I have been asked about my hand and foot combination concept many times so I decided to use this opportunity to share the exercise I have used to develop my fluidity. I'm also beginning a new video series called the Twitter Series. Any questions? I'll be answering one or two per month or as my schedule permits. This video was filmed using my camcorder and my laptop. My goal was to make it as if the viewer and I are conversing over a cup of coffee. It's not scripted, and the audio is not recorded using fancy mics or digital audio. Just my camcorder. The whole series will be done this way.

As a local drummer and percussion teacher in the philadelphia schools for 18 years, I've listened to and studied countless drummers. I have told my students that drumming has become so specialized that its much more difficult to play all styles equally well. I can honestly say that I have never been so inspired both as a player and as an educator since hearing Steve play. Everything is so precise, yet has so much feel. Technique is flawless, musicality is poetic, versatility is beyond comprehension, and ideas are endless. Absolutely phenomenal drumming!

Everyone plays hand and foot combos, it's the purpose of the kit. The way you describe it here though, is a breakthrough! It's helped me so much. No licks, no chaffee. Just my own improvisations. Thanks Steve!

Cool demo, yes it's easy to lose it and takes a long time for it not to feel tentative, u run into combinations by accident that tests your independence.

I still haven't mastered this but one nice little result from practicing this was when I was on a jazz gig with a two piece set and the leader decided to give me a lot of solos that night. It was a quite restaurant gig so had to be soft too. I find practicing this I'll call notey exercise, made me think in a lot longer phrases and be patient and build slowly and take my time. I don't know, it wasn't like I played anything I had practiced in a sense but the shit just came out and flowed that one night and this exercise was the reason. Thanks Steve.

Kind words are deserved...you're quite welcome! It turns out you went to high school with my friend and peer, Howie Thompson. He sends kind words as well!

all i see is the 10 000 hours thing...then another 10 000 hours... the hand foot thing is crazy hard to do well...all i think of is the BR II video w/Vinnie blazing in madness. Hass madness here! Steve...so much wisdom in a young cat. I always think of the core foundations to all these exercises and it is the flow and relaxed technique developed over all those practice hours. More vids please. Also, one of the nicest dudes you will ever meet!

Great video Steve, I've been doing the 1 st one you showed for a few days and enjoying it. I was curious if you did it in the video heel down or heel up particularly when you get faster? I'm trying to do stuff heel down and after having some veins taken out of my leg for a heart surgery, I'm not sure if I've lost some strength. It's hard to tell because I played heel up for so long prior to switching. Thanks again!

Thanks! This is all heel up, although I do recommend doing it both ways for strength and control.

Hey. I attempted to transcribe what's going on to practice slowly. Does anyone have a link or something to send exactly what this is?
@HassbeatDrumChannel
@HassbeatDrumChannel 3 года назад
Don't transcribe. That defeats the purpose. It's just 16th triplets and and 32nd notes divided between the hands and feet. All groupings of 2's and 3's.
