+saulpaulus you are right on the button. To be fair though, Monte Cassino was strategic and tactical as a target, whether it was religious or not. It's a modern tragedy, but the Germans showed frequently, excepting Paris, a lot less care for historical places as it was anyways. They used B-24s and 26's primarily on Cassino though. Since it was a 15th Air Force job, those were their primary Heavy and Medium bombers. There was a B-17 group assigned, but I don't think it made Cassino. About 6:35 they mention Cassino themselves. The production folks probably wanted to do something like this and translate it to France because the 8th had more B-17 Groups.

Huh, never knew it was 17s, thought they'd have used 24s and 26s. It might have been a maximum effort by the 15th Air Force. If not, their one B-17 Wing was the 5th and did transfer from the 12th in December of 43, so it probably was probably that wing.

@@raseli4066 Sure it is, it totally is and I wish they'd done that, but each ones story was too remote, Sgt Saunders being in an infantry regiment of the Big Red One or the story line generally implies it given his path from North Africa to Italy, to France and Germany, huge unit, many many small stories, I just dont see the 8th airforce converging with the combat story except one about downed airmen escaping, and you already get episodes of that in this show, and similar in combat as well, but id still watch the hell out of a crossover like that if it existed
