Aretha divulged to Oprah that she wrote this song as a tribute to Dennis Edwards who was a member of the Temptations group. At the time she and Dennis were in a relationship. This was one of many songs she wrote. Great reaction. 👏👏

Day Dreaming brought a new Era of sound for Aretha coming out of her gospel period and pop successes in the mid to late 60s. I think you both would like "Spanish Harlem" (a 60s cover), and "Rock Steady". These tracks are musically mature, and dance worthy.

To me, the early 70s is her golden era. Even though she already had a million hits by this time, she was innovating and focusing on making a cohesive album. This is the post-psychedelic time of Fender Rhodes electric pianos, wurlitzer, klavinets. Most early 70s music has some of these elements. Still 60s dreamy, but devoid of sitars etc. Roberta Flacks " i can see the sun in late December" is an extreme version of this sound, in a good way. Luther Vandross produced one of her last albums, and it has a daydream themed song on it too. "Just my daydream". Not as well known, but just as nice. Also Corinne Bailey Rae does a nice cover of this. She has a softer voice, and it gives it more the feel of a young girl singing it.
