Twenty One Pilots - Clancy | Album Review

The proctologist line in Lavish is a fancy way of saying you're being screwed by the industry.

I'm honestly very satisfied with this album. The way it blends punk, synthpop, and hip-hop works WAAAAAY better than the genre blending on most of their other albums (BF and SAI in particular). The production is fantastic, as to be expected from Paul Meany, and his help with the writing is certainly a big boost as well. Vocals, instrumentals, lore, and flow are (for the most part) top notch here. Also, Navigating is one of their best songs full stop. It's a high 8/10 for me, and my 2nd favourite album from the duo so far (behind Trench, of course)

This album had me hooked. There were moments that felt like classic TOP, and other moments that felt competely fresh. I loved how they blended their old and new sounds. It was a wonderful direction for them to go in!

I think that the reason this album works is because it’s not trying to be Trench 2.0. It’s more upbeat, not as lore heavy, and breaks new musical ground for the band so that it sounds like its own thing. I didn’t hate SAI like most, and honestly I’m happy for that chapter in their discography, but Clancy is definitely a huge improvement.

This album is excellent. 8.5/10 for me

I don't think anything will beat Trench for me, but this was just a fraction of a notch below it in my book. I absolutely can't get enough of this album!! 😍

Hey Jon. I've been a fan of yours for close to a decade now (how is that possible) and I am an obsessive twenty one pilots fan. I have gained so much value in connecting with your reviews throughout the entire lore cycle as you are my favorite music critic. Even though we don't always agree, I admire how much care you put into your tøp reviews. And while your opinion does not and should not affect mine, it was SO satisfying to hear Trench bumped up to a 5 and our agreement on a 4 for Clancy. Much love. It was great to follow the cycle with you.

I think something that really helps Clancy is not so much "callbacks" to old albums, but sort of revisiting and modernising old songwriting styles. The blend of different genres really feels like more of a blurryface 2.0 than a trench 2.0, and even though nothing from them could pass trench for me, this album is certainly very special to me and I'd argue one of their best works total.

This album was perfect for my music taste. Absolutely loved this project. Still digesting it but its looking like this will be one I spin for years to come like Trench and Vessel before it

My take: there's always one song in top's album that tyler just want to flex, and the song doesn't need to have anything to do with their concept. Blurryface: Message Man, Trench: Pet Cheetah, Scaled and Icy: The Outside and now, Clancy: Lavish.

I guess it’s a solid 8, liked every songs, no instant skip for me and more than a couple hits from the first listening. Definitely wasn’t expecting to like this so much. Kudos Tyler and Josh.

Navigating and Next Semester are also my two favorites! There are a couple growers on this album but overall I thought it was awesome

I don’t give a fuck about the lore, but the tunes are banging.

what an insane bounce back from Scaled and Icy! it's not on the same level as Trench and Blurryface for me, but i can see it possibly overtaking Vessel after repeated listens 😁

I like the Single Version more than Jenna’s Version, but both are good.

I actually like the deepcuts more than the singles. Solid 4/5

It’s a grower for me. I don’t love it yet, but I can see myself loving it in the near future. It definitely has its highlights and there’s a real likability to the whole thing especially in the music videos where it’s pretty much just two best friends having fun on camera.

I really enjoyed watching the livestream for this album and seeing them do a music video for each song and I like that not every song is lore heavy. I would give this album a 3.5/5

It was so enjoyable to view the livestream and almost every song was great. It’s a solid 9.0 for me.

Yeah maan, we are so baack, was little sceptical about the album but it really blew me away how good it is

Just listened to the album start to finish, big fan! Huge fan of Next Semester, Vignette, Navigating and At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb. Also love that Trench now has a 10/10 rating, it’s one of my favourite albums of all time.

Album is a solid 7/10 for me and I expect it to grow on me even more. Really great return to form for them even if it doesn’t match Trench OG’s heights, which I agree is a 10/10 classic at this point.

In my opinion, they haven’t put out a bad album yet! I was confused by Scaled & Icy at first, but I ended up coming back and enjoying it more. I started off here with Clancy confused as well, but at 2nd listen I could really feel it. Very solid record and definitely not as good as Trench, but it’s close

To anyone, listen to this album in a car and it's even better. My least favourite by far is snap back, although the variation on the track makes it a win still.

Love Clancy, one of my favorite albums so far from this year. A big step up from Scaled and Icy. Also as someone who’s been following the lore, it’s really cool. The music videos were fun to watch. I’m really enjoying this era and I think they absolutely killed it on the album!

I love this whole album. I’m a huge trench fan and I’m just so glad we’re back to something a bit grittier than SAI. I will follow Tyler to the ends of the earth..so I’m here for the long haul no matter what he wants to create. I loved Lavish and I enjoyed the lyrics being less serious and more goofy. The proctologist lyric made me laugh my butt off. I’m a registered dietitian so I talk to people about that kind of stuff all the time. 😅 I can’t pick a favorites song so far. Maybe Routines in the Night.

TOP I'd say is a rare band that honestly never really misses. This isn't my fav album by them but it's still very good. I just remember Trench and hearing songs like Jumpsuit, Nico, and Pet Cheetah and being hooked on that album for awhile. While this album doesn't give me the effect a few songs like Routines, Indigo, and even Oldies Station (yeah it's one of my fav on the album) are really good. Routines honestly might be one of my fav songs by them. TOP asa whole makes very good meaningfully fun music, the way they engage with fans and how they can turn such depressing music into happy upbeat music is a great way to lure in a fan base. Tyler is also a very underrated musician imo. They take their time and make sure the album is perfect, they don't throw out songs just for the radio (outside maybe Saturday haha). I give the album a solid 7.8/10. Blurry face imo is their best album and is a solid 10/10 album. Just having to wait another 3 years is the annoying part as they never even give songs along the way.

Haven't gotten around to checking this album yet, but this review definitely has me excited to check it out! Well, okay I'll curb my enthusiasm a tad because opinions always differ lol but I'm glad it's not S&I level.

I've been listening to them since Blurryface, have seen them live twice (which is a lot for where I live), and fell off listening to them (mostly because of Scaled & Icy). The more I listen to this album, the more I like it; it's clear that it's them, it has parts of the sound I fell in love with while also changing some stuff up (for better or worse). I'm seeing them live once more in January and I can't wait to listen and sing along to these tracks live ❤️💛

Singles didn’t win me over at first, but altogether they really hit different. A really great bounce back from the duo. But Lavish… yeah I don’t get it.

I truly love this album and I’m still catching up to the lore so I’m glad not everything was too complicated on this one and music wise I love the direction of this record there were so many different genres

This was very solid. im glad its not a trench 2 because i think that sort of direct continuation thing may have inhibited them creatively, im glad theres so much variety here from song to song. Not one song really sounds the same. And i like how the songs stand out as songs and not being overly lore heavy, I love how much of a really nice flow thia album does have. Id say its pretty good.

I honestly love the new TOP album. It might even be my album of the year because of how fun it is. I feel like music this year has been slow and boring and definitely needed a kick in the rear.

oldies station resonates with me, especially the bridge but i’ve grown to love the whole song. it’s just so nice

This album really made me happy. I love this new sound for them and a nice closure to Dema and Clancy. 9/10. Next Semester is one of their best songs to date

Clancy is already my favorite album by them. I didn't listen to them since 2017 until I heard Next Semester, and I was instantly reeled back in. I wasn't a super big fan of any other albums except Blurryface, and I really don't know SAI or Trench. The only snoozers (still good) on here were Midwest Indigo and Oldies Station. Personal favorites - Next Semester, Vignette, Lavish, Snap Back.

As someone who loved trench, wasn’t really feeling this one. I’m glad to hear other people enjoyed it, though!

I think personally its in top 3, not sure which spot it exactly takes but it mixes scaled and icy with trench and some older sounding 21 pilots. 9/10 for me easily. This album was definitely one where i kinda fell in love with it the first time listening and then the 2nd time definitely confirmed it.

I still like Trench better but this pleased me over their last album. I didn't like Overcompensate at first but liked it on the second listen. I'm really loving Snap Back and Vignette. Scaled and Icy just didnt do it for me except maybe four or five songs. This year has been a great year for music like last year imo.

Going into Clancy, I thought that it was either gonna be really good or really bad. And thankfully, it was the former. It really made me remember why I got into TØP in the first place, as someone who’s felt like they’ve slowly been outgrowing them. And while the ending of the album made me kinda confused, it doesn’t detract from the rest of the album. I still think Trench was better, but Clancy is a close second.

I actually didn't like scaled and Icey at first but it's probably my overall favorite album but still need to listen to Clancey more and really, they are all great.

Okay but can we acknowledge the very MGMT like vibes that lavish has and I kinda thought back to tracks on Oracular Spectacular. An I could not help but think that might have been the vibe that was being shot for. However Next Semester remains my favorite track it punched me emotionally in the best way. However the album as a whole feels like it flows so strongly together. I genuinely love this return to form for Twenty One Pilots.

Been a huge fan of twenty one pilots ever since Trench was released and even though this album wasn't too lore heavy, I would say this is a close second in the best album I've heard from the band (first best being Trench ofc). It was very enjoyable listening to these songs and a fun album to listen to entirely. Navigating, At The Risk of Feeling Dumb, and Backslide have to be my favorite songs from this album. Clancy overall is a solid 8/10 for me :D

I watched you a lot in 2015-2017 Dude your voice sounds so different!

Feels like a combo of Vessel and Trench for me. Out of the two albums that dropped today (this and BMTH's new album) I gotta say this is much stronger. Can't wait for Paul Meany's solo album he's confirmed is dropping later this year.

YES!!! Thank you for this review it was amazing. Finally someone that gets it. Clancy's not as good as Trench and it doesn't want to be, but it does give a respectable fight against it. At least that's how I feel about it. For sure Next Semester and Navigating are my favs. Tho Routines In The Night is a solid 3rd place. I love Tyler's vocal performance and bass playing on the 1st 2 as well as Josh's killer drumming. Routines is just extremely catchy. Vigenette has also one of my fav intrumentation and performance from Tyler. I do really enjoy Overcompensate. I'm not sure if it's as good as some others but I did learn all the words pretty quickly. Backslide and At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb weren't my favs at 1st but those are the 2 that had been stuck in my head the most as much as I hate to say it (they're great just not tøp tier). And yes the outro on Backslide should've been longer. It reminded me of Morph, which actually lets the production shine through. Midwest Indigo is fun as well. I wished it had a bit more of a punch to it but still a strong moment on the album. The Craving is trully the best love song Tyler has ever made and I do preffer Jenna's version. It gave me chills (it's better at getting the sentiment across my fav love song's actually Tear In My Heart). The rest of the tunes are bit forgettable sadly except for Lavish with its goofy and careless vibe and of course Paladine Strait, which is one of my fav endings out of any album. Clancy is miles ahead from SAI and I don't even dislike that album as much as people do. It's not Trench either but there's trully not a bad song on here. A couple of snoozers but mostly solid. I'll give it an 8/10 and I'm so glad you upped Trench to a 10 cause for me it's also perfect. I really came to that conclusion when I revisited it a few months ago and dove deeper into the lore, too. Loved the review and I'm def looking forward to that ranking episode. Love the channel and have a great day John!

I’ve been with them since 2013 and yes 😂 had it pretty much figured out!!! Not disappointed at all Trench will forever be their masterpiece as of now, but Clancy is really close. Lore or not every single song slaps

The album to me sounds very much like an album in 2024. Super modern if you know what I mean. Pretty much the whole album is a vibe and I catch myself dancing around to it.

Have you heard RM's album 'Right Place Wrong Person' The album with 11 songs that careen from hip-hop to jazz to punk to R&B to Fela Kuty-styled Afrobeats, this album comes out at the end of May and I guarantee you won't be disappointed

Thank you for the review, it actually made me give Snapback a second chance (I kinda hated it at the first listen), and if turned out to be a nice catchy tune. I'm curious what you think of the moments with overproduced vocals on some tracks (RITNT, ATOFD and Snapback come to mind first)? They don't let me enjoy those songs as much as I could have, and that's my only gripe with the overally good album (or is that the mix? I dunno)

Some songs are definitely hard to listen to because of the singing and/or immaturity of the lyrics. It's a 3/5 for me

Glad Twenty one pilots came back with an visceral and gut punching record similar to, Blurryface & Trench. Especially on songs such as Vinette, Navigating, Snapback. Although there are a few cringing lyrics but the production, vocal tone and instrumentation is unbelievably dope.

I love this album but I’m missing some slower emotional songs like goner. But you hear the improvement in they music. 8 out of 10

loved your thoughts only time i disagreed with you was oldies station and lavish i felt that the meaning oldies station is what really makes it good not much the music and lavish is supposed to be dumb thats the fun of it. Thanks for making this video it was well made

Good lord! So weird how subjective opinion is different among listeners… Lavish is just about my favorite song on Clancy and I love the zany lyrics!!!
