Ernest Moran of West Monroe, Louisiana, gently corrected me when, in an email, I called this ensemble an orchestra. It is, he said, “a concert band”, so called because there are no strings.
For 21 years he was a member of this, the Twin City Concert Band, playing the euphonium. For the last 10 years Ernest was its Assistant Conductor.
In this video, shot on June 24, 2019 at the Assembly Church of West Monroe by Greg Oden, he conducts “Chorale and Shaker Dance” by John Zdechlik. This is Ernest’s retirement concert. He dedicates the performance to our friend and fellow musician Patrick Richardson of Tulsa, Ok.
The band , he said, “consists of approximately 50 members who are current/retired music educators, college students and members of the local community who enjoy making music”.
I once heard music described as math for the soul. What would our lives be without it?
