation of vowel sounds too! Well spotted ;)
I'm American. I would love to do this. I should be getting a laptop really soon now, but is it possible to use Cambly from your phone? Also, I've heard a lot of people say they applied but never got a response back. How quickly did you get hired after submitting your application video?
Hey, Charlie! I started using Cambly last Sunday, but not as a tutor. I'm just using this great teaching platform to practice my speaking skills. Well, I just watched your video. You explained how Cambly works quite well. Thanks, but I wish you spoke American English because your accent is a bit hard for me to understand. The way you said "tutor", oh my God! ;) ;) ;) Thanks anyway.
Hi, thanks for your comment! I hope you're enjoying Cambly and don't worry there are many American tutors on there! I also have a channel called 'Charlie's English Channel' for those learning english if that's any help for you - although yes I do have a British accent! :D
One of the beautiful things about learning English, is knowing that not everyone speaks 'American English''. If you really want to improve your English, learn from various native English speakers and you will see there are tons of accents because it's a global language. The more you practice, the more you'll learn and the more you'll understand other accents. :)
Hi Charlie! A wonderful video I came across while searching for some online tutoring platforms to apply as a teacher. Do you have any suggestions for others that hire a teacher without a degree or perhaps newly enrolled students? Thank you so much, looking forward to your answer! All the best! :))
Hi, there are many platforms that teach English on a casual basis and I believe don't require a degree. I only have experience with Cambly at present though, but usually platforms which teach adults are a good bet, as those for teaching children have stricter requirements. Try googling 'teach english to adults online.' I hope that helps. :)
Good morning because it's dawn time Charlie. Question: Where do I register to become an English teacher with "cambly.com". I thought I was already registering, but I could clearly see the costs of each class with a tutor and my goal wasn't that........?
Hi! Your video was very helpful! But I was just wondering what you recommend to put in the video for the "interview" part of applying? Because I'm really struggling to do it. Thanks for you help!
hi, thank you for your videos about becoming a cambly tutor. I've been looking into it and have done everything but submit my video to them and I have had a few questions & needed answers before I commit to going through with it/ Could you possibly send me the links to the video of what the video introduction should roughly contain and what to do the prepare to have lessons or plan them especially how to keep the attention on you to teach with I guess nothing? anyway thanks again & I will definitlly use your referral code when & if I start.
Should the Cambly tutors be native English speakers only? I am not native, can I apply for this job because I have over 20 years of IELTS and ESL teaching experience . Please advice with thanks.
Hi Charlie. I have been accepted as a tutor. Just wondering how you handle corrections when speaking with students. Do you have a tutorial on how you go about this? thank you.
I haven't but I'm making more videos in the coming weeks so thanks for your question, it's a hard thing to explain in a comment so I will definitely try make a video on it. Have a great day! :)
Hey Charlie I applied to Cambly in February and a week and a half ago I got an email that I had been moved to the shortlist of highly qualified tutors and that they would send me an email when my account had been activated. For you did you receive this email? If so how long was it until your account was activated? Also don’t know if you had maybe talked to other tutors but do you maybe know how long the average wait time is until you are activated?
Hi Charlie I am an English teacher from India. Do I have a realistic chance to be a tutor at Cambly ? Pls advise since it seems it's only for Native speakers . Thanks in advance !!
heyy i am from the uk i was born in london and it was also my first language i also speak turkish because of my parents i am a student and i am fluent with both the languages do you think i would be able to do it because im a student at sixths form thank you
Hi, if you're 18 I don't see why you wouldn't be able to teach on Cambly, if you come across confident and well spoken in your application video. Unlike other sites there's no requirement to have a degree to teach on Cambly. :)
Hi, there was a hiring freeze, however I have noticed more tutors have been approved from my referral code (www.cambly.com/en/tutors?referralCode=charlie221) this week, so it looks like things are moving again! :) Also, if you'd like a cheaper way to get your TESOL certification I work with International Open Academy and have a code for their course, making it £19 instead of £119: offers.internationalopenacademy.com/englishteachercharlie/course/tesol-course - let me know if you have any questions about either! :)
Yes,your video is interesting.i will like to understand tools I can use online for this teaching. Moreover apart from this site which other sites employ online teachers on science subjects?
I don't know for science specifically, I know the UK has some online platforms to teach GCSE subjects like science, not sure what country you are in but it pays well to teach a specialised subject in your local area here :)
Hey, Charlie. I'm Ninad, an English Tutor from Mumbai, India. That was a great video and i found it quite useful. You mentioned about the rating, and i was wondering if you could tell me about the parameters on which tutors are rated by the students, just to get an insight into the psychology of students and the factors that they give importance to in an online tutorial. You could just state them in a reply to this comment. Also, do you know if Cambly is hiring now - June 17, 2020? Thanks a lot !!! :-)
Hi, I'm glad it was helpful! Unfortunately I don't work for Cambly head office so I don't know what a student sees when they rate us. I also don't know if Cambly are currently hiring but they did lift the hiring freeze after lockdown started - sorry this comment doesn't answer your questions but I wish you a great day! :)
When I recorded mine it had to be recorded though the Cambly platform therefore had to be via the webcam. Don't worry about it being too professional looking, so long as it's personable. :)
Thank you Charlie! Do I need any teaching certificate for this role? Do I need to know how to prepare for IELTS or other exams for example? Is it much more possibility to be hired if I know how to teach for specific English exams? Thank you!
You don't need a teaching certificate but I do think it helps. I work with International Open Academy and can offer a huge discount on TEFL and TESOL courses at £19 instead of £119 if this is relevant for you: offers.internationalopenacademy.com/englishteachercharlie/teaching-courses Also Cambly have IELTS prep courses you can access and share with students which are easy to follow, but I would say I've had one handful of students request IELTS help and I've met 500 so far! Hope this helps :)
Hi Charlie. I just had a question. Ive just finished my TEFL course and I am looking to start teaching. I would love to start with Cambly as it would give me the experience I need. I am a native English speaker, however I am from South Africa and therefore I have an accent. Will Cambly still hire if you have an accent?
Hi, yes, on the Cambly Facebook group there are many teachers from South Africa! I think you have a gorgeous accent, FYI. :) I feel I should warn you there's a freeze on hiring at the moment due to an influx of teachers working from home right now. :(
Officially no. But if you have a clear enough accent to sound like a native then yes potentially. There are other services that hire non-native speakers.
@@golsaemami1670 they do accept non native speakers but the payment is very low and you only get paid for the time you speak but not for the time you’re waiting for calls, I decided not to apply for Cambly anymore 😑
You are only getting £7.30 a hour ? That's on palfish u get double that amount ? I don't work for either I am weighing up the odds myself but I can't see why you would work for £7 an hour . 🤔
Hi, I don't work for Cambly head office, so I don't hire people. I'm just a tutor, but I believe they only have an English teaching platform at present. But there are other language platforms out there! :)
Hello. I am a retired elementary school teacher and worked with English Language Learners all during my career. How does one apply specifically for Cambly Kids? I find it on their website, but can't figure out how to apply specifically for the children's tutoring. Your video is very informative- thanks.
Hi Brian, you just caught me replying to comments. :) I believe you have to apply generally for Cambly first, then you can email them your interest in teaching for Cambly Kids - it sounds basic for such a large company but their customer service is quite good, it seems you get allocated one person to deal with your enquiries as I've been in touch with my guy a few times now and he's great. That sounds salesy but I only did this video off my own back and would report back to you if I had any issues with them - I do hope that helps though.
I clicked your link to sign up for Cambly but it is also asking for the tutor that referred (me)? What should I write here? Do you think this job would be good for a student who is just graduating high school or are they looking for more experienced teachers? I was thinking of having my teenager sign up to teach also (in addition to myself) but not sure if it’s a good fit or not? Thanks- Tricia
Hi, I believe they would have to be an adult, 18 or over, but no degree is required, so long as they have a proficient knowledge of English and like talking to a range of people. My username is CHARLIE RAS, however I see your comment was a while ago - I hope you managed to sign up? There's now a freeze on recruitment.
Hi Jaimee, sorry for the late reply, I didn't expect this video to get so many comments while I had a YT break to move house! Did you make your profile video? This has been a common request so I will make a video on this for next week. :)
I am using cambly right now. I have a rating of 4.87. Its going well, its fun. My question is, is it true they deactivate your account without notice if they become less busy?
Hi Oliver - I've never heard of this myself, I would think the only reason to deactivate a tutor would be if they were reported for inappropriate behaviour, because we're not contracted hours they don't lose any money with our profiles being live, so they wouldn't have reason to deactivate us I don't think. I hope it's going well for you! :)
Hi would love to be part of Cambly, as a tutor. I am very fluent in English, both written & conversational, looking forward to some great guidance to be part of Cambly. Thanks a lot, Dhanu
Hi Dhanu, I just saw your comment, did you apply to Cambly? They usually only accept native speakers I'm not sure if you are or not, but I wish you all the best with your application. :)
Hello Charlie! I happen to be a new Cambly Tutor and so far it's been weird. I've had very disrespectful males which discourages me from continuing. It's draining to teach someone who doesn't want to learn. What do you recommend in terms of handling this type of behavior?
Hi, thanks for coming to me with your question! I'm sorry to hear about your experience so far, I've experienced such students in my earlier days and honestly, my advice is to stop Priority hours and start taking bookings by reservation only as soon as you can. It may mean sucking up and tolerating the rude students until you've done a certain amount of Priority Hours, but I assure you it's worth it as for nearly a year now I've had a great bank of reliable students. And try to remember to hide your profile from a student after a session if you really don't wish to speak with them again. I didn't realise I could do this at first. I hope that helps - let me know how it goes. :)
@@charlieraswrites Thank you! I also reached out to Cambly Kids for the application process. I already teach kids with other ESL companies. I have good news! A person I was speaking with yesterday reserved me for next week, so that's a start. I really appreciate how quickly you answered my question. I will be leaving updates if anything changes. :)
Hi Sarah, sorry I'm late to returning to your comment! I'd say don't overthink it, they just want to get an idea of what you sound like - you film within the app but you can retake it - I did mine about 15 times! Maybe write some bullet points so you don't have to waste as much time as I did. :)
@@charlieraswrites Hi, Charlie, there are two options, you can film the intro video within the app, but you can also record it outside the app and then upload it. I did it like that. However, I have a problem with recording a demo lesson. Yesterday, I uploaded the introduction videos, one for adults and another one for kids and their parents and then I was supposed to record a demo lesson. I postponed it for today, and now the video and button for recording the demo lesson are gone, I cannot see them anywehere. Do you by any chance know why this happened and who I can ask for help?
Hello Berry, Please I'd like to know more about Cambly. Are they hiring now and how long will it take for my video to be approved? I'd like to use your referral link. Can you be of any assistant?
Hi Phyllis, I'm sorry i don't know whether or not they are hiring now, I'd say it's always worth a try, I was approved within 2 weeks but a friend was approved within 6 months! I wish you all the best in your application.
Hi Charlie Berry! Thanks so much for your video! I need your help: I´m trying to apply for Cambly but they´re asking me for a referral code. I´ve tried some I found online but they were useless. Do you know how I could get it? Thanks in advance!!
Hi Sandra, sorry for the late reply, I actually put this problem to Cambly and they said they'd been having issues, they haven't updated my whether these issues have been fixed though. :( Are you looking to apply to teach or to apply as a student? Here are both my referrals if you wish to try them now, you may have already been successful: for tutors = www.cambly.com/en/tutors?referralCode=charlie221 for students = cambly.com/invite/englishteachercharlie
@@charlieraswrites Thanks so much, Charlie. :-) I havent been lucky with Cambly, i´ve had all kind of problems during the application process. What was positive is they gave me some support and I was able to try again BUT when I was done with all except for the video, the button "save and continue" got stuck (not on my netbook, the problem is theirs). Conclusion: I´m trying on other sites.
Hi there) watched your video, was very informative, yet i got some questions if u dont mind, i would love to become a cambly tutor, as i already got some experience in teaching, but i am not a native speaker, do you think that would be possible, thanks in advance
I answer common questions like this on this video> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p5UGCXrXKYE.html please let me know if you have any other questions and I'll maybe make a part 3. :)
Hi there!I have already applied to Cambly but they sent me an email stating that they are currently reviewing my application.Do you know how much time does it take for them to hire you? And how do students book you?Can they evaluate the lesson and give you some stars?
Hi, congratulations on applying! Honestly I was hired in two weeks, but I have heard some people took 3 months for their application to go through, depending on the time of year. If you fast forward to 6.59 I show how students can book on your schedule. ;)
Hey again Charlie!Do you know if spring is a peak season for gettting hired faster than usual?I am thinking of reapplying. And by the way does using a referral speed up the process?Thank you in advance!
@@Cc-eq3ot Hi, it looks like referrals are starting to go through now and I got hired in the spring. I don't have any inside information from Cambly but it's looking promising! :)
@@charlieraswritesHi again! i just receive an email as a spam from Cambly, that advertised Cambly kids. Are you familiar with that Charie? And are natives only welcomed to apply for teaching kids there?
I have been a Cambly tutor for over 1 year. However recently I have been having an issue with the ringtone being muted randomly when a student is trying to call. I think it is an issue with Chrome and I am missing calls and funds because of it. Have you experienced this at any time?
Antoinette P yes! It keeps saying my ringtone is muted but usually when I’m on Cambly I’m at my computer anyway so can keep switching it back - it is annoying though.
Hi Charlie, I applied a couple of months ago, but have heard nothing to date. I re-applied 2 days ago and am hoping for the best. I am currently teaching adults through an online school, but find last minute cancellations a total waste of my time. Do we receive an email if/when we are accepted?? Thanks. Sue Dewar
I hope you hear something soon Sue, their hiring system seems quite inconsistent unfortunately. You will definitely be contacted by email if you are accepted though. :)
