I was gonna make my own comic but I'm worried people will think I'm trying to be woke because the main characters are people of different ethnicities. I'm Jamaican I don't know anything other than my own culture and what I see of the rest of the world using the internet. My views are limited so I work with what I can mold with the easiest. But the story isn't about race, at its core it's about why people "think is a hero". I mean, growing up I always saw the wide contrast between Hero's like batman and superman and thought "why are these two Hero's? " Powers? No, batman has no powers. Revenge? No, batman and superman refuse to kill. Fame? No. Batman stays in the shadows and superman hates being looked on as a idol. It's why he tries to act human. So I why are they Hero's I asked myself. Because, they CHOOSE to do good. That's it. That's all it takes. Being a Hero is the choosing to do good. Not preaching or virtue signaling, just getting up and do the thing you wished other were kind enough to do. That's my story. A girl who tries to find the meaning of being a Hero as she is slowing learning the ropes from a the "retired" hero ,Iconic. The thing is In my world there is no powers, just people with guts, adrenaline, will power and blood. Lots and LOTS of blood. She's actually very cowardly on the inside but holds up the front of courage to motivate the people who expect her to be brave for them. She's actually somewhat inspired by cartoon and anime characters like courage the cowardly dog and eventually vash the stampede . She's not naturally bold, but can be brave when she see's something she finds precious is in danger and will go above and beyond what her body can manage to pull them out of harms way, that's her Courage the dog side. She has a hard time understanding why people just can't help each other instead of kill as a first response and she views the lives of all people even her enemies as on the same level of value as hers so she'd actually go out of her way to save the bad guys life if she could prevent another senseless death. That's her Vash side. She's basically a shonen protagonist in comic form
The Big G yo make your comic, if your not trying to be woke or push an agenda then it won’t come off that way. We need more people trying to tell good stories - doesn’t matter the race of the creator or characters - just tell the story you think people will read. And if people get on you for the race of the characters tell them to read something else because this is what you wanna writing about
Write it. I doubt anyone is going to complain about whatever ethnicity the characters are so long as the story is first and foremost focus of the comic book. So long as its written well, the character are either likable, relate-able or fun to read about and whatever world your in makes sense; people aren't going to think you're woke. They'll just be thinking about your story and that's the goal. Godspeed.
That's doesn't sound woke at all and I think most who would actually read it would learn it's not about race at all, just the characters merits, strengths, and weaknesses and how they work through them. Only those who haven't read it would think it's woke.
I would definitely read a comic like that because it sounds like a good story that I would enjoy reading so I say go ahead and make that comic the way you want to and so long as you do your best to make a good story you'll do great
He has been saying that for years now and it hasn't changed a thing. Who is he speaking to? His own echo chamber? Ever heard of a "purity spiral"? The best metaphor I've heard for why gatekeeping is good is this: Imagine that you own a restaurant. Not a famous one. Just your own little restaurant. Now, as the store owner, you can let anyone you want in, and you can keep anyone you want out. Of course, you let everyone in. Why wouldn't you? A dollar is a dollar after all. No fuss no muss. Eventually, you're going to get a collection of people who like to eat your particular style of food regularly coming in. Why those people? Who knows. But you're doing alright, so it's no big deal. But then, somebody else comes in. This person usually goes to other stores, but they're here now for some reason. Also, this person doesn't act like anyone else does. This person is annoying. They complain constantly. So what? You've got a stiff upper lip. But then... they get aggressive. They start insulting the other customers. They start shouting at you and the kitchen staff. They start threatening you with bad press and their nebulous friends. They demand that you change your menu, and that you hire them and their friends. Their reason? In so many words, "You're evil, everyone who eats here is evil, you're all hurting the entire world, and if you don't hire us and change your menu we will punish you for it." What would any reasonable restaurant owner do? They'd throw them out of the store, and then ban them from ever coming in. That person, and all of the people like them, are not welcome in your restaurant anymore, because they want to ruin everything and are generally disagreeable with the population at large. The customers will thank you for it, and everything will work better without the ousted people there. This is... pretty much how it goes with businesses, communities, hobbies, and any general way to categorize a group of people. It is not the act of gatekeeping that is evil. To paraphrase the quote manufacturing machine Thomas Sowell, "Ideas are neither good nor evil. Intentions are evil." Not gatekeeping is not morally superior to gatekeeping, and frankly it isn't functionally superior, either. The real difference is where and how gatekeeping is used, to what end it is used for. An SJW gatekeeps to fundamentally change a community and what they're organized around to become about their incredibly warped worldview. A regular person gatekeeps to retain a community, to preserve what they're organized around, and to keep it accessible to everyone who _doesn't want to destroy it._ If you claim that you have a set of values, but do nothing to protect them, then you don't really have those values. Being inclusive is not a virtue. It piggybacks off of the real virtues that our forefathers held. The reality is that you should never suspend your ability to discern jerkwads from normal people, because "inclusivity."
It's like conflict, the act isn't good or evil either. If you or something you love is being attacked then fighting back is the proper thing to do. If you can't be bothered to do your part to enforce peace then you have no right to complain when things go to shit, nor do you get to pat yourself on the back while others do the work of preserving order.
I tried discussing this with a friend who will not look at any news regarding this stuff and has decided it isn't really a problem because other people she knows dont talk about it, and that I am looking to be angry(which I am not, often times I am actually just laughing at how dumb some of the proposed SJW ideologies would play out. I.E. that article that claimed the implied sex between Steve Trevor and Diana was rape because she didn't verbally consent onscreen). So I tried to ask the question "if people fundamentally change the thing you enjoy, what do you do? Discuss it? Try to fight the change? or Abandon something you have cherished for years?" with the specific analog of toxic shippers managing to get jobs with creative control over her favorite series kingdom hearts. Her response was to claim that it could never happen and that my hypothetical might as well included them taking over the world. Your restaurant analogy is much, MUCH more concise. I think i may try to use it next time I find myself in a discussion.

Social media is stupid. Drama is even more stupid. I've said if before, but I'll say it again now, CG is just (or should be) a loose community gathered around a very simple ethos: 1. good comics that don't read like any kind of propaganda 2. respect; for the consumer who allows you to make a living creating comics, and when applicable, the properties and legacies of the creators who came before you No one has to even say they are CG. This little internal struggle is pointless. Both sides should just walk away and focus on making comics. The consumers will be the final arbiters anyways; this drama is ultimately just a distraction.
@Confusing Zark The problem is EVS HAS added "an iron rule" to his version of ComicsGate ... which created drama: ABSOLUTELY ZERO POLITICS in comics ... which is stupid because it blocks all "mutant registration act" storylines. This has been the reason for beef with Timothy Lim which was the first split in CG because Ethan is the one who is narrow-minded and transferred that mindset to their attitude on what CG is about. Ethan himself says "Richard defines what CG is about" ... but five seconds after Zack gives his definition Ethan gives his own one which is the narrow-minded version.
@Muck006: No, people asked Ethan what ComicsGate was to him and he gave his response. It was not "an iron rule" as you describe. You are acting just like Just Some Guy said; YOU are making Ethan's opinion your own "Iron Clad Rule". Ethan never ousted Tim Lim from ComicsGate or said that he wasn't ComicsGate. He did later admit that he can see in retrospect how his response made people like Tim feel and that he should have given more thought to his wording but of course what was said was said and Tim's weird "glove" operation makes mending fences difficult. Ethan was also talking about sustainability and mapping the future, and he's right about Trump comics. They are really only sustainable as long as Trump is in office. How long after can you realistically continue to write such comics and maintain a reader base? Trump comics are very dated. A movement away from the mainstream has to be based on more timeless stories.

its not about side. its about interaction. when you are engaging in your hobby, you want to engage with people who like the hobby in the same way you do. if someone comes into your space and wants to change the way your group is engaging with the hobby, it makes perfect sense that people will have a problem with these changes. if your friends like to talk Shonen manga and someone comes in trying to change the subject to Shoujo manga, it makes sense you would want that person to go away. they dont fit in your group.

for me comics, games and other media is escapism, i go there to get away from politics, religion and other things in the real world i need a break from. thanks for doing what you do to stand up for people like me who want to protect the things we hold dear to us.

I don't even know what's going on, other than folks splintering into factions. It's whatever. Nothing inherently wrong with that, when you consider some friendships have an expiration date. That goes especially for groups on the Internet. Something like this will always have splintering. The thing that gets on my nerves is that the conversation switched from unprofessionalism in mainstream comics to schism within CG. It's around every corner.
As much as I love EVS and his usual crew for the comics and banter they supply, they get caught up in this drama and bullshit a lot. You, Ya Boi Zach, and YoungRippa are the only three I've noticed with unique and genuine insight into the philosophy/motivations behind these type of obsessions without getting super caught up in it. Zach used to but since he got off Twitter his videos have been significantly more meaningful and interesting lately and though I don't always agree with him it's nice to hear his differing perspective on things. Keep it up man, you're doing great work.
you learn via fighting your own battles. sure, it'd be great having people fighting with you but you've got to learn. how to fight. when to retreat how to lick your wounds and learn lessons. doing that gains you expierence....and a thicker hide.

You are pretty much the only comic RU-vidr I haven't dropped since ComicsGate started specifically because you don't touch that nonsense. Neither for nor against. Side note: in interviews with both Mark Waid and Alex Ross, Waid had basically nothing to do with Kingdom Come. Ross hated Waid so much he refused to work with him on The Kingdom, and later got to do his own sequel in Thy Kingdom Come which was leagues better than Waids The Kingdom.
Let's say that gatekeeping is the answer. How would you do it? How do you prevent someone from having an opinion on something and expressing that opinion? Outrage culture? Cancel culture? Aren't we already there? Is it just an endless back and forth of that until nothing is left? If you figure out the "how" and think it can be sustainable and to the benefit of all, at that point the next question then is "should". Because should you do all those things to gatekeep... when does it end and who decides where the line is and what the qualifications are? Not to mention, once you start gatekeeping, it's incredibly easy to infiltrate. Especially with the anonymity of the internet. Paranoia becomes the default mindset of the gatekeeper and at that time, implosion occurs and no one can tell who is friend or foe. This is why gatekeeping always leads to a struggle for power and control. The only answer I can see working in the long run, without the need for gatekeeping, is the one that already exists. Shine a light on the products you enjoy, the creators doing good work or at least trying to, and the companies doing things the right way. Shine a light on how things are going wrong, sure, but if we constantly push people away from something and give them reasons to leave, we shouldn't be surprised when no one really wants to stay. Which of course, makes it easier for detractors to gain ground because there's no one there to oppose them with competing products or marketshare. There's a ton of great things happening right now. We should be striving to push towards an open and free market without gatekeepers. Gatekeeping, limiting choices, controlling trends, and crushing competition with predatory and monopolistic practices -- is how the comic industry got to the point it's currently at. The exodus of mass distribution to the average person, led to comics becoming an incredibly insular echo chamber. The smaller the market gets, the more people will fight fiercely to retain control of their piece of it. Encouraging competition and providing a choice, breaks down the gatekeeping practices that are crippling the comics industry. There will always be people creating, building, and rebuilding what others have destroyed. Supporting those people and those works by lifting them up, enables an alternative to thrive and compete. Customers benefit from it and creators and companies then have to innovate and compete at the highest level to earn the customer's time and money. Here's how you do this: if you have a club or group, and someone starts making everything about them and their politics, you ask them to stop. If they keep doing it, you ask them to leave or stop inviting them to group. It's that simple. No one's stopping them from doing these things. They just can't do them with you. Now, when it comes to a business, that gets tricky because a) you can't and shouldn't fire people for their political views, b) these people already run many of the companies, and c) you don't want to exclude politics from creative fields. That said, I think the same rule from above still applies. If someone is constantly turning in stories about the same generic transwoman bashing people in the head, you can ask that person to write something different and if they won't, stop giving them projects. If outside of the project they're constantly going on about their politics, then, given how it affects the company or the workers, you can fire them or not offer a new contract. This is already something people do. The sjws do it to the extreme and for far less, so it is doable.

When I read the above, I immediately think: but do people really want to become what they hate and what they view as wrong? We already see a lot of that now, don't we? It might create a short term change, but there's no long-lasting effects because it's a knee jerk reaction that isn't really thought out. This kind of thing would also be very hard to control because fandom doesn't have a governing body with any authority to say: "you're not welcome". It might be who other people are... but is that who we want to be? Given the option, is that how we want things to be? Without rules that have enforceable consequences, you either get locked into an endless power struggle or everyone just takes their ball and goes home because they're tired of the fighting (which always takes a toll on product creation, sometimes ceasing it completely) and implosion occurs. If the government passed a law tomorrow that allowed for the imprisonment of people for their views on a story, character, creator, or company -- would that be okay? Would that be something to advocate for as long as our "enemies" were the ones being incarcerated? That's a nightmarish dystopia that I don't think anyone truly wants. It's a step in the wrong direction. But that's the way this kind of thing goes. You can't truly stop someone from having an opinion, finding a way to express that opinion, or creating something/destroying something without the authority to imprison. Even when the comics code authority existed, you had an underground and indie movement that made comics without the approval of the CCA. A store can tell an unruly customer to leave, a business can fire someone on grounds of poor performance, negligence, misrepresentation, fraud, etc.. But fandom can't really do anything other than be outraged, express displeasure, boycott, buycott, etc.. If a business wants to stay in business, they'll evaluate what's working and course correct. Sometimes businesses don't do that, sometimes they do, sometimes the course correction comes too late, sometimes nothing should be course corrected because a small but loud subset is being listened to and the business is fooled into thinking a small sample size represents the silent majority. This is all part of a free market society though. People are free to run their businesses into the ground, destroy legacies of those that came before, and use their reach for propaganda. Does that mean any of that is right? Does it mean that that's the best way to run a business? No... but that's how this stuff goes. The best way to fight it is to understand that all you can control is your own spending habits, what you support and don't support, what you create and don't create. What you state in your reply and in your videos, shows that you understand that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We're at a tipping point right now... whether any of us realize it or not... and what we build or destroy right now, is going to have long-lasting ramifications for generations to come. Let's lead by example, not by force.

This reminds me of those scenes in the movies where you have the ppl saying, "Don't do it, whatever you do, don't EVER open this door!" or "Make sure to keep at least one guard here at ALL times, understand?", and in the very next scene, you see that one MFer walking towards the door and turning the knob; or you see the checkpoint unmanned and the enemy gets through. It's interesting that bcuz of my political ideology I only see ppl as individuals and tend to steer clear of "communities". I agree that CG should just signify ppl that agree on certain principles in relation to comics. There doesn't need to be a leader, a team of generals, any type of hierarchy whatsoever. All opinions should bear the same weight, at least that's how I see it.

Yeah, just don't respond. Sometimes (or maybe on the internet most of the time) it is just people trying to get a rise out of you. I've had a couple a friends like that with one specifically admitting it. They probably believe it gives them some kind of control or power to manipulate or make you feel a certain way, which gives them their amusement.
This is why I like you JSG- you are a true individual who sticks to his guns. If you think something is right, you stand by it. If you're proven wrong, you admit it. If "your side" is wrong, you don't sugarcoat it. If you're pushed, you push back without worrying about how other people percieve it. Every fandom needs more people like you.
I get that on the surface, JSG’s statements about gatekeeping sound harsh, but consider this angle: If you were a motorcycle fan, let’s say a Harley man (or woman) and you talked about how much you _loved_ Harleys. You just say all the right things, know about the specs, and all that stuff. And so Harley Davidson notices you and says “you, there! Tell us what you want to see us do with Harley!” And you immediately start spinning a yarn about how Harley’s are too loud, too masculine, too environmentally harmful... basically painting a picture of how much you *HATE* Harley Davidson motorcycles and think “they should be better,” you aren’t a fan, and you don’t care about Harley Davidson. You just want it to be something else, something that isn’t a Harley, but still has the name. Fans will criticize things they like. That will happen. But it’s often in a complimentary fashion. People didn’t like Man of Steel because Superman didn’t act like Superman, not because “Superman is a symbol of Trump’s America” or something stupid like that. A person who claims to be a fan of comic books but can only ever talk about how “problematic” they are because of race, gender, body type, or sexuality doesn’t give a shit about comics. They only care about how they can use comics to serve their own purposes. And I don’t know about you, but I do not want someone who hates what I like in my fandom, messing with my stuff.

11:11 Before he retired, when George Perez went on a tantrum after the Presidential election and vowed never to appear at another comic book convention in a red state (despite making his home in Florida), I sure as hell didn't sell/trade/throw away all of the old New Teen Titans, Fantastic Four and Avengers comics I grew up with and cherish. For the same reason you stand by Kingdom Come, I can separate the political views of the creator from the good work he or she has done.
I'd still have him do artwork on a book of mine, especially a team oriented one. As long as he's not being obnoxious to my face, I don't care what he thinks
Same here I am tired of this insane drama. I am ironically reading a manga called Beastars that is a drama, but am fed up with this real life industry drama due to insane people.
@Just Some Guy , I like your integrity, I like what you do. I've disagreed with your opinions at times or some of the particulars... but I agree with you mostly. Especially on this Twitter drama stuff. Congrats on the backbone of steel + 10. I learned when I was a teenager on message boards what a Flame war was. I'm not getting into that shit on Social media. Also, much kudos on rising above circumstances, that's what being an everyday hero is.
Labelling a leader or leaders in the first place is where they all went wrong. It was supposed to be a movement by the people for the people. Prominent figures in a movement is one thing but when someone puts on a crown or has a crown put on them, the movement is going to go sideways. It goes from a movement for something to a movement for someone. Infighting ensues, lines are drawn, and everything starts slowly becoming more and more toxic. The current trends show that rule, when it comes to internet movements, is without exception. Name one that hasn't gone wrong after a year or two. People that want power see a shot at getting some and seek out movements to try and claim a seat. They don't care what the movement is they just want to be in charge of something. It's just what happens. Pull the ripcord and move on to the next thing to avoid getting the toxic salt on your shoes. Comicsgate is starting to have way too much butthurt, personified ego, self righteousness, and bitterness. They don't want to open the door for SJWs to be altruistic because "comics are for everyone". I'm not buying that. They want someone they think they can kick around and flex on. SJW is not a race of people that can be discriminated against or something. It's an ideology that is literally the polar opposite of comicsgate. They should not be "let in" because they really don't want to be apart of it. They want to destroy it if possible. No one can hold those conflicting ideologies. It's just not how it works.
lol Doug Ernst put out a video right after EVS's first "I'm leaving ComicsGate announcement" where he says "hey, look at me, I'm really qualified, I can be your leader!"

I've found a very easy way to gatekeep is by simply telling them "No." maybe I've been lucky, but from personal experience and what I've seen in the news (Joker, Atelier Ryza) the worst that has happened is they will throw a fit before seeing themselves out.

Reminds me a lot of drama in high school. Dragging people into petty fights and arguements that have nothing to do with them. Forcing people to pick sides. All of its completely stupid abd childish but then again... It's Twitter, what do you expect.
Its amazing to know some people cannot accept someone else has a different opinion from them thus giving a review off their bias. Of course people will have a different opinion! For better or for worse that is what makes the world move. Without that, reality would be stagnant. Mankind would never change nor evolve. To disagree with someone is normal. To be angry that someone you respected has a different opinion is the equivalent of a child throwing a tantrum in Wal-mart because their parents refused to buy him/her some candy.

Thank God someone said it. Both sides need to just drop it. Especially the ones who claim victoomhood. They perpetuate their own trolling attacks by continuing to answer and comment on the trolls activity. Just ignore them don't feed the trolls or you will become the troll and no longer a victim.
