I'm not one who participates on twitch, that said, I think you might want to watch a band called The Hu. Mongolian throat singing, here is the link: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jM8dCGIm6yc.html en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuvan_throat_singing
Nightwish's Shoemaker features some of Floor's most ambitious flexing vocals with a great story. If you listen to it do some quick research to understand its premise.
The versatility of her voice is just too great. She may not be the very very best at one type of singing (only a super specialist could be better than her at a specific style) but the fact that she does so many styles so damn good and switch between them so quickly puts her at the top in my opinion.
There are 2 kinds of Floorgasms - the first, and most common, is when she blasts a nice E6+ belt or some such. The second, is the realisation that Floor is growling. xD
@@Grizzlox LOL did he leave the video there?? Yes floor is skilled in her breath control and always finishes a song in style, she is explaining it on her own youtube videos. As a vocal teacher she also has to know such things. Impressive every time!
There are quite a few people explaining how to growl. One of then is Mary Z (VoiceHacks), f.i. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UHWBAO6xqzI.html. And there is also a fun "workshop" by Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy, (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fCMcu18sigc.html). And if you definitely want to know more about the mechanics you should check out Melissa Cross (www.melissacross.com), she developed a growling/screaming course and had Angela Gossow as a student: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZDLMB2sLnhQ.html. If I'm not mistaken Melissa's course was also used by Floor to learn some growling. (Edit: Ok, I just read Melissa was already mentioned).
She's the only female singer I know who can draw you in with her siren voice and in an instant strike you down in the next verse! She truly is a Valkyrie reigning fire and ash upon her unsuspecting subjects! Great reaction, keep them up! You'll learn a lot from this band.
The fact that she's a trained singer and vocal coach makes me confident that she wouldn't do something she knows will damage her chords. She works within her limits. Which is what is blowing Charlie's mind.

Fun fact: This is only the 2nd song of the setlist, after which Nightwish plays 'Ever Dream' which is more mixed/chest + head. Floor sings it beautifully without taking a break in between XD
Usually I feel others’ screams or growls either as an emotional or “demonic”-like thing, but only Floor gives out this scarily believable animalistic, primal sound.
This is the other extreme that Floor is capable of doing! We have fun watching the surprise on reactors faces to hear the surprises. Loved your reaction my friend Peace.
@@BigBrainSinger Floor's growling in Nightwish is nothing in comparison to when she was with her own band Revamp. Check out this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SNPesLFTnUg.html Unfortunately, the audio quality is low, so you don't need to react to it on camera. Just watch it when you have 4 minutes time. I don't know any other female singer who switches between death growls and operatic soprano back and forth, do you?
There's a classically trained singer called Melissa Cross, known as "The Queen of Scream", who teaches metal band singers how to growl without ruining their voice.
I would also recommend Mark of the Karvadox Academy. He's on youtube, also an extreme singer/vocal coach and he breaks down many, many singers' voice techniques. Has great videos.
I remember the first time I heard this it sent my stomach for a loop. It was one of those things where I knew it wasn't Marco doing it...but "No way is that her!". This woman can do anything the wants, and I'm hard pressed to find a more complete package - it's not fair. It's like someone's put in a cheat code and Floor's shown up in armor and just beats the game for you! The whole band is an assortment of talent who are at their peak
This is definitely my favorite nightwish reaction so far, and I've watched a ton of reaction. Floor is just amazing, I've been following her since 2004 and she gets better and better. You should try a ballad now, like dead boy's poem live at buenos aires or if you want to go heavy try romanticide at Wacken or 7 days to the wolves at wembley. You'll love them ❤️
That means a LOT Carlo, Thank you! So, we listened to a ballad today on stream called "How's the Heart" I'll make sure to upload that soon! I have another video from Wacken actually too, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tfvbSQeUMSw.html So much fun meeting this community!
Most people don't even realize it on the first line or even the first chorus because Marco is able to match Floor's tone quality so well. How good is he btw? And he plays tricky bass parts while singing which just seems unpossible
This reaction got me to subscribe back in December, and I keep coming back to it to rewatch. Your WTF cracks me up *every time*. Thanks for the great reactions!
Floor said during an interview with Henk Poort (you will get to him at some point, believe me) that she knows she is never going to be the best growler in the world, but she enjoys getting out of her confort zone an try surprising people with her vocal performances. Nice reaction, you are doing good!!))
@@BigBrainSinger I think you will find that Floor is Versatile, the capital V is no typo either. You do really have to do her Beste Zangers performances for some more brain-melting and I do hope you have seen this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UeTyAZtV5wI.html&t And this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6asFfKqE2vg.html&t
OK, that was fun. Floor had her own band called ReVamp, pre-Nightwish, which ran from 2009 to 2016. She was the management, plus wrote the lyrics and the vocal melodies for the songs. In ReVamp, Floor growled frequently during live shows, but in the studio stuff, the growling was usually performed by a dude. She claims that she is not really that good at it, which means of course is that she is only "very good" at it compared to other metal singers. When listening to this performance, we have to keep in mind that she is growling as the backing singer to Marko's cleans so the volume is down. As we hear at the end of the song, she can get quite loud with it if she wishes. There is very little use of the technique in Nightwish as Tuomas is not a fan of it. He is on record (pre-Floor) as saying there will never be "grunts" in Nightwish. I guess Floor changed his mind for this song at least. Her short growls in "Ghost River" are probably more impressive as she seems to go from cleans to growls on a single breath. Your ears might pick up a quick breath, but I'm not hearing one. You need to listen to "Shoemaker" next as Tuomas made her really push her vocal limits. It was released this year so no live performances yet, only the official lyric video. It's about NASA scientist Eugene Shoemaker who's ashes are scattered on the moon in a crater named after him. He is noted for the study of craters. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rjp_DfvJimg.html The song has a very dramatic ending which will appeal to your opera side, while the rest of the song demands a high degree of vocal agility and breath control. She is supposed to have said to Tuomas after hearing the demo vocal tracks, "When do I get to breathe?"
In case it's not been mentioned yet, this is Wembley ARENA - indoors, capacity about 11500. Wembley Stadium is next door. That's the football stadium where the biggest performers play gigs to 80+ thousand.
You should do a reaction to Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down which features 11 guest vocalists. (Ayreon if you didn't know is a musical project of Arjen Anthony Lucassen and encompasses a bunch of rock/metal opera albums set in the "Ayreon Universe". He uses a lot of vocalists from various bands to play the characters in his metal operas.
Yes, AWESOME song and I should think that entire album is that great as well! I have not heard the rest yet but with all of those amazing people working on that project, it can't be any less than good!
Posted by Oliphant first: Freddy Mercury, Rob Halford, Ronnie James, Dio, Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald and a Fiery Demon from Hell enter a bar. The Barkeeper looks up and says, "Hi Floor. The usual?"
and Floor answers, no ......im in for a peated whisky from Islay, an Ardbeg 10 yrs. no ice and in a Glencairn nosing glass pls. and play some Pantera while i drink it...
there are a ton of great singers in the world... but I'm not certain I've found one as versatile as Floor Jansen. She growls deeper than most men, but can pull a sustained D6. She can sing rock, pop, classical, opera, theater, metal, folk. there's a standing joke in the NW army that Floor sings what she wants where others sing what they can. I like to think with their recent album releases that Tuomas writes the music thinking there's no way anyone can pull this off, hands it to Floor almost jokingly, and Floor looks it over, looks at Tuomas and goes... 'this all you got?'
Did you know Floor is a voice coach? she has been a voice coach for at least 15 years, she now lives in Sweden with her husband Hannes van Dahl, he is the drummer of the metal band sabaton, they have a 3 year old daughter....
Not quite accurate - Floor did some voice master class coaching during her burn out, but not since - up til now, where she has done 2, with more coming.
@@kimfabritiusdetengnagel2038 if you have seen her last video, you will hear that she has been a voice coach for at least 15 years, you are wrong sorry.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-027e4d2Rz4A.html here she mentioned that she has done at least 15 years of voice coaching, teaching, it does not matter how much she has done since her burn out, the fact is that she has done 15 years of coaching, that counts too...
This is one of my fave reactions you have done ....the Growling takes everybody by surprise ...Why she is the most versatile SINGER in Music out now...she is a Goddess lol
Nightwish army !! We were here ! Hope you enjoy because we would like you to take on a NW journey . Next song i would suggest is : song of myself . Keep going your good job man
Sorry I am a month late, but I have nothing to add to what has already been said about Floor. She is beyond language and logic and her being is pure emotion.
This all of a sudden just leaving the computer like 🤯🤯🤯🤯 for unmeasurable / -predictable time is just a classic for ever!! ❤️ And the i'll just worship her and go to her house...until she teaches me how to do that... 😂😂😂
One of my favorite parts to first time reaction videos of Floor is the usual song title progression reactions, and then they come to first hear the demon. She is such a world treasure.
Damn, I subscribed and liked this video just because u asked nicely and said "please". It is refreshing after thousands of youtubers just ordering us to do so. Thank you.
Floor is not very fond of growling, but she do it sometimes. So it's often a little surprise. This is an angry and powerful song, so it's more than appropriate there.
I love this song, well I love all Nightwish songs, but this one is high on my favourites list. It took me quite a few listens too take in that yes, it is Floor growling :D I mean she does a lot of things, but I couldn't comprehend that she also growls. And as a person who don't like much growling, I love hers. I am a total Floor fangirl :D I just love everything she does, she's amazing, and absolutely my favourite singer in the world. To me, none other can compare
Fun reaction! Yea "creeper" there at the end is the perfect example of a font of misinformation. The fact is, that if you're growling correctly, you're using (like you said), your false chords, and not the true ones, thus the true ones aren't being stressed or harmed at all. And the false ones are built much tougher than the real ones, so they can handle it easily. A good night's sleep and some hydration and your false folds will be 100% again the next day. Floor, and other vocalists, who have been doing it for decades, with no degradation of ability, are proof positive that there's a completely healthy way to growl, even day-after-day/long-term, if desired. Keep up the good work and enjoy the Rabbit hole! =)
@@BigBrainSinger Have you heard Jinjer yet? There's a girl that has switching back and forth from growling to clean down to an art, and she's been doing it for over a decade. I mean, if it did fuck up your voice it must take quite awhile... It's pretty awesome that Floor CAN growl but yea, she barely does it.
Hahaha...I'm throwing myself away. Your reaction to Floor's growling is the absolute best! And I've seen them all (I think). Priceless! As Yoda would say: Learning you are, young Padawan. Patience you must have, young Padawan.
I remember when you posted this a year ago. Absolutely loved your reaction. The best! Every once in a while, I have to come back here to see your reaction. Simply priceless. Still makes me LOL every time! Did you ever do your deep dive into the dark arts of growl/scream?
Your reaction to those first growls is precious!! 😹 Try watching this same song live in Mexico City, or Rock in Rio 2015 or even on the Nightwish cruise ship! The growl at the end of Rock in Rio will blow your mind!!!
Should have mentioned that the immortal Yma Sumac was growling in the early 1950's (listen to "Chuncho"). Back then nobody had a clue what to make of it.
that leather outfit she is wearing just pops it looks so good on her and yes floor is growling those vocals and marko isn't with what she can do with her voice such an absolutely beautiful and stunning range she has in her toolbox what an awesome live experience this must have been for looks like 10,000 people at a sold out wembley which i don't know how many people you can get into that arena but nightwish seems to fill that space rather well seeing her up on that pedestal like thing in that leather outfit that just pops and it looks sooo good on her standing on that speaker monitor looks like a warrior up there growling in the mic i love it sounds sooo good again for that stance she does up there like that she will always be a warrior queen in my heart
Yeah, but Tatiana doesn't sing operatic :) Watch this one and notice the different vocal styles: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SNPesLFTnUg.html
And I will present you the Queen of the Damned: Melissa Bony. Main vocalist of Rage of Light and Ad Infinitum. Guest vocalist of Warkings as the Queen of the Damned. Rage of Light are primarily her harsh vocals and Ad Infinitum is mainly her clean vocals. In Warkings she is always growling
Just saw your recorded twitch session including the spotify algorithm insights as well as a bunch of other Nightwish classics (I highly recommend to have a look, folks!) and had to see your reaction again ^^ Sub (and bell) included with pleasure.
As we all know now, Floor is the Only one in the world who is able to sing high notes and just after that growl in the very same song. And she is a fantastic story teller too. Floor is absolutely the best. She Can!
Amorphis's Death of a King had a similar effect on me, someone used to Floor Jansen just deciding she'd switch gears on the go. And all of this is after being aware and occasional listener of Opeth, where Mikael Åkerlund flips between demonic and 70s soft prog rock like nobody's business.
@@BigBrainSinger Can we get a technical reaction to Floor in Nightwish's Poet And The Pendulum (at Wembley again)? It's a f'ing tour de force of vocal stamina, sensitivity and expression
@@BigBrainSinger Awesome. The Nightwish Army will want you to do the song later in your journey because it takes a lot of background to fully appreciate Tuomas' compositional achievement, but from time to time a reactor comes along who can just focus on Floor in that song and on what she achieved as a vocalist there. I very much look forward to this.
Just for your own enjoyment, watch the "Rock in Rio" 2015 version of this song. Crummy TV sound mix, but some great video, and the best shot of Floor's concluding growl, during which she attempts to vaporize Marko.
Best singer in the world, she really is special. Even her physical attributes are related to what she can do. She is gifted and her voice is a gift to humanity. I know im not the most hardcore fan, nor do i consider or want to call myself one. I do like Nightwish a lot but thats it. Floor is in my opinion the best singer of all time or at least top 3
Erwin, my glasses are messed up. For a second I read what you said but it looked like the last word was Gestapo for some reason. Guess I just read it too fast. Seriously though, I know I need new glasses... lol
The thing is if you listen carefully its not just growling its growling with tonal quality harmonising in tune with Marko thats why its so hard to seperate the two voices and why people have a hard time getting there head round it .Also remember this is at the beginning of a set . Floor did much more low frequency growling in her band ReVamp before joining NW for her this was easy and she says in interviews if its damaging your voice then stop because you aren't doing it right .I dar say it will come up at some point in her master class its well worth watching to understand the body mechanics going on .
You need to speak with Mark from Kardavox Academy for a growling lesson . . but then you should listen to Angela Gossow with Arch Enemy for the queen of the metal growl (check out the live version of Nemesis from 2008).
Ha! Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, while Italy used to be the best place to learn to sing opera, the United States and Netherlands have since become the best hubs for classical singing education. Charlie makes 90% of his income from performing and recording operatic and sacred music. The key is sticking to it and never settling for less than perfect. (and it usually takes closer to 6 years, not 6 months...) Wishing your Nephew the best of luck in his career!
This is one of her best performances ever, her voice was on point, even after being sick just a few days before and playing at the end of a tour. If you get to watch Face Your Demons from her performance at AFAS 2021, you'll also be pleasantly surprised :D
She is amazing and she is Beautiful inside and out. Her technique and her breathe control are awesome. You should react to Floor with Revamp:Disdain and Wildcard . Wild card don't watch the video . She has two voice Masterclass lessons on her RU-vid Channel. You should react to her doing O Mio Bambino Cara with Revamp or with just her and the piano. Her Nightwish 's new album she does an Operactic part its called Shoemaker about Eugene Shoemaker.
Trying do do "classical/opera" vocals can fuck up your voice aswell when you do it wrong. Same with growling. It's both a matter of training. You have to stop asap when it begins to hurt and then give your chords a rest. Also, there are numerous different methods how to achieve "growling". Floor is doing pure false chord growls, meaning she isn't using her vocal chords at all. Another method for example is the "fry scream", which uses the vocal chords with a very "compressed" airflow and puts the false chord distortion on top.
