Originally known by its project name, "East Side Access", the LIRR's Branch to Grand Central Madison is a beautiful masterpiece of a terminal despite how late it opened. (It was supposed to open in 2018!) The plan for LIRR to connect to Grand Central dates back to roughly 1968's Program for Action Plan. The NYC Subway's 63rd St Tunnel (also part of the PfA Plan) was designed two lower level trackway for future LIRR use. In 2008, plans ramped forward to build this fabled railway finally directly connecting MTA's Two Commuter Railway Systems. The station has a different name than its Metro-North Counterpart to reduce confusion and denote where its concourse is under Madison Avenue.
