Twelve O'Clock High had one of the best theme songs of any TV show.

Notice how much the background music sounds like the "Star Trek" ( TOS) theme song? . I have had family members hear it from another room and say " oh, is Star Trek on? " lol. I once researched the ties between TOH and Desi Lou Productions ( who did Star Trek) and found a direct connection, but Cant recall what it was now. I counted Over 17 TOH actors who later appear in Star Trek TOH! ( Have the name list somewhere) I have NOT read any of the TOH books, but wonder if they mention any production links etc.

No matter how many years go by, when you watch these programs you remember how much you enjoyed them. As a member of the public, we couldn’t stop producers or film studios from making the changes they wanted. We don’t ever forget how unsatisfied we were with those changes. We didn’t forgive them in this program, and we didn’t forgive them for Air Wolf. All we have are our memories. We know what we liked and admired, and sometimes learned to love. You can argue the movies and television recreations of historical events are illusions at best. But the acting, the writing, the photography and musical score serve to inspire our hearts and minds. We won’t forgive losing parts of programs that we cared about. You can’t stop change. But we don’t have to support some change we don’t care for and when programs lose ratings, do they ever wonder what they did to hurt themselves.

He didn't. Quinn Martin decided he wanted a younger, more conventionally handsome leading man. If I remember correctly, Burke was older than Lansing. According to Lansing, he was offered what would become the role of General Britt, but declined. If you notice, you never actually see Lansing's face when General Britt removed his picture from the command chart. It is obscured by shadows and General Britt's hand. This was because Lansing refused Martin the use of his face after being fired. Rightfully so, in my opinion. It's the height of hubris (that's not the word I'd like to use) to fire someone, then ask for permission to use their picture.

And when you share a last name with a favorite person/charactor it really enhances your interest at that age.It upsets me nowadays that so many of the cinema offerings are, and not just in MY opinion, To Damn Realistic for children and many adults. With the deminished moral compasses we are seeing today it seems to me to be purposefully de-sensitizing them.I know a few combat veterans who couldn't sit very long watching "Saving Private Ryan", for instance. This was one of the finest episodes in the series. As to the realism . . . the Germans did try to infiltrate U.S. bomber groups with captured B-17s (and 24s) but we learned very quickly how to identify them for what they were.

With great admiration of Lansing, I think the series was floundering near the end of his run and he made the choice to try for greener pastures like the movies. Unfortunately, he did not anticipate the rise of Redford, McQueen, Nicholson and Eastwood who would dominate the next decade and those characters were thrust upward from westerns. Burton was sinking though Connery, Caine and Roger Moore flourished. Timing made him yesterday's news but I think he was financially secure.

There were rumors that Quinn Martin the producer, hated Robert Lansing and couldn't wait to get rid of him. Years later, when is own career was on the wane, he admitted that firing Robert Lancing from 12 O'clock High was one of his career's biggest mistakes.
@Doug326

Rumor had it that Lansing was "hard to work with." Believe it or not, producers often fire actors who were difficult, even though they may be ratings magnets. My son used to be a child actor in a network TV series and was hired because he looked like the actress who played his mother. Unfortunately, the actress was "difficult," as my wife can attest from being on set. She was fired even though she was a popular actress. She was also blackballed. I don't think she worked in TV again.

Paul Burk was a very good actor replacing a very popular character and put in a difficult position. Robert Lansing had an edge that showed in is portrayal of General Savage and served him well. Too bad that Mr. Martin chose to not appreciate what he brought to the show and the character. The show continued to be good,.. but was missing something and may have run longer had Lansing not been replaced.

I thought I would add to this after my earlier comment. I continue to watch reruns of this show on the H & I network. Paul Burk was a good actor, but Robert Lansing was clearly the better actor, and a better fit for the role as the base commander. Quine Martin produced a lot of good to excellent TV shows but clearly made a poor decision to replace Lansing and kill his character off. A better choice in my opinion would have been to promote Savage's character to Wing commander, after being shot down, seriously injured,... but rescued, reduce his screen time, and still have him have an active presence in the show,... even occasionally flying with the group on missions for up front observations of what was going on. Doing this could have made the show more interesting, provided drama and honest conflicts between himself and Gallager.

According to TV Guide articles from the time when recasting was made, Robert Lansing turned down a "ground command " (a General Britt type role) assuming that role was actually offered...Yes, would have been good to have him stay even as a ground presence.

A reality is, that every gun of every ship would be trained on that straggler until they were sure who it was. Usually, captured ships were used for scouting and providing info for interception and gun-laying radar. I don't know if they ever used them for intruder sorties against English airbases.
@DRAGONSLAYER1220
@DRAGONSLAYER1220 2 года назад
In fact, the straggler was taken directly from USAAF & RAF reports. The Germans were known to take aircraft that crash-landed & repair them to flyable condition, mainly for intelligence gained from testing & evaluation, though some were pressed into service, the majority in German markings. A few however, WERE used in their original USAAF or RAF markings for the same reason German ground troops were sent out in American or British uniforms: to sow doubt, confusion & mistrust among the troops. The RAF reported shooting down a B-24 that opened fire on a flight of Lancasters over southwestern Germany. The numbers & tailcode from the plane matched an aircraft that was MIA. Several USAAF bomber & fighter groups also claimed to have exchanged fire with B-17's, B-24's, B-25's, P-51's and other Allied aircraft.

What on earth was ABC thinking when they replaced Robert Lansing with Paul Burke? This has to rank as one of the dumbest decisions ever made by a network. Robert Lansing simply made Twelve O' Clock High a great show! Season one with Robert Lansing leaves me with fond memories that are over 50 years old. Seasons two and three are major disappointments!

Others have likely commented ; but the change was to get a younger audience watching. Seems likely, especially with the addition of younger regular Chis Robinson as the " Bad-Boy" Komanchy. Unfortunately, between Komanchies " chip on his shoulder", self centred cowardice, and Gallaghers self doubting, spoiled-boy handling, the show became character and relationship driven more than story driven.

I always preferred Robert Lansing in the role of General Savage than Paul Burke. Lansing was always more interesting to watch and had a nice acting range. the reason behind him lasting one season was that he and the producer, Quinn Martin, didn't get along. Even before the end of the first season, Lansing was given his walking papers by Martin. Despite that, Lansing still gave great performances in the final first season episodes.
