Sometimes when I am in the mood I turn on this channel during the night and watch these raw videos. To me, even though I am seeing buildings long past their glory days, it relaxes me.
From what I found online, the Road Runner Motel was raided by police a couple of years ago and something like half a mil in marijuana plants was seized.
Nevada has over 600 ghost towns. Most are abandoned from mines not striking it rich and the rest are failed 'desert playground' attempts. The military bases nearby Tonopah are the only thing keeping that town from extinction.
The second motel was probably abandoned within the last few years. You could hear the low battery warnings on the smoke detectors, and those are pretty recent detectors
As one who spent time in motels, back in the '60s when they were a welcome place to spend a night during a trip, these two took me back---minus the vandalism and dirt, of course. My folks and I visited Yellowstone late in June of '67 and found the mountain roads with a foot or more of snow alongside the roads going in. Old Faithful blasted half-heartedly, late, and sleet was pelting down as we ran for the van. On the way out, we experienced all forms of precipitation, and were lucky to find a spacious motel room on the outskirts of Bozeman, MT. Slept like a baby with rain pouring down all night, so I remember it fondly. Free coffee and hot chocolate in the morning, too!
What a contrast between two deserted motels: the first one had a tranquil quality to it, I found it to be a peaceful setting while the second motel has a very different and bad feeling to it. I know it's dated but I imagine there are people who would like some of the furniture from the first place, maybe even because it's so dated! The furniture from the second place: who knows what's been done on or around it; best to leave that alone.
lol I have stayed in that motel. I used to do some desert racing & stopping there makes for a nice, easy 1/2 day drive to Reno. We also felt safer having a race car on the trailer in a small town. lol I love old motels like that. They are cheap, no frills, kinda nostalgic & you can park right outside you door. That was a long time ago. I feel old now.
I swear. An entire episode from Breaking Bad could have been filmed in and around there. I keep looking for someone to walk out of one of those rooms wearing red PJs with an ice bucket.
I think crackheads usually live close to civilization in order to panhandle, steal, and buy crack. That Roadrunner Motel seemed way out there; was it close enough to some town to make it attractive to crackheads?
"TONE-ah-pah" and the first a in Nevada is like apple ;) All of us yell at the TV when someone says Nevada wrong on the news ;) Tonapah has some amazing abandoned mines and structures, as does nearby Goldfield (home of the infamous Goldfield Hotel)...although...Tonapah has the Clown Motel.
The decor in the Sundowner was "classic" 70's - orange was a popular color during that decade. I'm surprised the place was still so intact. Love your dead motel vids, Dan.
The sun has definitely set on this motel. Orange carpet goes back to the late seventies. I am surprised that the rooms were as intact as they were and that no one ravaged them.
One of these days you're going to be filming your murderer coming at you. Be careful. Just a BTW Dan, I'd never ever ever wish anything bad happen to either you or Will. What you're doing is absolutely fascinating..I'm glued to all of your films. I can just picture thru your POV and imagine weird things lol! Much love and respect from Michigan.
Don't be surprised, if so. Upon arriving in Montana (lived there for a year), I was greeted with a "Say no to Meth!" billboard, and that is a big issue out west, from SD to MT, it's ridden with that and heroin.
So cool. There's another abandoned motel off I-84 east in Farewell Bend, Oregon. Rooms are furnished. It's like they just jumped ship and left everything. Windows are all boarded up though
The Roadrunner didn't close until late 2014. It was a druggie place long before it closed, and several shootings and knifings took place in the 10 years before it closed. Looks like the same people are now living in it for free. This is not a place I would have picked to hang around and explore.
The owner of that road runner hotel is actually in jail for drugs the place got raided back in 2014 btw Dan please do me a favour and clean you're BMW haha I would literally die if my 1 series was like that haha!!
i could not only carry your little car with my truck but drive over it. Guess you know what I think of your little toy. Doubting anyone with a beemer knows anything about mechanics, but sure they know a lot about highly inflated costs at the dealership. daf , and you probably don't even own one.
mountaintruth1 - So what? You know what they say about guys that drive big trucks. . . that they're overcompensating for what they lack in "other areas". So, I wouldn't be so proud if I were you because everyone knows "big truck = tiny dick."
What a fun time you must have going to such fascinating abandoned places. Museums.. I can't watch the dirty room? series. The first one i watched, i couldn't get past the crap on the bathroom floor. Lol Thanks for sharing your passion ...
Great video, every time you opened a door I was expected a dead body. Have you ever came across someone living in these motels? Its a shame the government don't do them up as hostels for homeless or low income people.
Where do the stairs go? I wished you done a more detailed video of these places, the second spot looked like it was a very nice place at one time long long ago. pronounced tone-a-paw.
I'll be darned if I don't think that's the motel my mother, aunt and I stayed in in 1971 on our way from Waco, Texas to Los Angeles. We had been in Las Vegas earlier in the day, then visited Death Valley Scotty's Castle and came on into Tonapah. We were upstairs with my room on the right end as you're looking at the motel and Mother and Aunt Mary's next to mine. That AC unit in the back wall was the noisiest thing when the compressor kicked on you ever heard--I think you could have heard it all the way to Waco.
The Dead Motels series now begins......by goin' on Route 66;it looked like it had seen better days. I wonder what it had looked like since it first opened?
Click the "like" before any of Dan's vids even start so that I won't forget to do it. Always know it'll be good stuff ; ) Thanks for taking your journey out West guys, and sharing your adventure with us. According to Twitter it looks like you guys are back to the East coast. I'll bet the furbabies were happy to have their Dad (Dan) back home. I'm still planning to order a print off Etsy, and support such journeys. With Will's love for vintage horror, and Dan's keen eye/appreciation for vintage architecture, fake plants, and weird things from eras gone by, you guys are hands down, the most interesting, worth while 'tubers in my book.
I stayed in several Motels in the 70s and 80s.I don`t think they had as bad a reputation back then. They were well maintained and always had Patrons.Brings back some good memories.I think the Rvs have helped kill the Motel business.Plus all the drugs and crime, which did not seem as bad back in the day.Love these kind of videos. Thanks for posting.
Should have checked out that wierd second floor office or whatever I assume was on top of the Road Runner Motel... So cool though. I would probably stay at an abandoned motel in the desert if nobody else was there, can't beat the price.
Always love the roadside motels.. extra points for the mom and pop diner in the same vicinity and or connected to the hotel. Brings back childhood memories of Mammoth Cave in the early 80s, staying just outside the Cave in Cave City, and in walking distance of Guntown Mountain, there was a Jerry's restaurant that had thee best "vacation" food possible. As always, thanks for these videos and drudging up the swept away kiddy memories of mine!
NOT SHOUTING, LAPTOP PROBLEMS.....I HAD TO CHUCKLE WHEN YOU SAID 'VINTAGE ITEMS' BECAUSE I THOUGHT, 'HEY THAT STUFF WAS COOL WHEN I WAS 10!! ALMOST VERGING ON GROOVY! MY GOODNESS, IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT I HAVE SUCH A JUVENILE BRAIN INSIDE MY AGING BODY. I ALWAYS THOUGHT WHEN PEOPLE GOT 'OLD' THAT THEY WOULD ACT ACCORDINGLY, BUT I THINK PEOPLE'S PERSONALITIES REMAIN INTACT. I'LL BE 55 THIS YEAR AND IT'S SOOOOO WEIRD! THAT IS IF I KEEP LIVING SINCE I'M CURRENTLY NOT SO WELL. MY SISTER IS A SCHOOL PRINICPAL AND SHE WAS INCREDULOUS THAT THE SCHOOL KIDS DIDN'T HAVE ANY CLUE HOW TO USE ONE OF THOSE PHONES DISPLAYED IN THE ROOM. I ACTUALLY HAVE A PHONE BOX WITH THE DIAL, THE EAR HORN AND WHERE YOU SPEAK INTO THE MOUTH PIECE AND IT WORKS! BELONGED TO MY GRANDPARENTS, BUT I'D LOVE TO SEE SOME YOUNGER PEOPLE FIGURE OUT THAT ONE. GREAT VIDEO AND SUBBED!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one from the 60s who still feels like a kid inside ! That was actually a nice room having a real vanity. The 79s we're the best days. If only we could go back in time ,eh?
2018 and doing a binge watch ..love your videos and some of these places are beyond creepy have me on edge of my seat. Some of these be a good horror movie set
Awesome vid! That second hotel(Road Runner)was raided a few years back as the owner was growing marijuana there. Not sure if that's why it ended up closing.
I wish you went upstairs to the second floor bet owners lived up there. Those tv's are definitely old from early 90's this explore is neat no rooms thrown around etc thanks for sharing ... New subscriber
