While some of this is hyperbole or modified for comedic sake, most of it is actually quite accurate to what actually happened. If you watch the NoClip documentary Yoshida actually talks about the decision to nuke 1.0 and how that happened. Basically he took three months after he was brought on the project to figure out what plan of action he wanted to take going forward and came back to the board (which he was not on at the time) with two options - keep 1.0 running and hope for the best, or build a completely new game while maintaining and patching 1.0 with an eye to relaunching the game. Fortunately the board were willing to trust YoshiP with the latter option. Now, YoshiP is the head of SE's Creative Business Unit 3 and is a member of the board of directors. He gets a LOT of latitude with his projects because he literally did save the company after the 1.0 debacle absolutely tanked SE's stock, and he's known for his consistency and ability to produce quality games.

They really pulled off something huge with this game... wow. I haven't watched the NoClip documentary yet but it's at the top of my list to react to!! Now that my AC is fixed and things have settled on my end, I can get back into the swing of content!

@@twerkules2016 If you plan to react to the NoClip documentary live, you're definitely going to want to either break it up into three different reacts (one for each video), or specifically schedule a stream for it, since the entire thing is about two hours long across three videos. Adding in reactions, you'll easily be looking at 3+ hours. Figured I'd mention the runtime so you don't get caught off-guard by how long it is.

I appreciate that recommendation!!! Definitely plan on breaking it all up by parts. Not sure if someone would want to watch a 3 hour video of me reacting hahahaha not sure if I could stay engaged that entire time either. I am pretty excited to watch though! I really enjoy learning so much about the history of this game, it's so unique!

This makes so much sense now. I felt like it was strange how FF14 felt and played like FF11 with better graphics but Yoshi P really turned it around. Like how in DBZ, when a saiyan gets their ass kicked, they come back even stronger than before.

YES!! Love the DBZ reference! And the accuracy!!!

Even if you were fine with or enjoyed 1.0 and 1.x's design decisions, there were at least three major issues it all came down to. 1: The Crystal Tools engine. It made FF13 a very pretty tech demo by animating a few characters and objects on screen with obscene detail, but was the exact opposite of what you would want to use to run an mmo with many characters and assets on a large scale. 2: The servers. The servers were down so often that it felt like a cryptid sighting to see the game function for more than a few minutes at a time, to the point Squenix stopped charging a subscription for the game for months until Yoshi-P's little project was fully under way. 3: Optimization, or a complete lack thereof. Everyone brings up the flower pots, but those are a symptom of the real problem more than the actual cause. When you're designing assets for a video game, you try to shave as many polygons, vertices, and texture memory as you can get away with for the sake of rendering speed and memory limits. These designers did NONE of that and just kept pumping pointless detail into everything like they were making a movie. Players may not be joking when they say that the game's own servers couldn't run FF14 1.0.

Yeah that is... just such a bad infrastructure and way to do things. They really pulled off something incredible to turn this game around!!

Me who play FF14, GW2, WoW (Dragonflight when playing as a Dracythr) all three of these all had been my favorites!

Some context: FFXI is also a MMO (Somehow, still going, they literally updated it earlier this year), XIII is....divisive in the fanbase. That end joke with the Versus XIII becoming XV is that Versus XIII was taking so long, the idea of expanded the XIII universe with other games was straight up dead at the point, but there had been a ton of hype around it, so they still wanted to publish it. It's initial release is about as bad as XIV 1.0's, and they further pissed off fans by having chunks of the game released as DLC (since the game was straight up unfinished). I believe the same person has a video about that, but could be wrong.
@twerkules2016
@twerkules2016 Год назад
Oh my… incredible that XI is still going??? That’s so wild. And then another rough go with XIII… that sounds brutal to have been a fan at that point with all the DLCs… I’ll see if they have the video and add it to the list to watch!!

@@twerkules2016 Yeah, it's weird to consider that FF11 has been running longer than WoW. As for FF13, it's divisive because it LOOKS beautiful, but the gameplay is kind of off. The complaints about linearity can mostly be ignored, because the same people that complain about that also praise FF10 for the same thing. If FF13 had been FF12, there's likely have been many, many fewer complaints about linearity, because FF12 was a single player game that was almost as wide open as ARR is, so the linearity of FF13 stands out even more against it.
@twerkules2016

@@SashaTheQwaser FF11 is older than WoW??? And it's still catching updates?? That in itself is impressive lol Ahhhhh that's so interesting! I only have heard things about FF7, FF10, and FF14 over the years. Very interesting to hear about the others!!

@@twerkules2016yeah, it got kind of overshadowed when WoW came out, but at the same time was also one of the first MMo's to be on a console, cause it also got a PS2 release. Along with an entire HDD attachment to store the game, AND a modem attachment.
@twerkules2016

some context for other vatshit things hsppenkng at square sround this time: crystal tools was designed for XIII and they were going to do a whole subseries with it including a game called Versus XIII by the creator of Kingdom hearts (that actually garnered way mire hype thsn regular XIII) but then XIII came out and western audiences hated it but japanese audiences loved it so it got not one but two sequels, Meanwhile Versus languished in development hell for years due to Square mismanagement which they blamed on Nomura (even though they made him juggle it and Kingdom hearts). Finally they took it away from Nomura, scrapped most of his story ideas that people were hyped about, amd slapped the Final Fantasy XV label on it. What was going to be an epic Action RPG with a modern game if thrones-esque story got turned into a road trip simulator with literal hold X to win combat (that's witnout like accessibilith settings turned on or anything) and all the important storytelling completely removed and told in supplemental material. Like if you just play vanilla XV you do not have enough info to know whats going on.

I hate that so much. The executives gotta realize you can’t overload the creatives and you gotta give them the time and space be creative! That’s so unfortunate to hear. I appreciate the context!!

Indeed, to get the 'full' experience you need to get the version with ALL the extra DLC added to it. And for the 'best' experience you take a break from the main game to do the different character DLCs when they leave the party for a short wile to get the "What happened while they were gone" perspective so that their actions and statements when they DO return make sense... And they actually put a super special alternative ending behind one of those DLCs.

2:21 --- Well, it was that... among others ^^° All in all, they seriously underestimated the project and had no idea about the current MMO market and their competition. Among others.

@@twerkules2016 To build on the original comment: Yoshida-san made the entire team sit down and spend hours playing MMO's including World of Warcraft , since he was a huge fan of WoW and everquest at the time. He also sees other mmos as variety rather than competition! The best outline of this was after the release of Endwalker in 2021, maybe a month later, Yoshi-P and the dev team told players to remember to take breaks and if they cant justify the sub, to play other MMOs and come back when they get the itch. Soken, the lead composer is kind of a hero in peoples eyes too, not only does he make amazing music every expansion but after Yoshi-sans speech about breaking the game down and starting from scratch, its reported that Soken fist pumped the air and said "Yea! lets do this!" since that moment the two became very close fast friends, along with Koji fox , who we like to blame for all of the quests having Pun names, since he worked on the majority of the localization into english. Now going way beyond the original comment! These friends and members of the dev team formed an official band called The Primals, they play songs live, sometimes at fanfest, sometimes in smaller venues all of them from the games, Koji also travels to panels with soken, who has surprisingly good english!

First off, Yoshi-P knows what's up to look at other MMOs as variety!! The more I hear about him the more I appreciate his view of it all and his approach! I'm glad he was given his chance to revive this game. Soken deserves so much credit for his talent here! I've come to appreciate video game music so much more these last few years and I've been struck by the music so much already in ARR. He's done amazing so far and I can't wait to see what the expansions are like! And the formed a band??? That's so freaking cool!!! Okay yeah I hope I can see them play some day!!!
