TVI vs AHD - what is the best 1080p HD security camera type? This video will compare surveillance video footage captured from a TVI camera to that of an AHD camera.

Both of the HD security cameras used in this test have the same exact specification. They are both enclosed in the same weatherproof outdoor housing. They have the same number of infrared LEDs and they both have a 2.8-12mm lens.
The only difference between them is that one uses a TVI chip and firmware and the other uses AHD.

Mike Haldas (CCTV Camera Pros co-founder) mounted both cameras at the same location at CCTV Camera Pros warehouse and used the same RG59 coax cable run to connect each camera to an iDVR-PRO hybrid DVR (works with TVI and AHD cameras) to record the surveillance video footage.

Mike's conclusion was that the day time and night time infrared performance was pretty equal when comparing TVI vs AHD.
The TVI camera appeared to be a little bit clearer at closer range, as letters on some product boxes was a little clearer. However, Mike noticed that the lens of the TVI camera was slightly more zoomed in when compared side-by-side with the AHD camera. This is most likely why the TVI camera video was slightly clearer at close range.

Hi, I'm in the business for a number of years too. The angle of the camera depend much more than the lens that it come with and with the vari-focal lens comparison, I doubt you can come up with an accurate assessment. Your method should satisfy most comparison test casually. It just that the way they manufacture the camera varies vastly. The type of chip combination with the DSP and the size of the CCD or CMO can affect it. Also the fact that how they configure the format of image also play a huge factor since a lot of manufacturers change the setting to accommodate or hide the shortcoming of an image. In this case, the TVI camera can have the same angle but because doing so will showcase the unevenness of it's infrared red at the edge they decide to trim it off instead. If you want to do the most accurate comparison between AHD and TVI then I'll advise you to get a 3.6mm hikvision and a samsung AHD to run a test instead.

it's about time we see some clear comparison! Thanks for doing this. We have been getting 500 feet out of HD TVI and have seen reports of 1000 feet no problem. The spec is 1500 feet. What's the distance spec and your experience with AHD? So far we have been exclusively HD TVI for analog transmission video surveillance. There's rumor that 3 megapixel+ will be available soon. Thanks for checking out the video! The spec for AHD and TVI says up to 1600 feet with RG59 coax. We have only tested up to 1000 feet. It worked fine there. We heard about the 3 megapixel. I think it is at least 6 months away. Maybe longer for DVRs that will work with it I suspect.

La gran diferencia entre el TVI y el AHD, es que en el TVI puedes acceder a la configuración de la cámara desde el equipo DVR, puedes trabajar con sus resoluciones, audio, etc. Con el AHD no.

Those blue bins at the back were definitely less sharp on the AHD camera. If everything else (sensor, lens, etc) is identical then that looks like a significant loss of quality to me vs the TVI. I think clarity is more important than color when you need to make out a license plate or a person's face especially if you have to zoom in while watching playback.

I have to ask, did you adjust the focus of the AHD camera so it's the sharpest picture it can be?

Christoph, I assure you that I did my best to focus both cameras but is it possible to be absolutely sure that I focused them both perfectly and equally. With manual focus, vari-focal cameras, I don't think it is possible to be 100% sure. Also, it is not fair to assume that all AHD and HD-TVI cameras would perform the same. This is just two models. I think that we will run another test using motorized zoom / auto focus cameras in the future. Thank you for the question!

Those models have.... identic only lenses and housing.... What sensor is inside TVI camera? What sensor is inside AHD camera? What DSP is on TVI / AHD cameras? Propably totally diffrent, and propably totally diffrent settings are set in each one camera. In AHD cameras, mostly is installed NVP2441H - where sharpness is set too low, 3D/2DDNR functions are set too high. In TVI cameras - mostly inside is Techpoint chip - where sharpness is alredy set high, DNR - low. I think - nowadays, its better to compare cameras as nextchip release 4in1 dsp.

Both the TVI camera and the AHD camera have the same 1/2.9" Sony Progressive Scan CMOS Image Sensor. The OSD settings on both cameras were set to factory default for the testing. CCTV Camera Pros I already checkd specs on your webpage... but its still no answer. Sensor is IMX322. But what are DSP models inside? This is most imporatnt thing. YOu cannot compare 2 cameras with totally diffrent DSP from totally diffrent vendors.

I bought 1080p HD-TVI cameras to replace some older cameras. I am not getting a picture on my DVR from the new cameras. I suspect that the old DVR and new cameras are not compatible? How do I know? Thanks

The user manual and / or technical specification for your new DVR should document if it is compatible with 1080p HD-TVI cameras. If you can not find this, I recommend that you contact the supplier that you purchased from to be sure. If you need additional help, let us know your exact DVR make and model and we will help you research.

I think TVI is better, you can see clear letter in box in TVI, but AHD cannot read...

Both cameras have a 2.8 to 12mm varifocal lens. We had both cameras set to the widest angle at 2.8mm. I do agree that the angle of the AHD camera is a bit wider for some reason. Maybe the sensor on the AHD camera is bigger.

1080p is 4x the resolution of 960H. 1080p is the much higher resolution.

Don't simply state that AHD is better just because you did not have the same focal length on the AHD & TVI. If you are professional enough please do a comparison with same focal length as you stated both the camera is varifocal. Also, have you tested TVI camera with other brands of TVI DVR?

Maybe you did not listen to the entire video or read the comments below it because we did not say that AHD is better than TVI. The focal length of the camera's was the same, however, we did notice that the view area was different. We are not sure if this is because of the sensor or some other factor, but it was noted. tvi ? think you mean tvl Television lines (TVL) is a specification of an analog camera's or monitors's horizontal resolution power. It is alternatively known as Lines of Horizontal Resolution (LoHR) or lines of resolution.

Hi Daniel, TVI (a.k.a HD-TVI) stands for High Definition Transport Video Interface. It is one of a few high definition over coax cable video standards used in the video surveillance industry. You are correct about what TVL is, but that is not what I was referring to in the video. I am comparing an AHD camera to an HD-TVI camera in the video. AHD is another video standard for HD CCTV over coax type security cameras. It is extremely confusing. For example, I purchased a NTSC 1080TVL (Thinking it was a 1080TVI) unit but when hooking it up to my hybrid DVR it shows up as WD1 (960 x 480). Is there equipment that uses 1080TVL with better resolution than WD1? If so, what is the maximum resolution? There are 700TVL, 800TVL, 1000TVL, etc. What is the difference? .. my understanding is the vertical resolution is 75% of the TVL number ... but I also have read over and over that the maximum lines or resolution is 480 with NTSC. Confusing. Thank you.

Brett, Thank you for the kind words! In regards to the TVL rating of analog CCTV cameras (NTSC), here is the deal. Although manufacturers make analog CCTV cameras in 1000TVL+ models, there are no analog DVRs capable or recording higher than 960H resolution, which is 960 x 480 pixels. Do not go by TVL in analog cameras if you are recording to a DVR because you will always be limited by the 960H resolution of the DVR for recording. 700TVL and 1000TVL cameras are fine, but both will look about the same recorded at 960H. Do not go lower than 700TVL if you decide to stick with an analog system. You are better much off with a 1080p TVI or AHD camera with a TVI or AHD compatible DVR that records at 1080p resolution. That is the only way to get a true HD over coax type of video surveillance system. The difference between 960H vs 1080p resolution is drastic.
