I don't see many people talk about how when you first turn into the wolf this is the first song the hero of time teaches you. He's trying to heal the twilight curse. Through that lens, the fact that it doesn't work just feels tragic.
All Links are "The Hero Chosen by the Gods" But they all have their own title, such as: Minish cap: Hero of the Minish Four Swords: hero of the Four Sword Ocarina of Time/Majora´s Mask: Hero of Time Wind Waker: Hero of Winds Spirit Tracks: Hero of Spirits Twilight Princess: Hero of Twilight A Link to the Past: Hero of Legend The Legend of Zelda/The Adventure of Link: Hero of Hyrule
I saw the comment regauridng how the Song of Healing being used first may have meaning with how Link is currently cursed, but I think theres a neat little extra layer to it if you look into how the song of healing is used in Majora's Mask. In Majora's Mask the song doesn't remove curses, nor does it heal in traditional sense. What it does is it helps spirits accept their death and move on. It's a harsher form of healing, as it doesn't heal the body but rather the soul so spirits can rest in peace. This is how it "heals" link of the deku curse, by allowing the spirit possessing his form to pass on. It's also how the other transformation masks are acquired, by helping the dead accept their deaths and pass on their unresolved burdens to Link to solve them in their stead. This song might not be playing for TP link, but rather for the Hero of Time, a soul still tied to the earth due to regrets. Regrets that you help satisfy and ultimately help the spirit move on by convincing him that you are now strong enough to take over the burden of the hero.
@@chronic-joker That is a good point, but at the same time we see that the Song of Healing is completely unable to remove any other curse in the game, with the Song of Storms instead being used to do so. We see this with Sharp who will even comment that the Song of Healing will no longer work on him due to his curse, we see it unable to remove the blue bubble curse that the song of storms can get rid of. Considering the location of Ikana being pretty much fully centered around lingering spirits with regrets, it's very likely that the Ghibdo "curse" was potentially of a possession. The Ghibdo themselves in the well where he got the affliction seem to also be spirits with regrets, not just cursed beings, as they immediately pass on when you fulfill their regrets. This lines up with what Pamela's father mentions about spirits being trapped in the well. This also seems to be evident in the Ghibdos around the music box house asking for their "friend" inside, indicating that Pamela's father might have been possessed by a spirit from the well which the other Ghibdo then sought to reclaim. Granted, this is just a theory on my part as Pamela's condition is never fully explained or refereed to as one thing or the other. But it does line up similarly to how the other masks are formed and used. In every other case the Song of Healing is effective when used on a spirit with regrets (which all the Ghibdo from the well have) and that after the mask is passed on to link, it is then used to help resolve said regrets that the spirit passed on to Link, with the mask being used to help the other spirits of the well pass on.
For a second I forgot this was in the game and thought it was fan made and thought to myself "Goddamn this sounds just like it was in Twilight Princess" and then remembered the howling stone and felt stupid.
This further proves that Majora's Mask is not a symbolic telling of either Link's depression or death. It did happen, and the scars remain. But they can indeed be healed.
I like to think the events of Majora's Mask symbolize Link's feelings of sadness during Ocarina of Time. Mnay of the events that reflects those which happen in Ocarina like how the Deku people blaming a monkey for the kidnapping of the Deku Princess reflects Link being accused of killing the Deku Tree by the Kokiri.
@@andreavasquez4355 And perhaps Maikau being dead and not there for Lulu was Link feeling guilty for not keeping his promise to Ruto? Maybe, though I don't believe the events of Majoras Mask are just Link in purgatory one bit. If he had died when he was that young, why would he look older and be dressed in armor as the hero's shade?
@@hylianchampion8867 I like to think Termina was made to reflect Link's feelings and to show that both him and Skull Kid both share a feeling of loneliness.
This very song, is enough to prove that the memories of Termina carried through with link, and that it actually happened. Enough to prove it to myself atleast.
@aneurysmrupture No? How would skullkid have a history of being in termina? How would the mailman have a lineage if he stopped existing? If they stop existing after Majora is stopped, then how does the game's credits make any sense?
@aneurysmrupture Fair enough, it's so annoying when Hyrule Historia tries to retcon things to make the timeline make more sense, only to make it more stupid imo.
@aneurysmrupture Nah you were good. Tone mostly lost in YT comments. I just really dislike that decisions because it kind of undermines skullkid's arc.
That fact that Time tried teaching you this one first breaks my heart. Whatever form he takes, he just wants to stop people’s pain and help them heal. The worst part is, he can’t do that for you, not really. You have to do it yourself, but he’s always there for you to help you however he can
I still get shivers from this song... When I first played Twilight Princess, I didn't have Majora's Mask or Ocarina of time. So initially, the significance of this song being there was lost on me. Eventually, I got Majora's Mask, and then Ocarina of Time. I don't really get the theories of Majora's Mask and the Ben Drowned stuff just seems weird, but I still genuinely love this song and game. On top of that, realising Queen Ruto's theme was the Serenade of Water brought me to tears all over again when I replayed and got to the part where you follow the Queen's ghost. Say what you will about this game or that game and what was better or what was worse.. but all three games have a special place in my heart now.
When taken as a trilogy in the child timeline, all three games enhance each other. They share themes of healing others, the dangers of power, the flow of time, and taking responsibility. Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess are the sequel/spiritual sequel to Ocarina of Time, so it's only natural to include them as a through line one after the other. The Hyrule Historia would later confirm a blood relation between Ocarina and Twilight Link, so the games should be paired on those grounds as well.
nice. I played ocarina of time first, then twilight princess years later, then majora's mask. I loved all the OOT references in TP. Have you played the other games btw? Every Zelda game EXCEPT BOTW has that same magic to it and they're all special in their own way. I hated botw but I strongly recommend all the others if you enjoyed TP OOT and MM.
@@yourmum69_420 I actually really like breath of the wild. I know it breaks series conventions sometimes for the worse but it is a Zelda game for those who haven’t experienced Zelda before. I’ve played oot and mm and whilst those are spectacular games, I think I still prefer botw. I think a way it makes up for taking away some of the former series tropes is by sneaking in plenty of careful references. But it’s your opinion and that’s fine 😀
When you follow Queen Ruto, she leads you to Ocarina of Times King Zoras grave. The game was made perfectly correct. It had its own story, but also throwbacks to OOT/MM. Its a solid 10/10 and in my top 3 favourite zelda games 🙌
I once met a homeless man in my town when i was in highschool 12 years ago and he was about the age of 37. He never begged for money or whatsoever, he was the kind of man who would look out for bystanders who get into trouble. ( I live in a dangerous city ) I gave him $20 Everytime I saw him and humbly would accept it tho he's told me money has no value of life. I asked him how do you find kindness to life in this shitty town? He told me that everyday he would have the song of healing in his head to get him through. He passed away around this time 6 years ago. Ironically he did look like Jesus but Everytime I hear this, I think of him and his kindred soul.
I find the Song of Healing, although simple, very powerful and moving and I don’t understand why it’s hardly ever referenced in subsequent Zelda games. I hope that the musical score in Tears of the Kingdom is an improvement from Breath of the Wild and that maybe we can see this theme return in an important way some how considering the darker themes this second game will seemingly have.
Yeah, music has always been such an important part of Zelda games, both in-universe and as a player. It was a shame half of the time spent playing BotW was basically just the occasional few piano key presses in the background.
Honestly, from what we were told, the musical tone of Breath of the Wild was fully on purpose to immerse us into the game proper, most of the sound would would hear in game would be diegetic music, things that Link himself would hear, but town/battle/area music would be non-diegetic, only we would hear it, and honestly the fact most of BotW was Diegetic shows this isn't a prosperous Hyrule like all the games prior, this is a Hyrule after a century of constant battle and fear.
@@literallyunfunny On its own it's probably the best Zelda soundtrack ever made. The boss themes are glorious, the town themes are beautiful, and character themes are just superb. However, in game it's a little lacking. I know they wanted to be immersive but anything besides hearing the same 6 piano jingles would have been great. Hope Tears of the Kingdom improves on this
@@luksmuk Which really hurts for some reason. I don’t like the idea that The Hero of Twilight has been dead for so long that there isn’t any trace of his existence left.
@vHerman What I’m saying is that Breath Of The Wild takes place tens of thousands-if not hundreds of thousands of years after Twilight Princess. The Hero of Twilight’s existence can no longer be felt in the world: his hometown has long since decayed away; Hyrule is no longer the same place as it was when he traveled it, the geography changing over the millennia; everyone he ever knew is dead; the world itself barely even remembers that he saved it. He’s gone, and has been for a long, long time, but the world keeps going without him or his influence. And it’s oddly saddening to know that Hyrule keeps going when everything that we know about it has changed.
The Hero of Time's life is a tragic tale. But by passing on his combat knowledge to his descendant that also defeats Ganondorf, The Hero of Time is redeemed and can finally lay in peace.
@@ZladnylOk, although it is not clear what happened to the Hero of Time, I can assure you something: it did not have a happy ending. Because he was returned to the past at the end of Ocarina, he not only lost recognition of him as a hero but also, all the acquaintances he made. He was an adult trapped in the body of a child and since he was not in kokiri, he lost his friend (Navi) for which it could be said that he lost everything. Her loneliness is what motivates him to look for her and that is where the events of Majora's mask begin. Many say that Link died early in this game, while others speculate that he did grow up. However, be that as it may, the hero of time died with sorrow and bitterness, for which he never managed to rest in peace and that is why he appears in Twilight princess, to transmit his knowledge to his descendant. .
what makes this really sad is that the Hero of Time howls the Song of Healing before any other song thinking that if that the song of healing once helped him it can help Link get saved from the curse of the Magic Zant casted on him then when he realizes it doesn't work on Wolf Link it's even more sad
That's because the song doesn't heal curses. Even in Majora's Mask, it's never used to heal Link. It's used to help spirits that are still tied to the earth through some sense of duty or regret pass on. Link wasn't cursed to be a Deku, he was possessed by the spirit of one (specifically, the son of the butler). The song helps that spirit move on, and frees link and creates a death mask. It's the song you help the spirits of the dead, unable to move on due to regrets and problems they cant resolve, accept their death and pass on their duty to Link, who then can resolve those in their stead. This song isn't for the Hero of Twilight, the Song of healing can't cure him of a curse. It's for the Hero of Time. Still locked to the earth and unable to move on, who the hero of twilight helps them accept their time is at an end by proving they are strong enough to take over as the Hero.
@@Sir_limon In the game to learn new sword techniques you must first howl at the howling stones (the songs that the golden wolf teaches you) to summon the golden wolf somewhere and meet him with sword in hand then the golden wolf will then become the hero's shade which was the hero of time who has not passed on yet. It might be that the two Links became wolves because they both have or had the triforce of courage and also they are directly related. The hero of twilight is a direct descendant of the hero of time.
Zonai,Twili,Powerful scary magic.... a mask sealed in Shadows.... the tear Midna used to shatter the mirror...tho never explicitly sayng it was destroyed... and now Tears of the Kingdom....
2012 was 11 years ago, I remember as far as like 2001 when I first heard the tune in the game. That was 22 years ago. It's crazy how time speeds up as you age. I can still remember seeing the mask salesman and him being annoying, me being 10 back then and being afraid of that creep. xD
You guys do know that after Majora's mask link returned to Hyrule and lived as a knight. He married Malone and had offspring. He was killed by an unknown assailant. His spirit attached to the forest spirit faron while awaiting his predecessor. TP link is blood kin to OOT link. So Termina must be a real place unless it's all a dream. Which is doubtful
Seems wrong. Not factually incorrect, mind you, but just in general. Hero of Time, Hero of Termina...Having gone through so much pain and trauma, experienced so much magic, tested and tried again and again...bodied by some random assailant?
Imagine if we got a zelda sequel to Twilight Princess and Majora's mask at the same time i.e. you use masks like the former, turn into beasts like the latter while having the melancholic atmosphere of both
Growing up with the LoZ series This game was special to me as it gave the feeling of this fate of being one of the cursed three pieces of the Triforce (despite their holiness) and its history of no one truly winning despite there being a clear loser. This cycle *WILL* repeat. While it wasn't meaningless to save those that needed to be saved; it wasn't an impact the world will feel but its the impact we need to comfort ourselves as it cycles through another Triforce battle.
Mark my words; Tears of the Kingdom is gonna bring back the Twilight. I don't think we'll actually see any previously notable Twilight inhabitants, but there's too many similarities with the Zonai for them to not bring it back.
I've got a similar theory (only difference is that I think it could also be the Twili's ancestors, the Interlopers). The energy and the glowy line things on Zonai stuff would already be a dead giveaway, but there's more. Some Zonai constructs have an eye symbol on them not too dissimilar to the eye on the back of the Fused Shadow. Also, the eye on the front of the Fused Shadow looks similar to the eye of the mysterious figure on the trailer 3 mural. If you look on a couple of notable Twili constructs (the Fused Shadow and the Twili throne), you'll find Zonai-like spiral patterns. Finally, the Zonai clearly have an association with twinned serpent dragon iconography as shown on the logo for TotK. Twinned serpent iconography can be clearly seen on many noteworthy Twili constructs such as the Twili throne room, the Fused Shadow, Zant's shoulder armor, and the Scimitar of Twilight. Suffice to say, if the Twili (or their ancestors the Interlopers) don't make some sort of appearance in TotK, I'll eat my haberdasher.
@@weatherman1504 don’t forget two of the most damning pieces of concrete evidence we have. 1) in one of the trailers we see a droplet falling in reverse. It splashes first, then the original drop rises up. This EXACT same droplet is from the springs of light in TP 2) look at the Master Sword in the TotK logo. It’s 100% Twili magic
@@gordo8354 I'm not sure about the light spirit spring droplet you mentioned (It's been a while since I played that game). I knew about the Master Sword having the borked half of it's blade replaced with Twili magic. That falls under the "glowy line things" that I mentioned in my comment. It's also an interesting detail because this wouldn't be the first time the Master Sword was augmented by the power of Twili constructs as it was also powered up by the Sols in the Twilight Realm.
To think, when link first started, he was a student of a school in the sky being bullied, but he became a hero that saved Zelda, only to be wrapped up in this dark and depressing conflict in this timeline, the dark timeline I call it..... If only he would've known then how much pain he would feel and see...... Crazy to think that if things didn't go his way, the bully would've become the hero instead and who knows if he would've been as strong as link to handle this heavy stuff.
Lloyd Ramirez My theory is that Majora and the ancient ones are Twili and onces Majora died they made the mask, but the real mask was the parts of the helmet Midna wore, and the twilight creatures stole them to cause another catastrophe.
@@SkelekittenGaming I think the story tells the creator of Majora mask where people in a cult that created the mask with the great evil power, since Termina is a parallel universe, same story was told to in Twilight princess where evil people in a cult like in Termina but in Hyrule instead was banish to Twilight realm and became Twili’s instead of humans, and spending time in the twilight realm, they created exactly the same thing like Majoras mask with power but with Twilight likeness like Midna wears later on in the game
majora's mask and Twilight Princess are from the same timeline, and the eye of the fused shadows and the majora's mask are identical, so in the past did twilis create the majora's mask?
It could be a possibility since we don't know much about the people who created the Mask of Majora. Maybe Majora was an ancient ruler of the Twilis and his/her spirit was sealed into this mask for their terrible deeds toward their people. Then the mask could have been eiter cast away in the dimension of Termina in exile or the mask could have been stolen.
the mask salesman tells us the ancient tribe that created majoras mask just vanished a long time ago the twili were a tribe of sorcerers that were banished to the twilight realm after trying to steal the triforce i think it would make sense for the twili to be the same ancient tribe
This song brings me to a very scary and anxious trance. It happened when I was younger. I must've been staring at the screen listening for a few hours. My grandma found me. I remember these little people in my room, with all different masks. It's terrifying to talk about it again after all these years. The childhood imagination is beyond our understanding. Very intense stuff.
I hope Tears of the Kingdom has an interaction with the Hero's Shade, or a new Song of Healing rendition. Probably not gonna happen since Nintendo doesn't care much about having existing continuity set up in previous games to affect the story of other Zelda games, and references only go as far as easter eggs.
I come here thinking this is a fan rendition of it in the TP soundfont, and then look at the comments and I get spoiled D: (I was planning on playing it soon) But what I did see, its really cool and an amazing touch that really centers zelda as one of my favorite franchises :)
I wonder if Majora was native to Termina and took a trip to Hyrule where Maskman finds him, or vice versa he's from the Hylian reality (where the Twili are) and took an excursion to Termina and used it as his own playground where other sources of Twili/Hylian culture and tech/magic didn't prominently exist anymore
The former. There is a theory that Ikanas stone tower was a portal into Hyrule and that Hyrule is Terminas heaven so to speak. The tower was built to invade the realm of the gods and take there power. The power was the triforce and the evil tribe of legend in majoras mask that made the mask were the interlopers of twilight princes.. However they were sealed away by the Goddeesses into the twilight realm becoming the twilii we see in twilight princess. The fused shadow mask is yet another attempt by the tribe to create a magical super weapon. However like majora it backfired and was deemed to dangerous so they destroyed it.
So, in other reality, called Termina. The inhabitans of the StoneTower Temple problably were the ones who made the Majora's Mask. But in the Main Reality, the Twilight people were the ones who made the equivalent for it.
Maybe Midna was the skull kid before and now she is nice with a releated part of Majora's Mask because i'm pretty sure at the ending of MM 3D/MM skull kid is nice and stuff so ya that is my theroy
