Twisters definitely wasn't a sequel anyone asked for, and its definitely not high art, but it turned out to be a surprisingly entertaining movie in its own right. Join me for my review.

I disagree. A movie is meant to entertain people via the story it tells. A message is being sent via this story, its just important to make the story be a rhetorical argument made of the human experience, rather than being a 1:1 reflection of reality. Politics in a movie isn't a problem, it's just injecting/propagandizing YOUR politics into it which is. Rather than the story working on its own merits via the story being presented

The protagonist of this movie is a clever, capable and competent woman. And yet, she was able to achieve all of this by hard work, loss, mistakes, never downplay any male counterpart, never pretend, never put her achievements above anyone else, never annoy or never be obnoxious. Is that hard, Hollywood?

Ugh fine I’ll be that comment- Paxton was the milquetoast, bland, vanilla actor of the 90s- he was never detrimental to a flick but no one ever said ‘you know, that movie looks kinda dumb but hey, it’s Bill Paxton so I’ll go…’ He was sort of an under-acting over actor. I really did like the guy but cmon his Morgan Earp portrayal, Chip in Weird Science, Bill Henrickson in Big Love, Lovett in Titanic, Hudson in Aliens, Billy in Twister; they’re all completely on the nose of a Paxton portrayal. Campy, over-exaggerated with just enough understated blandness. I suppose you can be under appreciated but in my opinion, he had far more great roles given to him than any average actor had a right to expect. Don’t get me wrong, he was a completely decent actor and I’m actually a fan of a lot of the movies he was in- Tombstone is still one of my favorites- but he wasn’t some unrecognized thespian who labored in obscurity.

I’m a meteorologist today because I was inspired after seeing Twister on tv as a kid. Obviously not very scientifically accurate, but there are many bits and pieces of real stuff mixed in. I was worried about the sequel given the track record of modern sequels, but I was delighted and surprised by Twisters. A lot more attention to detail on the scientific stuff as well as weather nerd Easter eggs and meteorologist cameos packed up in a way that doesn’t distract or overshadow the film as a whole. You can really tell the director and writers had a genuine love for the original and the science behind it. During production they sought input from actual chasers and meteorologist, but balanced it with creative liberties that make it more screen-friendly. Worthy sequel.

And yet, they flew a lightweight drone into multiple storms, showed a regular truck go into a tornado (as opposed to one with shielding to block the wind from getting under it), had a plot that centered around somehow having enough polymer to stop a tornado despite the massive size of even a small storm, and had the main character drive into an EF5 tornado only a couple minutes after showing an oil pumpjack flying through the air. This movie was the equivalent of someone who tries to sound smart, but doesn't actually know anything. Genuinely, I'm open to specific details about what, exactly, was realistic in this movie.

I've lived here for nearly thirty years and can count on one hand the number of earthquakes I've felt in the south bay area. (By the way, that San Andreas movie from several years ago was complete crap. The San Andreas fault is not the type of fault to cause the destruction shown.) I remember my parents were in voice chat with some people on World of Warcraft doing a raid. My dad said "ok, pulling in 3...2--hold on, earthquake--1..." Everyone else was like "wait? what? I was surprised at how well the film balanced the fun and spectacle of it all with the more somber, realistic after effects of these storms. It never felt clumsy and was all really enjoyable. This might be the most fun and thrills I’ve had at the theater since Top Gun: Maverick. Hollywood may finally be getting it through their skulls that a message isn’t always necessary and that story should always come first.

I wouldn't go that far. It was a decent movie, and refreshing after all the Disney shitstorm, but it's not going to be a classic. The plot was predictable, and the characters while not flat, not iconic either. I enjoyed it, except the super cringe youtuber parts, but probably not going to watch again. On the positive side, the science of it was surprisingly accurate (for a movie), and yes, it managed to find a good balance between excitement and tragedy. On the other hand it may have been better to go all in on one. Either focus on the thrill of chasing a deadly tornado, or make it all about the destruction. That latter can go in many directions: pure disaster movie, survivors guilt and PTSD, evil corporations praying on the victims, etc. This movie tried to do all, and while it did a decent job, neither got enough time.

This movie was pure crap. Did I watch the lifetime version of it that made no sense? People playing outside in clear day until the storm turns and instantly they’re in harms way, thats not how storms work. The acting was lightweight bordering on cringe, no one had storm cellars in Oklahoma, sitting in multiple tornadoes as if the windows wouldn’t blow out leaving you to be impaled, the RU-vidrs actually the good guys because they help clean up, and give away free stuff. Well besides the times they only film the storm. And I can go on and on.

@@phillippropst3825believe it or not, lots of houses in Oklahoma don’t have storm cellars. I have loads of family that live there and none of them have storms cellars. My mom is actually excited for this movie and made me watch the original with her a few nights ago. I think what makes a sequel a fantastic idea is precisely that it's been so long since the original. Satellite and radar technology have developed exponentially since the original, making it so that the same premise set in today's world would create an entirely different set of circumstances. Additionally, part of the reason Twisters was such a good movie in the first place was that it's such a simple formula. Grand spectacle + entertaining cast + a few minor plot points that help fluff out the story = an entertaining film. Nothing much else to it.

As someone who lives in Oklahoma, my only main gripe with the movie is it seems no one knows a storm is coming. Specifically The rodeo scene would never happen in real life as in Oklahoma we take severe storms very seriously and we know where they are and no one would be outside. Anything occurring outside would be canceled. We have 24/7 news coverage of severe storms until they dissipate. Just about everything going on is being covered over the 3-5 different news channels we have. That being said it was pretty easy to ignore and just enjoy the spectacle. I’m also happy our state is getting more time on the big screen, but it’s covering our worst aspect. All of the cities mentioned are real to which is nice to see.

As a weather enthusiast and OG Twister movie enjoyer, I absolutely loved Twisters. I've been dying to see it since it was first announced years ago that it was being made, and for me, it easily lived up to expectations and then some. All I wanted was a good, simple, fun movie about storm chasing, and we got just that. I was blown away most by the storm structure from which the tornadoes form, as they are bang-on accurate to real-life, unlike pretty much every other tornado movie where it's just a bunch of generic thunderstorm clouds and then a funny funnel noodles on down. The characters were all likeable and easy to root for (well except Scott (played by David Corenswet) at the end when he said something pretty messed up). The science was pretty good for the most part. Scanning a tornado from all ends with phased-array radar is perfectly accurate to real-life, as well as all the meteorological terms and explanations used, though trying to kill a tornado by throwing a bunch of sodium and stuff into the atmosphere is... reasonable, but probably not that feasible. And BEST OF ALL, there was no mention of "the message," which was a very pleasant surprise. Going in I was half-expecting it to be there given that's what most movies nowadays are doing, but Mr. Chung is spot on when he says that movies are just meant for entertainment. Not to be a forced lecture about certain topics. I just want to turn my brain off to the real world for a bit and just enjoy myself, and I got what I paid for. While Twisters ultimately falls just short of the original for me only in terms of the charm of its characters, story-building and soundtrack, it is still easily superior to it in every other way in terms of being a more accurate tornado chasing movie, and it stands on its own as a solid movie without needing to rely so much on its predecessor, which is just wonderful. 10/10 will watch again: can't wait to get it on DVD. :D

In a similar vein to Sharknado, we need a parody where an F scale tornado tracks through a breast implant warehouse, and the movie is just an ever-more-ridiculous montage of people getting bodied by fast-moving bags of saline. Titty-Twister.

Immediately I love it. Kate starts off all arrogant and gets her team killed. Now she needs to start over with nothing. THAT is how you craft a character. All that guilt, shame, remorse, just bubbling up from the surface. She is now capable of anything under the right circumstances. She will drive herself to win, no matter what it takes. She needs to redeem herself. Proto approved!

Although i understand the issue with the villian in this movie, havie or tornado, i gotta give a lot of love tohow the frame the tornados. Instant, destructive, volatile, and unpredictable. Thats exactly how they are here in OK. You truely cant fathom how much damage they can do until you see one tearing up a small town.

I'm actually shocked, genuinely shocked, that no attempt was made to make either protagonist a kid of Paxton and Hunt's characters or something like that. Hunt's character doing a cameo, referencing Paxton's character's death. Nothing like that...i gotta say i'm impressed.

I liked that the movie was fun and exciting but like you said, simple. It never tried to be anything more than it was and that's why it succeeded. It had fun and funny characters, some good emotional moments, exciting action and tension, and an entertaining story. Obviously things can have deeper messages or even complex and layered plots and be great but sometimes it's fun to just have a good entertaining movie, but also one that is still comprehensible and not just stupid crap passed off as "humor" where you have to turn your brain off to enjoy anything. I enjoyed how Kate was competent and smart and even a little witty and sassy but not just demeaning or elevated beyond reason. She didn't shine by pushing others down but rather through her own merits. She was flawed and struggled and made mistakes but owned them. And Tyler was such a fun character to add to the dynamic and help bring Kate out of her shell more and help her regain confidence she lost in the past with her traumatic experience with tornadoes. A solid 7/10 for me as an overall movie but 10/10 experience.

I saw it in the theater this past weekend. Living in Oklahoma (most of the movie was filmed an hour from my house), this movie really felt like a celebration of the state and the storm crazy culture. Weather is indeed a HUGE deal here. It also wasn’t shy about killing people and showing just how scary this shit actually is. It was a good movie and a breath of fresh air!

The 90s Twister is iconic. The new movie is fine. Good even. No message, no pandering, that is great and worthy of a summer popcorn flick. But let's be real. The only reason to choose this one over the old movie is when you have seen the old one so many times that you know all the dialoge by heart.
