70s flare jeans came back in the 90s because designers who were kids in the 70s were nostalgic for them. sometimes fashion trends can be decided by the nostalgia of designers. this can lead to a cultural and/or fashion "echo" in trends. for example i get nostalgic when i watch bewitched or the andy griffith show because it was on tv when i was a kid because it was on tv when a tv program director was a kid. in the late 80s early 90s there was a kind of 1955 to 1965 nostalgia. the killers hit it big in 2005 signaling a wave in music that echoed nostalgia for the 1985 post punk music scene. at the time termed "new wave". the 1995 to 2005 era was the time that big pants came back. the trends seem to arrive in 20 year chunks so this puts us at the half way point of the 1995 -2005 revival. if my calculations are correct this puts Twice close to approximating the Spice girls. their non western cultural origins could give them a longer life, but in the end we are all human, the needs of cultural echos be damned.
