Good rule of thumb for these guys is to check for the Big 3 to understand a song. 1.Faith and their back and forths with God. 2.Depression/anxiety/insecurity and going through bouts of suicidal thoughts. 3.Family and fans. It’s not 100%, but one of those will get you started on the right track. This one is straight up about glorifying suicide and how it can almost be made to be appealing. Neon signs are inviting, like “open” signs. “They call for my bones”. And people who take their life sometimes use it as a statement, an act of vengeance to hurt someone else. Instead of learning from that persons intended message, let’s look to the grandparents and celebrate how they overcame their issues and have lived long meaningful lives. Glad you finally got to this one D. The more you play it, the more special it’ll get for you.

This song is essentially about the glorification of suicide and for people to consider the impact of their actions and words on others. They also want to encourage people to seek help for whatever mental illness they're dealing with before they find an early grave as a better optional way to deal with that illness

@@DRichOfficialTyler is specifically addressing celebrity suicide to some degree in this song (“How could he go if he’s got everything, I’ll mourn for a kid but won’t cry for a king”). I think that’s why you caught on to the theme of fame. But it’s written to be a message for how our society looks at suicide in general. Much of that comes from the way we idolize celebrities who have committed suicide, though - it leaves a message to those who are struggling that it might be an easy way out of their struggles.

Its also about the literal neon gravestones the bishops are creating for the "glorious gone" or those who have killed themselves for the sake of vialism which is a sort of possession power the bishops have. In the video we see the pattern in which they are placed around the outside of dema spinning.

Tyler speaking up against un-aliving yourself. How sometimes this action is glorified especially amongst celebrities. Other times it’s used as a weapon. The part where he say “ promise me this if I loose to myself you won’t mourn a day and you’ll move on to someone else” always gets me😢

I always felt Chester Bennington was in mind with this song. Considering what a huge fan of top chester was. Chester fought depression his whole life and linkin parks album had a lot of hate. I recall someone saying that’s not linkin park just the Chester show. Comments like that really bothered Chester too. Then one of his best friends opted out, Chris Cornell.. and then we lost chester. After Chester passed alll the sudden everyone was loving the album and Chester. Like the song says “ they would host and post a celebration “ beautiful and deep song

As someone that struggles with thoughts of the big S, I find the allusions to it fairly obvious. But I can see how someone might not see it, or get a different meaning out of it. Because that's how TØP is. You can take whatever meaning speaks to you from their songs regardless of whether it's the intended meaning or not.

I saw a video with Tyler talking about how this was a song he had to make a decision on if he was going to keep this song on the album before the cover was released or not. People working with him were worried that people would take the meaning of the song the wrong way, and they were even more worried that it would end his career. So they told him that he had to make a decision to cut or leave the song the day before the cover would be released. And Tyler ultimately decided that the subject on the song was too important to leave out of the album. And now, it's one of the most beloved and emotional songs he has ever written. The sure power in the message. That ultimately, the world needs to stop glorifying suicide.

You know Twenty One Pilots enough to know that one listen is never enough. lol. This song is about the glorification of taking your own life. Neon lights are normally used to grab attention, so neon gravestones will grab attention for the wrong reason. This song has brought me to tears hearing Tyler's emotional vocals. it is, as Tyler often does, a song of hope and positivity to stay strong.

it is also because dema is lightened by neon gravestones, which will compell more citizens to want to become glorified, hence why dema has always grey skies.

this song is about not glorifying suicide - and specifically about how celebrities can become more famous after death because everyone gives so much attention after a person commits that act - his message is to appreciate life and people who have made it through life you can see in the Nico and the Niners video the bishops are making the Neon Gravestones - and in Overcompensate, right before the beat drops you are overlooking all the Neon Gravestones

I feel like it’s about all these young people like lil peep, juice world, etc who were gone early and they hold their name high after instead of talking about why their gone so early, almost like saying if you did the same your name would be famous forever when that shouldn't be an option.

With TOP, you can look at many of their songs as being calls against self-harm, against doing yourself in. When you know that’s a recurring theme, it helps when it’s not stated directly.

The music video reminds me of spot lights. Tyler is (atleast in my interpertation) that people glorify when famous people commit suicide thus giving them a "Neon gravestone" and offering them a early way out of life.

"It" is basically suicide and the ideation of it and basically saying like the urge is calling for me but i cant let it get to me, i esspecially like the end very blunt like you should glorify living long not having an earlier grave

I can understand how it might be harder for some people to understand but thats ok. Maybe because im familiar with these concepts, this song is basically about un-aliving oneself and the glorification of it, especially when it comes to celebrities

How many albums did Michael Jackson sell after he died? "Go out with a bang, they will know my name" Someone I watched recently made a nice comment - he said that despite all the hate Eminem gets today, the day he dies, he will be praised to high heavens by everybody and their grandma.

Yes it's another level of fame, post life, that is too much glorified in the press following celebrity. To spotlight their personal downfall into depression, addiction just for press, commentary and focus stealing away from their successes and having that shine more that what they did.

So….yeah. You’re wrong but that’s ok. Most people need lots of listens to get it. “If I lose to myself….”. Do t over complicate it, one of Tyler’s lines that just is.
