You were really close with your interpretation. The song is about the songwriting process. Filling the pool represents writing a song, which is very slow at the beginning until they have a flow of inspiration. The chlorine represents the message within his songs, which as you know often tackles mental health struggles. Chlorine can be cleansing, but it can be toxic in large doses, so Tyler needs to be careful not to let it consume him. The creature is our buddy Ned He represents Tyler’s creativity, but also his inner critic and perfectionism. So Tyler has a love/hate relationship with him. Ned only jumps into the pool (representing the song Tyler and Josh are working on) when it’s just right. And the music transforms Ned (the antlers that grow are key in the battle against the Bishops). At the end the pool is empty because when one song is done, there’s another one to write. Tyler is drained of energy, but Ned comes alongside him to inspire the process. Tyler shows him what’s in the cup (representing the idea for the new song), but Ned turns his nose up at it. This one does have more of a somber tone, even though it starts out with more of a vibe, but I think it’s because Tyler was reflecting on the journey he had to take to write Trench. It references the long hiatus that they took after the craziness of Blurryface (when I leave don’t save my seat / I’ll be back when it’s all complete / the moment is medical). And he had to dive into some pretty dark places during the songwriting process

I've heard that Tyler doesn't start singing in this song until 17 seconds in. Chlorine is in group 17 of periodic table.

Tyler uses his pain to create, so too little and he has nothing to write about, too much will kill him. It's about his relationship with making songs, Ned representing the creativity.

A common interpretation of the video is that the little character, Ned, represents Tyler’s creativity. It can be a struggle to get the right environment set up for it to thrive, which is the pool. Notice how at the end Tyler looks exhausted and Ned is ambivalent. I’ve never worked out what is in the cup though, maybe more chlorine? In small doses chlorine can be cleansing, too much becomes harmful.

Im looking foward to see more twenty one pilots. I recommend checking out Fairly Local which is a pretty aggressive and has a really good beat. Holding on to you would be also really cool, which is way more upbeat with a lot of really cool switches

this song is about the music making process - chlorine in small doses can be cleansing, but when there's too much of it then it becomes toxic - that's how music is for Tyler - he also uses lead in the rap portion they took a hiatus from music after Blurryface to recover from their newfound stardom - that's what a lot of the lyrics are about when he says "the moment is medical" "when i leave don't save my seat - i'll be back when it's all complete"

Thanks for the reaction. This one will likely grow on you over time even if it wasn't your vibe first time 'round. There's another version worth a listen to from Tyler's Storyteller Performance. Not the same kind of switch up as The Hype was, but utterly beautiful in its own right. I'll bet you find a vibe perhaps now that you've read the comments here about how this song is about Tyler's cathartic relationship with writing music. This vid was the intro to Ned for us, who represents Tyler's creativity. There are sooo many poetic lyrics in this one, that's why we love it! So many layers with the images, too. chlorine is both cleansing and harmful. in the same way his music and creative process is cathartic and helpful for him but also he has a difficult and toxic relationship with it

Love all of your Twenty one pilots reactions and I assure you you'll eventually get tired of saying they never disappoint because everything they do is amazing. I love the second verse when he's talking about now different lives I lead a body lives on lead the last two lines may be read incorrect until said" referencing his literal pen to paper, his lyricism. Tyler Joseph is such an amazing artist as well he writes the lyrics composes and arranges the music creates the beats plays piano keyboard synthesizer drums bass ukulele accordion and guitar and also produces nearly everything they do and it's all self taught. The dude's a musical savant.
