When I was a kid we couldn`t miss an episode. TV was actually a great thing back then.

I noticed a lot of things in this video. Roddy McDowell in a zoo, very ironic considering his role in the movie Planet of the Apes. The men wear mini skirts, the women long dresses. The women had the Flashdance expose the shoulder look before it was even a thing. The PAC MAN lights. The very ugly wallpaper, curtains and patterned chairs all in the same room! Pass me some Roy Orbinsons my eyes hurt! 😎 But yes, no doubt in my mind, the sets are one in the same. Backstage tricks and stories never cease to amaze me. And you are the source for classic tv viewing amazement! One last thing. To me, this channel is beyond earning awards or accolades. The work is not about how you should say things “properly”. or how you should do this and do that to earn praises in the comments section from the hard to please. It’s about the love of classic tv and how we can all see things differently in each episode we watch. The individual things that make us fans of the genre and how together through Rick’s channel, we can re-experience what we like and re-examine things we may not have noticed before, big or small, and as a result, learn to love these shows even more. Thank you Rick for all you do! 👍🏻

Did you notice elements from People Are Alike All Over were reused in the Star Trek pilot The Cage? Kidnapping a human male, lock him up in a zoo/menagerie, have the blonde female ease him into being a zoo attraction. The blond female is even the same actress, Susan Oliver, she plays Teenya in the Twilight Zone and Vina in Star Trek.

Hey, Rick! If we go by the same logic, we could also say that all of the episodes we see exterior shots of the houses from the recently demolished Universal studios "ranch" (home to Desperate Housewives, The Partridge Family, I Dream of Jeannine, Bewitched, My Three Sons, Father Knows Best, Gidget, Lethal Weapon and so many more...) all these episodes and series therefore all exist in the same universe. I guess some parts of Morning Glory Circle are more quiet than others...

I think that the simplest explanation for the similarity of the sets was that the studio just used what was available, without any deeper ideas that the two episodes took place in the same universe. That said, if anyone wanted to write "Twilight Zone" fanfiction that used this theory as the basis, it would work well enough . . . . One thing I do remember from "Third from the Sun" was the car used by the family trying to escape to the spaceship, (the C-57D from "Forbidden Planet" fame.) At first, I thought I remembered it as the Tucker Torpedo, which had a very futuristic look. But when I researched it more, I found out the car in the episode was a customized 1951 Buick called The Blue Danube, built by famed customizer George Barris. One other thing I do remember was that instead of the rumble of an engine, this car made the sound of having a gas turbine engine. These details suggested that this was not a typical car from "our world," and was a nice touch! 69th like.

Great job, Rick! Another thing that I've noticed in the episode of "People Are Alike Everywhere": after they crash on Mars, Roddy McDowell's character, Sam Conrad, is looking for his fellow astronaut, Warren Marcusson (Paul Comi). Sam finds him unconscious under a mattress with headphones on. As Sam checks Marcusson's pulse he then goes to retrieve a syringe and comes back to give Marcusson a shot, the headphones are still on him, but as Sam looks away for a second and then looks back the headphones are no longer there, and are nowhere to be seen. Tell me what you think. Thanks!

On a similar note, the Air Force base set for the original Star Trek episode "Tomorrow is Yesterday" appears to be the same set as featured on "I Dream of Jeannie." Sharing amongst different productions would be a prime way of cutting costs for individual episodes. Sets, in particular, were a major expense in those days. I know that I've seen the "Bewitched" set used in other productions.

It’s amazing how they were able to build a home out of materials that weren’t present on Mars. As you noticed the entire planet seem to be nothing but rock. Thought that with that kind of ingenuity and intelligence, you’d think they would’ve had the ability to have some sort of space program so they could explore outside their planet. Just a thought. Oh and I would have thought Rodey McDowell would have wound up on the planet of the apes instead of Mars!

I don't see these episodes often enough and in quick enough succession to each other for me to have caught this. I've seen them all, but did not notice this quite interesting detail. Of course they repurposed sets, and props. Their budget was small. Star Trek also had small budgets. Zone made some episodes in only one or two rooms. If they saved money on some episodes, they would have more to spend on later episodes. Filming on location is expensive. Watch Space: 1999 to see repurposed sets and props.

It's a fun theory, but it doesn't work. Note that at the end of the episode they are out at night talking about the stars looking far away, and one says that the star they want is not so far and that it's a shiny bright one over on the right. But if they were on Mars, they wouldn't be referring to it as a star, it would be the sun, the same as ours, just a little bit smaller than we see it (as we've seen from our own landers). No way they'd confuse the (daytime!) sun of Mars -- our sun -- with a star. So, it's not Mars.

I am pretty sure that in third rock, they talked about traveling to another star. The reason I remember is because the miles that they said they were needing to travel were far too little to be going to another star. If this is true then they could not have been going from Mars to Earth. Also, tho the sets are likely the same, they aren't the same house as the fire place is different, smaller with a book case between it and the area going to the front door. this is far more than a simple cosmetic change if different people are arranging a normal house. The fireplace is rarely completely changed in shape and placement.

It’s all about the money! They didn’t have the budgets back then like they do now. They had to be creative without cutting corners. I think it’s fun to notice what they did to save money. Now they would just throw the set away and spend more money to make a new one. You saw a lot more creativity back then. My husband, who just turned 74, was a child actor which he hated but he told me they reused sets over and over again to save money It was smart. I’m sure not too many people noticed it back then.

Been a fan of the show and never noticed that. What if you're right about it being from the same universe, you're not thinking about it the right way. What do I mean is People are alike all over is the happen first. They read his minds and made his home, at the end there was one person not alright with caging a human from earth. With a race that read thoughts about to learn things from him and one that would be willing to free him others would slowly think the same it's human nature... Slowly there be fights and people start wanting to live like earthlings do... This growth would lead us to Third Rock From the Sun. Or that's my thoughts anyway

The writers made it to easy to figure out in the episode “Third From The Sun” The car noise, the telephone to begin with.

*Behind a tiny ship heading into space is a doomed planet on the verge of suicide. Ahead lies a place called Earth, the third planet from the Sun. And for William Sturka and the men and women with him, it's the eve of the beginning-in the Twilight Zone.*

Rick you didn't mention that the chain link fence in both episodes are the same. When Roddy is behind it and then Fritz Weaver is standing in front of it. Same fence same "No Smoking Beyond This Point" signs.

Hmmm, never noticed that before but it looks like you are right. Same room with slight changes. I have the whole set so I think I need to start at the beginning and watch carefully for things to compare.

Of course. Many talk about how 'I Dream of Jeannie" and 'Bewitched' are related and also use many of the same sets

I saw this on a star trek episode. The captain went back in time to reset the natural timeline where he met a woman who had to die (Joan Collins the city on the edge of forever) episode so Hitler couldn't be the first to be the atom bomb maker. And the backdrop was Floyds barber shop from the Andy Griffin in show in Mayberry! And it was a fan favorite. Mine too!!

Both episodes are good, but I'm with you. I prefer People are Alike.

The idea of humans as zoo specimens was revisited in a Star Trek Animated episode, as well as one from The Orville.

I also noticed that the kitchen in Roddy's ep was also used in the Nancy Malone ep.

That set really reminds me of one of the main character's homes in the series Grimm. Anybody?
