As a young boy of 8 yrs old, I would watch this show with my dad. He was a Marine in WWII, but he would tell me stories of his High School Buddies that never came home, and how the odds were stacked horribly against the Bomber crews, that had to fly 25 missions, or be severely wounded before they could go home. Much respect to those guys. They had had the worst mortality rate of all WWll personnel. They really were the greatest generation.

My dad was a B-17 pilot, 34 missions over Nazi occupied Europe. I asked him many questions about his experiences and he freely answered. After the war he became a family doctor. Through my dad I’ve taken such a big interesting history particularly World War II.

Something about WWII TV shows in the 60's makes them amazing. They are so diverse, so different in plotline, but there is a feel about all of them that is indescribable. Maybe because they were nearly fresh off the war. I don't know. But they capture a feel that the modern-day CGI and multi-million-dollar actors can't. I appreciate it so much, even at 16.

I have the dvd set and I love to watch them over and over again. I remember watching it when I was a kid and was disappointed when it was cancelled. I know they said it was controversial because of Vietnam but one had nothing to do with the other. I have watched them so many times that I'm starting to wear them out. I'll have to order another set because they have more in the scenes than what is on here. My dad served in WWII and my mom was a war bride from England. She amazed me with some of the stories she told from living in England during the war.

After watching the entire series in order, commenting on the big drop-off in quality of both the scripts and acting after Lansing was replaced by Burke, and also noting that Burke did improve in his depiction of the commanding colonel over his 1 1/2 years on the show, I came back to see the beginning episodes to see if perhaps I exaggerated the difference in quality. The answer is a definite no. The quality of the scripts and Lansing's acting were so high in these episodes, it was like each one was a mini-movie. Riveting stuff.

I loved this show as a kid...that said, it now seems to me that the character portrayals really reflect the times in which we lived, the 1960's, not the 1940's. The strident, aggressive way the characters address each other and the undercurrent of latent hostility is really not representative of how air crews interacted with each other and their officers. From accounts I've read there was much more comraderie and good will, more unit cohesion than sometimes portrayed. I guess everything is hyped up for dramatic effect. Quinn Martin, the producer, was known for creating hard edged shows like this, of different genres.

Opening scene, Savage tells the crew “10,000ft, go on oxygen” so co-pilot takes over and savage dons oxygen mask, takes back over from co-pilot, co-pilot sits looking out window as if he was on school day trip. Now, I know this is only a tv show, and they are actors, but please, two things a) you don’t wait until you are at 10,000 ft to go onto oxygen and b) when told to go on oxygen you do it, not sit looking out of the window with a pickle up your b.m. An excellent series, and extremely well made for the era it was made, and if it didn’t have a few little mistakes in every episode I would be extremely surprised, and anyway, it gives us old farts something to gripe about. I know we aren’t supposed to exactly like General Savage, but that guy is wired so tight that I am surprised he hasn’t dropped dead of a heart 💓 attack. The AOPA guidelines on high-altitude flying require that pilots must go on supplemental oxygen if they are flying at altitudes of 12,500 feet or higher for more than 30 minutes, so I would imagine that it isn't that unsafe to wait until 10,000 feet before going on oxygen. Having only a limited supply of oxygen, I'm sure that the aircrew would not want to start using oxygen until it was really needed. I've done hikes and rock climbing at altitudes of 8,000 to 9,000 feet without being on oxygen, although I was in superb physical shape at the time and had become acclimated to being at higher altitudes.

At this early stage of the war the ME-109 [actually it was designated the BF-109] was the mainstay of the Luftwaffe's fighter squadrons. The FW-190 came much later. Both fighters had 20mm cannon so that crewman would have been blown to shreds with blood everywhere. That was the reality of aerial combat - the weapons were anti-materiel not merely anti-personnel. You don't survive being hit center mass with a Browning .50 caliber nor with the machine guns used by the Germans. Any machine gun that can destroy an engine block at 200 yards has no problem with flesh and bone.
@videomaniac108
@videomaniac108 4 года назад
When the 8th air force started operations out of England, I think the BF-109s & FW 190s were sporting 7.92 mm MG 17 cowl guns. It wasn't until at least 1943 when the BF-109G6 models came with the 13 mm MG 13 cowl guns that you had larger caliber machines guns on the planes. I think the FW-190A7 version that came out in November of 1943 upgraded its cowl guns to 13 mm MG 13s.

I was changing an engine on an S3A aircraft alone in the hanger bay when periodically, anxious to have the aircraft flying, certain superiors interrupted my work and demanding to know how much longer It would take. Then it happened again; I heard a voice behind pressing me about the engine. Being a bit aggravated, I answered with a rough voice without looking at the inquisitor, " It depends how many damn people are going to ask me how long it's going to take" I said. There was silence which aroused my curiosity. I turned around on the ladder and my eyes met with those of the Maintenance Officer, a commander - My heart jumped and I thought i was cooked. He looked at his watch and said..."good answer," then walked off to leave me to the work. I learned something about officers that day.

Piers Bridges I loved the little S3A's stationed at NAS North Island. Loved to hear them turning up early in the morning . . .WwwooouaaaaooOOOOOwistling ! I worked across the base near the sea plane hangers on two classic C130A's. Our combat tested maintenance Chief and CO affectionaltely described them as, "Approximately 1.3 million individual used parts vibrating in a barely calibratable formation." We loved the old girls but they only tolerated us . . . Our Master chief and leading CWO spent a lot of time teaching young officers and enlisted's how to scrounge for parts in the bone yards. Once they came back asking if we could haul back an old WW2 bomber because someone was trying to get rid of enough parts, they claimed, to build two or three ! They say the Skipper made a few phone calls, but had to say no . . . That was in the early 1970's.

Don Taylor, during the Vietnam war, General Crumm out of Andersen AF Base, Guam, in '67 or '68 was leading a bombing mission over Vietnam when his aircraft collided w/ another and crewmen were lost. Yes, Generals fly missions.
@jamesm.taylor6928
@jamesm.taylor6928 4 года назад
They aren't supposed to fly missions. The reason why is that most generals are in positions where they know very sensitive information that if compromised could cause great damage and or loss of life. The enemy at the very least would believe they knew such information and wouldn't stop interrogating until they believed they had everything. The communists developed a method using sensory deprivation in the sensory deprivation tanks and drugs that was so amazingly effective that not only could they get everything a person knew but they could actually program them and convert them into spies for their side, or for that matter turn them into entirely different people that believe they are that different person with completely different background etc.. Torture by comparison could never be trusted. We're they giving up real info? Or were they just spouting info they think will make the pain stop.

Of course, General Savage is the best actor in the series. At the same time, in virtually every scene he takes out a cigarette, lights it, and then snaps his bic top. That gets old.

This tactic certainly made sense, in the scheme of mass bombing attacks. I believe it led to the reduction in crew on a B-17 from ten men to nine; the bombardier and navigator's roles were combined into a position they called 'bombigator." It put one fewer man at risk in each aircraft..

The Krauts learned that the best attack on a B-17 was a frontal assault; it only took about four 20mm rounds in the cockpit to shoot the plane down. The Krauts also developed high speed passes to shoot at the B-17 formations, the B-17 gunners could only get off a couple of rounds.
@k6151960
@k6151960 8 лет назад
I believe they also put on "chins"; a forward twin 50cal mounted under the front cockpit which gave them extra help up front. And the "stinger" in the tail was their biggest fear so the Krauts looked to take it out first. But overall, the Kraut fighters had a huge advantage and their wasn't really much defense against them until the fighter escort joined the fray.

The Luftwaffe was known to use captured B-17s in original USAAF markings to try to "join up" with 8th AF bomber groups. That didn't work out so well. Everybody knows if you belong or not! They were somewhat success when employed to track the bomber formations from a safe distance like the Ju was doing. That pretty much ended when the new P-51 was able to escort the bombers to AND from their targets. Earlier P-47s had to turn back sooner, leaving the B-17s and B-24s quite vulnerable throughout their bombing run.

I'm fed up with this PC shit from All but a few politicians and groups of progressive socialist Liberals and the like. It's a pet peeve with me the way these anti-American 'Americans' are re-writing the fact to suit their own purposes and/or completely ignoring the truth.

My uncle was a ball turret gunner in the 44th Bomb Group ( B-24's) and on particular mission a P-47 was shadowing his formation. The group leader tried several times to raise the the fighter by radio, but the P-47 pilot refused to acknowledge. My uncle was then ordered to shoot the Thunderbolt down, which he did. He was credited officially with a "kill".

One trivial detail of the show that struck me: every time German fighters came in to attack, the call was "FWs at 9 o'clock" or "FWs coming in high." I don't ever recall seeing a Focke Wulf; all the clips were of Bf 109s! In the early days portrayed in the show, you'd expect the latter anyway.

Yes they would attack from the front on a half roll ,upside down, so they could dive away and expose the armored bottoms of their fighters to the B17s guns. Later model B17Gs had a chin turret below the bombardier position to add forward firepower.

I found this wonderful series I barely remember from when I was a kid and binge watched seasons 2 and 3, and am now going back to 1. Interesting that there was no oxygen used in the B-17s in seasons 2 and 3. Also, I think all the German fighters in 2 and 3 were ME-109s (although a Focke-Wulf plant and its production numbers of FW-190s was mentioned in one episode - although Focke-Wulf was mispronounced).

This episode is loosely based on an actual incident during WWII. Before the bomb run the lead bombardier Was checking the Norden Bombsite to ensure proper operation. He selected a park below to ensure the Bombsite was tracking. It was never clearly stated if there was a malfunction or if he engaged the site unintentionally, but when the indices matched the bombs released on the park below. Think a city park surrounded by nice condo's on all four sides. Well the proverbial crap hit the fan when the got back. Then it quickly died down. You see it was such a nice residential area the German's had requisitioned the surrounding homes for their use and billeted their soldiers around the park. The incident was hailed internationally as a fine example of American precision bombing.

In this show the bombs dropped about 10 seconds early. This was due to battle damage creating a short in the system. When you drop a 4000 pound load of bombs out of a B-17 wouldn't you feel the plane rise from the weight lose?
