@halycon404
@halycon404 Год назад
This is part of a larger problem I have with absolutely everything being Cloud now days. Even things that make sense to be local. Along with my... um... general aversion to Apps. Most things that are App specific are just a client pulling from a web database and arranging it in a pleasing form. It takes a lot less effort to build a webpage and maintain it that than an App, so why App only? Well, it's because I'm the product, even if I'm paying them a fee. Security sharing isn't specific enough for most people to turn everything off that that App doesn't need so they're collecting data off me from the App. Which infuriates me. Sorry. Rant. I'm just tired of this new Web. :(

the other thing about non-compete clauses is that depending on where you are in the world they can be un-enforceable, my understanding (as a developer, not a lawyer) is that here in Australia it is very easy to accidentally write an un-enforceable non-compete clause for example "Employers may not impose unreasonable limits that unreasonably limit an employee’s ability to earn a living". Its always worth double checking the wording of your employment contracts with a professional, often companies will put some really scary sounding things in them, without any ability to back it up, but that depends heavily on region
@helplmchoking
@helplmchoking Год назад
Yep, same here in NZ. There can be non-compete clauses but they can't be much more than "can't work with the same clients at a direct competitor within 12 months" - like if I'm in sales and I move to a competitor I can't immediately call up my old clients and get them to move. I've had one dismissed before, it was basically "can't work in any company related to this industry in any way, in any role, within this region for 12 months" which was obviously never gonna work. And, obviously, even the enforceable ones are garbage since a colleague could freely contact my former clients themselves regardless of whether I gave them the contact info or not (which I did). as for software, it's even harder to enforce
@MrShitthead
@MrShitthead Год назад
Even in the US there's certain states where non-compete clauses are unenforceable like California, but most states do allow them. Thankfully, the FTC is proposing a TOTAL ban on them since non-compete clauses are completely immoral and unfair to the employee. What Musk did is a perfect example of why they're so insanely stupid, he fired a big chunk of his employees with no notice, made fun of them on twitter for being fired while sarcastically daring other companies to hire them, and then when they found jobs he tried to coerce their new employers into firing them because "non-compete clause bro"... If the FTC actually has balls and pushes these new changes we can obviously expect to see tweets from trust fund baby Musk crying about how "vital" non-competes are to the industry, and especially his need to be a cunt to everyone that isn't licking his ball sack.

@xerzy
@xerzy Год назад
To be fair, the hardest part of creating a social media platform wouldn't be CORS or hashing with salts. It would be scaling. If you want to make it centralized with millions of users and an ad-based business model, you're ABSOLUTELY gonna have to implement (and pay for) stuff like cloud servers, object storage (like Ceph, Ozone or S3), background jobs (like Sidekiq or JobRunr), Elasticsearch, "big data" distributed databases (like Hadoop/Hive or BigQuery), distributed event databases (like Kafka) (yes, people use multiple databases), distributed cache databases (like Redis or Memcached) (yes), monitoring (like Prometheus or Grafana)... all of the boring stuff. Twitter staff have written about this, most recently on "Processing billions of events in real time at Twitter", and previously on "The Infrastructure Behind Twitter: Scale", among other posts on their blog.
@helplmchoking
@helplmchoking Год назад
As has been said, optimising your searching, distributing databases and all the scaling stuff is hard work but it's not like Meta doesn't know how to handle all that - and they do it with a lot more data than Twitter ever has. The actual Twitter platform is as basic as any other social media platform, you just need money and engineers to make it bigger
@IzzyIkigai
@IzzyIkigai Год назад
@@xerzy I mean, it deffo got a lot easier and when you got billions to throw at the problem and you already have your own DCs/infrastructure that contain technology required for a message feed that scales to billions of users(Facebook, Whatsapp), your own CDN for image and video that actually works(instagram, Facebook), business tools for advertisers, core code infrastructure for login, etc. ... Also I'm missing Cockroach in your list. IMHO probably one of the coolest scale-out DB tech of the past few years.

You can say that for any website. Any website is easy to make. However, having that website be available to millions of people concurrently is the hard part. That doesn’t mean that making a power grid is this easy task because your hand crank generator was easy to build.

The line between corporate and government censorship is a line of legality, but if you're talking about the morality of censorship it's significantly more complex than "well it's a private platform they can do what they want". Legally that's the case, and obviously there are some kinds of censorship that are deserved, there are types of speech that are outright illegal, like threats of bodily harm, but setting things like that aside for the moment censoring something that just isn't friendly to capital isn't all that different than government censorship. In both settings you're saying something that a powerful entity with massive resources that has power over your life doesn't like, and if you think that's hyperbolic look at how much money US corporations donate to politicians, and how likely policies you push for are to be enacted based on financial status. If there isn't a strong divide between capital and the capitol then we can't act like corporate censorship is good actually, especially when you guys acknowledge that "just build your own platform then 5head" isn't really a viable option because of the infrastructure cost, and need for money to flow in, it's a problem.

There is no line between advertiser friendly and censorship, because making something advertiser friendly is wholly within censorship. Likewise, trying to have a rule about not allowing politics doesn't work because every aspect of anyone's life has to do with politics. You can minimize it, you can't eliminate it.

@ArchusKanzaki

Decentralized kinda sucks. Mastodon is the foremost for westerners but Japanese (tons of heavy Twitter users) actually went for Misskey instead, probably because its japanese and what appeared first when you searched on Google, and you cannot find and follow each other that way. Nobody really wants a social media where you cannot find everyone you followed, let alone a social media that is still limiting sign-ups. That is why all the talks about "Twitter killer" is really more of where people are migrating to next. Also, Thread promised that it will be compatible with all these decentralized social media, so if you want something that will be decentralized (in the future), that is backed by actual global servers right now, Thread is shaping-up to be the biggest Twitter competitors.

What's the difference between advertiser friendly and censorship? In terms of actions or policy, there is a distinction without a difference. In a capital friendly system, especially upon a privately owned and operated digital chatroom, anything that opposes the status quo for those who've already succeeded at accruing capital and their efforts to maintain that privileged position, will be censored or otherwise challenged by said entit(ies)y. Thusly, for most, its a difference of whose worldview is protected, irrelevant of "the truth" and what it may imply, and how many suffer/benefit from that. The real blackpill of this all is, simply, we'll willingly go along with it, and will even defend it when its challenged. The first Matrix film was so spot on with its observations of the ordinary person within the systems they exist within.

13:00 That's the same way I feel about Google's war against ad-blockers. If they manage to clamp down and prevent people from watching more than 3 videos (per day? forever? 🤔), then I'll just stop watching YT altogether and have 10-20 hours of extra free time per day. 🤷 (I multi-task while watching videos, but still, not having 200-300 videos in my watch-later list all day long would make life easier and freer, like before I started watching YT 5 years ago 😒). Bring it on. 👍 24:24 Okay Luke. 👍 You hair looks nice today. Ha! There, this wasn't garbage. Suck it Linus! - Um… wait a second… 🤔

Personal opinion, but Facebook peaked around 2006. Its best use was as an easy hub to communicate with friends I don't see day to day. The features I want are a messenger hub (it's slightly more convenient and less formal than email), a relatively feature-rich photo album (Instagram has too many limitations, and true photo sites like Flickr are slightly too niche), and comments and likes. I didn't mind the Wall when it was just public notes to people, but I want to control what types of content can be posted to my wall, don't post articles to my wall.

@@battmarn It started getting big in 2005. But at the time it was limited to colleges and was little more than "here's all your friends, poke them and write on their wall." 2007 they let external developers add tons of apps, which everyone then added to their pages and it started tanking for me. 2009 was probably around when they opened it up to anyone and everyone.

On the topic of content moderation, Threads is working on Federating, which in short basically acts as a decentralized way of communicating with people between social media services. It's mainly used by Mastodon right now, but when they eventually integrate it into Threads and open it to federation with other Mastodon and other social media servers, how are they going to handle innapropriate content from other servers that aren't their own?
