Tyler mentioned in an interview that he was talking about his wife in this song because his grandfather already had some dementia by the time they started dating and didn’t get to know the real person he was.
I’ve listened to this song many many times but I have to admit ...watching this video brought a little tear to my eyes at the end with your summary. Tyler is a deep guy who has meaningful things to say...and a great message. Agghhhh, so refreshing in the music world.
He has said in interviews none of his grandparents were very religious, that his parents 'discovered' religion in college. I was lucky enough to see this played the 1st time I saw them. According to the setlist website, they have only played it live 32 times in a 100+ show tour.
Wow for real? I wonder what is the decided factor on whether or not they will play the song. Do they decide beforehand or is it a spur of the moment kind of song?
@@SuffiReax not sure his reasoning. According to the website, it looks like they started playing it in early May, and stopped in late June. For the most part they seem to keep the same setlist just sometimes switching a few songs in or out. It differed from leg to leg somewhat, and there were a few other noticeable differences from the time I saw them in May to the final North American leg last fall.
Yeah, the baby was not born yet when he wrote this song, but I'm sure it would apply after the fact. I thought that maybe, too, he may have started writing it when he was still alive and just kept it the same? I have had grandparents have dementia/ Alzheimer's and it is so hard to go see them when they don't know who you are. They might know that they should know you, but can't quite place you. I lost my grandma in April to Covid. Her dementia was getting really bad. I had not visited her since January. I am really glad I did. I think of her when I listen to this song.
My dad had brain cancer and I watched die and forget everything slowly over a years time. It was hard to visit at rehab because he wasn't the dad I had the 16 years I spent with him before hand. Miss him a ton. So yea this song means a lot to me too
I think the upbeat music with sad lyrics is something kinda neat that T.O.P. does. It makes me think that it goes along with their masks and two faces things. The happy upbeat music is one face, that draws you in, gets you bopping along, as you put it. Gets the passersby into the music....Then as you listen more and more, you begin to pay more attention to the lyrics, and begin to see the reality beneath. The second face. The pain, the struggles, the insecurities. I can't remember who it was, but there was also another reactor that also put it in a way I kinda liked...When you're feeling good, you can listen for the music, and when you're feeling low, you can listen for the lyrics.
I found this playlist last night, and I am LOVING IT!!! Can't wait to continue to see how much more you figure out about the boys and their music. Welcome to the clique fren!!!! 💛||-//
Actually, Tyler confirmed in this interview that he was talking about his wife: www.nme.com/big-reads/twenty-one-pilots-interview-nme-big-read-2455816 Although, of course, there could always be multiple meanings.
Yes, Alzheimer’s is horrible. My Grandmother has it and had to go into a nursing home. She began packing and hiding a bag and hiding it so she could sneak away and going “home.” It was hard going to visit her… She met my daughter when 9 months old and lit up like Christmas tree. She loved babies.
Yes my grandmother was very similar. Stopped recognizing her own kids and then didn't even recognize her own room sometimes and would try leaving saying she wanted to go home. It was very sad.
Great reaction as always! If you want a few more artists to react to, might I suggest: Jon Bellion, AJR, Quinn XCII, Lorde, half•alive, Finneas, Witt Lowry, Tom MacDonald, Imagine Dragons, Melanie Martinez.
