In Australia you must have your pool fully fenced with a safety gate. If you can afford a pool, you can afford to put a fence around it 😡😡 It's like having to put your baby into an approved car seat when driving. No excuses.

Same in Phoenix but not everyone follows the law.

At minimum you should have audible alarms on all doors leading to the backyard. Teach your kids to swim asap.

Young children drowning in backyard pools can be prevented if you make sure your children are being watched properly make sure doors have locks too high for them to reach and pools are fenced.. my friends son drown when another kid let him outside and opened the fence around the pool and left him there so sadly things still happen

You can teach babies to swim. If you are going to have a pool, teach them I swim. Also a fence needs to be up

My heart goes out to the parents. I can't imagine trying to do cpr on both kids and waiting for someone to show up. The agony of the father will last a lifetime.

This is what our legislators need to legislate: require pools fences around fences in homes where minor children live, since way too many people are more concerned about aesthetics than the safety of children. Data shows that pool fences save lives.

How about parents watch their kids?

I came here to say this. Unfortunately, these parents are distracted for whatever reason. What an awful way to die. I bought a house with a pool in 2017 when my son was a baby and we immediately bought a pool fence. We also had our son in ISR classes for 3 years. You can never be too safe around pools. RIP to these precious girls. 😢

@@X56th_SFS of course, it's imperative to take every precaution when it comes to children and water, but young children will do any number of unexpected things at any unexpected hour, and it's physically impossible to have eyes on children (or anyone, for that matter) 24/7. My oldest, now 36, decided to open the front door of my house and go walking through the neighborhood with our family dog at 1:00 in the morning when he was 3...not to mention, he did this naked from the waist down after getting up to go to the bathroom (he would drop trow and couldn't get his underwear and PJ bottoms back on, so we'd always find him naked from the waist down in the morning. I would tell him to come get me when he woke up to "go potty," but being 3, he wanted to "be a big boy" and be independent. I never heard him and never woke up when he happened to wake up and use the bathroom and, this particular time, he just decided to open the front door and go outside! He'd never even attempted to open the front door before, and I wouldn't have thought he'd be able to get it unlocked and opened, so imagine my surprise when I was woken by the doorbell ringing at 1:30 a.m. and I opened it to find my son and the dog! Similarly, I know another family whose 3 yo son was put down for an afternoon nap, as he did every day. This time, though, he slept longer than usual. Dad was home with him while Mom was working. He just thought he must've been extra tired to sleep so long or maybe he was going through a growth spurt. Imagine this dad's sheer horror to go out back and find his son's dead body in the unfenced pool in their back yard. The child had used the drawers like stairs to climb to the open window in his bedroom, he pushed out the screen and jumped down to the ground in order to get out back and to that pool. His death destroyed their marriage, as both parents couldn't ever get passed blaming themselves and each other. Data shows that pool fences save lives. Pool fences add an extra barrier, and provide extra time to find a wandering child and bring them back to safety.

It is a law in the city of Phoenix. Very specific guidelines about the fence, gate and door that accesses the pool. Law has been in effect since 1980.

Ive had pools my whole life there's pool fencing and pool alarms !!!! They have so many different kinds of alarms out there no excuses as a parent it's your job to do one or the other either have a fence have multiple at least two different types of alarms they haven't set up if something hits the water even lightweight it will set off an alarm

I'm so sorry for the loss of these babies it is heartbreaking, but who wasn't watching them. You can't just let little kids be out of site longer than 10 seconds. Nothing you are doing is more important than watching a child. If you can't see them THAT IS A PROBLEM. Always keep your eye on them. 😢

Well, this was wholly preventable…an epic, predictable parental fauilure results in a double tragedy! BUT, don’t make every pool owner install some expensive, ugly perimeter fencing. This should be a risk-based decision made by the individual owner: do I need a fence to keep my toddlers from falling into my pool? If it’s just an adult couple, or adult single - no fencing should be required, period. Personal choice + personal responsibility.

Phoenix is not a cheap area to live. It looks like they have a pretty nice home having a lock on your door that when it is opened sounds an alarm. A fence around your pool. Maybe a pool alarm so that if something goes in the pool you can hear it. I think it should be a state law and I think the state should pay for it that every child should be allowed to sign up and have swimming lessons as early as possible. I think some places let you have them at 6 months. They pay for all these other crazy things and waste our tax money you know how many children a year would survive if they just knew basic swimming. Literally even an 18-month-old can learn how to swim in a year old baby can learn how to swim and stay on their back. Fences around your pool if you can afford to have a full you can afford to put a fence up. Just basic safety around a pool or having doors and windows that have locks and alarms on them so that your children cannot get out back and if they do get out you can hear that. I've heard people say well he should have been watching them better how were they able to get in the pool both of them. It literally takes 20 seconds for a child to be in the house open the door go outside and get in the pool and drown. It takes 7 seconds to drown and I'd say maybe another 10 to 15 seconds to walk to the door open it to get out into the backyard and then get into the pool. This is just absolutely such a tragedy that could have been prevented with basic safety devices in place.
